Can you prove it? Or did you want me to using engineering physics?

Anyway, this thread isn't about whether you want to have a head on or not. It's about Mobile Speed cameras in NSW. So I suggest we get back on topic. Although this has been fun :happy:

Thanks wht510 for the physics lesson :worship: I was sure that was the case, but your explanation was awesome.

Big brain FTW!

I wonder if some of the misconception is down to the difference in DeltaV; due to the lack of crumple zones in a wall, versus the perceived relative "softness" of a car?

It was the same when i was in Adelaide about 2 months ago.Every body was doing 10 k's under the limit everywhere.It was infuriating. I thought:These cops have really got these drivers shitting themselves.

^ ^ ^ must be similar to Rockhampton.

Coppers were setting up a radar unit quite close to the approaches to the main Bruce Hwy bridge.

The crassness and insensitivity of it all was, they were doing it as Rockhampton was about to be submerged - yes, the flood! :down:

This is the worst sort of driver IMHO. The person who thinks they know it all, thinks they have experience because they fanged someone elses car around motorkhana (not caring for the car because it's not yours?)

Then you say there's no room for these skills on the road....... "except in an emergency" - which would I would hazard a guess and say there is room for skills like these on the road.

Driver training/track work/motorkhanas etc. etc. etc. isn't going to save you when you aren't concentrating. You aren't invincible because you are driving below the speed.

There's no need to know how to drive on a car on the limit, or how to slide them around, IF you drive to the conditions, you should never be on the edge of "Sliding out". If you drive with enough observation, you will not end up in dangerous situations, such as having to brake heavily because of stupid people pulling out etc.

As to "fanging someone elses car". I went up to help out, as my car was off the road. A friend offered me the keys, and her car drives totally different to mine. As an experienced veteran of the road, I'm sure you'd agree that going from one car to another, even when it's the same model, with relatively the same mods, the cars drive differently... ;)

But still, we come to the fact, as Cassbo has said, if you overstep the line in the sand. It's YOUR FAULT. Deal with it.

If you've got such a huge problem with it, stop bitching on the internet, and get yourself into a career path that will make a difference in these rules... Or is it too easy for you to complain instead and you just CBF like the rest of the people who just want to have a whinge without doing anything productive?

sorry dude i just assume averyone on here is a it nerd ( mainly just to rub them up the wrong way)

each vehicle only has a 80km/h of energy so total energy from the crash from both cars= about half of teh same car doing 160km/h

crash a car into a wall at 80km/h

crash two cars head on into each other both doing 80 km/h and the damage is almost the same

so it only = 80 km/h

Fatz is right:

energy is proportional to the square of the velocity at the speeds we're talking about.

double the velocity = 4x the energy to dissipate assuming same mass.

Let's give an 80km/h car an energy of 1 unit.

1 x 80km/h car hitting solid object = 1 unit of energy to dissipate in its crumple zone

2 x 80km/h cars hitting each other = 2 units of energy to dissipate in each car's crumple zone, say 1 each = similar to solid object impact for 1 80km/h car

1 x 160km/h car hitting solid object = 4 units of energy to dissipate in 1 car's crumple zone = a way bigger dissipation than 2 x 80km/h.

Back on topic:

As part of the motorcycle training all riders must do a video is shown of a station wagon hitting a solid concrete block head on at 80km/h.

If you were in that wagon (regardless of restraints or airbags) you would be dead. The car ends up being about 1/2-2/3 its original length.

If a 'safe' travelling speed = a speed at which a solid impact is survivable from inside the car, then that 'safe' speed is more like 45km/h...

Given that the figures actually show 'speed differential' (i.e. how different your speed is to those travelling around you) is the problem,

I would like to see "speed recommendation" rather than "speed limit" signs; then fining people according to how far off that "speed recommendation" they are.

e.g. if the recommended speed is 100, and you're doing 130 (or 70) you should be fined the same.

Cheers,

SW

Yes you are right.

Depends on whether you wish to say that the 'crumple zones' are negligable, which I was assuming. At those speeds, it's game over anyway the crumple zones are just a token. Most of the kinetic energy isn't absorbed by the crumple zone, but the occupants and the car itself. Eitherway, Kinetic energy and momentum are the right way of figuring this stuff out.

