Gaskets are fitted. Keeping the stock BOV, no need to be a wanker.

After taking out the airbox (gater racing panel filter), it seems I need to have it tuned to run without an AFM, meaning I have to take it to a turbo shop and have them fit my pod for me.

Which is more than likely going to cost a ridiculous amount of money :banana:

yeeah, having limited mechanical knowledge, I know that I DO have an AFM, and that there is physically not enough room to put a pod filter in place of the old airbox, requiring tuning to run without an AFM, or whatever the thing is with the gold-ish plate that goes into my airbox.

Only going on what i've been told.

In response to the afm bit - what? Step one: buy an adaptor for pod filter ($15 at superrepcoautocheapbarn). Step two: remove airbox and keep all your screws. Step three: attach adaptor to AFM. Step four: attach pod filter to adaptor, use good clamps, don't over tighten. Expected time to complete: 15 mins plus half an hour to go to your local superrepcoautocheapbarn™.

Not hard at all. No need to lose the AFM and truth be told your not going to gain anything from ditching it anyway. Plus you save money on tuning.

Now ignoring all the pointless bagging of the new skyline owner: just drive sensibly okay? I sold my first R33 turbo to a kid on his L's (his first car) and wrapped it around a power pole a week later - country road, sharpish corner, too much throttle, oversteer, over correction, crash. His mate in the car had a broken leg but otherwise no injuries - could easily have killed them both. In retrospect I shouldn't have sold it to him.

This is something that I'm sure a certain Mr.Eps pointed out a while back. As the purchase price of skylines drop we will be getting new breeds of people buying skylines - the young, the cheapskates, the inexperienced, the bogans, the boostcruisers (had to be said :D ) and various others. Its slowly but surely turning me off buying a skyline again.

I might just stay with the euros - something that has been historically bogan proof - just to avoid being tarnished by the bogan twat brush. Public perception of skyline owners is only set to get lower and lower...

It simply will not fit :D

For reference, after researching since rougly January/February I found this one in the Quokka for 6k and worked my way down.

And rest assured I know the power of this car, how easy it is to lose the tail end and the severity/consequences of motor vehicle accidents, hence why I'm not going to be your typical P-Plater trying to be hektik and drift every corner in their fUlLy $iCkKk SkYlInE.

i think you should take a picture of both the engine bay and the filter you are trying to fit. there are thousands of skylines out there with pod filters on them, so if you aren't able to fit one there there is someting weird going on. either the pod filter you are trying to fit is stupidly big, or you are just plain doing it wrong. the pod should take up about the same space as the airbox, or even a bit less.

Im thinking that i should just take the airbox out, and attach the pod filter. Which kind of makes me question my mechanic's judgement :rofl2:

Can i just unscrew the airbox, get rid of it, stick an adaptor onto the AFM and bolt the pod on? Makes sense to me

Okay the airbox comes off very easily. Unbolt it and put it somewhere safe for when you decide to sell the car.

Referring back to my previous post:

Step one: buy an adaptor for a pod filter ($15 at superrepcoautocheapbarn).

Step two: remove airbox from car - top and bottom sections. Keep all your screws.

Step three: attach adaptor to AFM loosely bolting down finger tight.

Step four: attach pod filter to adaptor, make sure you slipped the clamp on before hand. Use good clamps, don't over tighten if you dont want them broken.

Step five: check all bolts and screws are tightened.

Step six: fit a heat shield of some description.

Expected time to complete: 15 mins plus half an hour to go to your local superrepcoautocheapbarn™.

Alternative is to fit a high flow panel filter. Will do the same if not better job than an unshielded pod.

Well to attach the pod filter to the air flow meter there is an adapter, the pod filter slips over the adapter and then clamps down. Its tight fitting but you still need a band or t-clamp to make it fit tight.

So its afm -> adaptor -> clamp -> pod filter -> heat shield

The band clamp goes around the base of the pod filter which is attached to the adapter.

Its pretty easy, and its probably the most simple thing you can do.

On the heat shield front, particularly in Australia, if your car isn't moving the air it will be sucking in is engine bay ambient temperature which is hot. Not good on a number of fronts.

There are already some good tutorials on here for making heat shields, its easy and cheap. I'll dig up the link for you, but in the future search for this info - most people on here are pretty decent but you can't be spoon fed all the answers all the time. Do the research and ask considered questions and its better for everyone.

Just tried installing the pod, got all parts etc. ready and woe be me, cant get the f**king AFM bolts undone. The airbox itself twists trying to undo them, and has begun to strip on one corner.

Not risking stripping the nuts. Wtf can i do? :(

The 'gasket' is referring to replacing/repairing the rocker roller cover, which is leaking a few drips of oil. Had a qualified mechanic mate come out with me to have a look at it, just using his terms.

The only other problem would be the rear suspension bushings, which id consider fairly worn. Before I get my license i'll get them replaced.

Also done 172xxxkms, hence reasoning for the price. Besides that mechanically A1 ;)

Just picked up a K&N pod filter (from someone on here), which is going in tomorrow.

Theres also a large fmic (from a vl turbo kit) going on in a few weeks. Mate said it should suit fine, anyone with experience care to enlighten?

Dont worry, you wont see this wrapped around a pole on 7 News anytime soon(;

as for the clamp...

the afm BOLTS on to the adaptor... then from the adaptor. you slide on the podfilter. but you need a clamp to "clamp on" the podfilter to the afm.. its the big silver ring with cuts in