I'm spent (driving on the right side of the road over in the good ol' US of A. Where the limit is 55, but everyone does 70!)

Peace out. Jet lag is speaking.

On Topic: Honestly, I havent seen even one of these mobile cameras.

I've seen more parked police with radars but no big Ford Territory's as was romoured.

Off-Topic: Last week some crazy copper on Parramatta Road crossed two lanes with his head down in peak hour traffic holding a radar (which looked like a gun) and no stop sign. So he gave everyone (me) an impression he was just crossing the road. When he gets to the middle of my lane he decides to look up and stop two whole lanes. Mind you I was still doing 70kph and he was less than 50m away. I shit my pants. I thought he was busting me. I was in the inner lane. He let through two cars on the outer lane then busted a dude in a blue Mitsubishi in the outer lane. Phew!... But come on!! The cop could of caused a pile up and put himself in danger! He could of at least flagged everyone to slow down first!

So yeah. Havent seen any mobile cameras: knock on wood.

Have nothing but respect and admiration for most of the QPS and it's personel but the traffic branch are an absolute bunch of dogs and oxygen thieves.

They surely don't hide...

* behind trees do they?

* or silhouetted by sunsets?

* behind Century 21 F/S signs?

* between parked cars?

* under the veil of moonless nights?

* 20m past an apex?

Sounds like NSW & VIC!

Alas, I guess catching 'speedsters' fleeing from floods takes the cake!

Sounds like someone who knows my mate the HWP officer in the red (and now also a green) unmarked VE on the GWH, eh Terry?

Add illegally parked in Everton Road (Ugg Boot Man) blocking traffic from exiting an intersection.

My missus sat behind him the other day (he's parked AT the dotted line at the corner, and looks like he's about to pull out and drive down towards Springwood), eventually tooting at him, until he got out of his car and impatiently told her to drive around him.

She then asked him sweetly what the minimum parking distance from a corner was. She said he went red and started mumbling... :spank:

She said "speak up please" as he was muttering and walking away

Nearly wet myself when she told me...

CSB, cool story bro!

mines not as good but..

mate at work lives up near epping, forget the road but basically a cop was using his driveway to do radar checks as he lives just after a blind corner, soon as my work colleague realised what was going on he marched out and told them to take a hike. They tried to convince him they were just doing their job but he just told them to 'f**k off and do it somewhere else.'

gold.

Sorry, I'm marching in a bit late here... but 2 car head to head impacts don't need crumpled zones. It's simpler than that. You 2 cars, so twice the mass to soak up the impact.

Energy = half x mass x velocity squared.

P.s. mobile cameras are gay.

"Radar must not be used at any location or in a mode that would give rise to legitimate adverse criticism or a complaint that radar is a means of raising government revenue"…..

This is particularly true of legislated safety procedures the police are supposed to carry out whilst engaged in speed enforcement operations. Just as a sample did you know that when you are pulled over by a policeman using a Lidar/Laser gun, the following rules must be adhered to by that policeman. It states clearly and I quote; "At all times a fully marked Police vehicle is to be positioned on the roadway at the stopping location to provide early warning and a corridor of safety for motorists. The roof message bar and/or warning lights of the police vehicle must be utilised." When was the last time you saw that happen? They hide behind bushes and bustops, park their vehicles around the corner or up on the footpath behind those bustops creating havoc for pedestrians, use unmarked vehicles and deliberately operate from the reserves in between major freeways. They hide up elevated off ramps, in road works, in fact everywhere their own laws declare they are not allowed to operate in!

Driveways and side streets are NOT part of the "Stopping Location" criteria and therefore not legitimate.

If it was my driveway, I'd park the F##ker in and catch the train to work for a week.

go ask a legal person what a guideline is

lol

Exactly, and that's why they do it :thumbsup:

But it also means you might have a chance of getting off if they've taken the piss badly enough...

You're Mountains too, right?

Hmmm... still in the Blue Mtns Dale & fatz,

It's taking the RTA forever and a day to fix up the Old Bathurst Rd between E. Blaxland and Emu Hts.

The speed limit has been restricted to 40Km/hr.

So what does Mr Plod do?

He parks his red/green VE in Binya Ave near the top of the escarpment 15m from the speed-reduction sign, and lies in wait.

There isn't one intersection, driveway, house, outhouse, farmhouse or doghouse from where he sits to below the scraped section.

    • Hi, is the HKS  Tower Bar still available ? negotiable ? 🤔
    • From there, it is really just test and assemble. Plug the adapter cables from the unit into the back of the screen, then the other side to the car harness. Don't forget all the other plugs too! Run the cables behind the unit and screw it back into place (4 screws) and you should now have 3 cables to run from the top screen to the android unit. I ran them along the DS of the other AV units in the gap between their backets and the console, and used some corrugated tubing on the sharp edges of the bracket so the wires were safe. Plug the centre console and lower screen in temporarily and turn the car to ACC, the AV should fire up as normal. Hold the back button for 3 sec and Android should appear on the top screen. You need to set the input to Aux for audio (more on that later). I put the unit under the AC duct in the centre console, with the wifi antenna on top of the AC duct near the shifter, the bluetooth antenna on the AC duct under the centre console The GPS unit on top of the DS to AC duct; they all seem to work OK there are are out of the way. Neat cable routing is a pain. For the drive recorder I mounted it near the rear view mirror and run the cable in the headlining, across the a pillar and then down the inside of the a pillar seal to the DS lower dash. From there it goes across and to one USB input for the unit. The second USB input is attached to the ECUtec OBD dongle and the 3rd goes to the USB bulkhead connected I added in the centre console. This is how the centre console looks "tidied" up Note I didn't install the provided speaker, didn't use the 2.5mm IPod in line or the piggyback loom for the Ipod or change any DIP switches; they seem to only be required if you need to use the Ipod input rather than the AUX input. That's it, install done, I'll follow up with a separate post on how the unit works, but in summary it retains all factory functions and inputs (so I still use my phone to the car for calls), reverse still works like factory etc.
    • Place the new daughterboard in the case and mount it using the 3 small black rivets provided, and reconnect the 3 factory ribbon cables to the new board Then, use the 3 piggyback cables from the daughterboard into the factory board on top (there are stand offs in the case to keep them apart. and remember to reconnect the antenna and rear cover fan wires. 1 screw to hold the motherboard in place. Before closing the case, make a hole in the sticker covering a hole in the case and run the cable for the android unit into the plug there. The video forgot this step, so did I, so will you probably. Then redo the 4 screws on back, 2 each top and bottom, 3 each side and put the 2 brackets back on.....all ready to go and not that tricky really.
    • Onto the android unit. You need to remove the top screen because there is a daughterboard to put inside the case. Each side vent pops out from clips; start at the bottom and carefully remove upwards (use a trim remover tool to avoid breaking anything). Then the lower screen and controls come out, 4 screws, a couple of clips (including 3 flimsy ones at the top) and 3 plugs on the rear. Then the upper screen, 4 screws and a bunch of plugs and she is out. From there, remove the mounting brackets (2 screws each), 4 screws on the rear, 2 screws top and bottom and 3 screws holding in the small plates on each side. When you remove the back cover (tight fit), watch out for the power cable for the fan, I removed it so I could put the back aside. The mainboard is held in by 1 screw in the middle, 1 aerial at the top and 3 ribbon cables. If you've ever done any laptop stuff the ribbon cables are OK to work with, just pop up the retainer and they slide out. If you are not familiar just grab a 12 year old from an iphone factory, they will know how it works The case should now look like this:
    • Switching the console was tricky. First there were 6 screws to remove, and also the little adapter loom and its screws had to come out. Also don't forget to remove the 2 screws holding the central locking receiver. Then there are 4 clips on either side....these were very tight in this case and needed careful persuading with a long flat screw driver....some force required but not enough to break them...this was probably the fiddliest part of the whole job. In my case I needed both the wiring loom and the central locking receiver module to swap across to the new one. That was it for the console, so "assembly is the reverse of disassembly"
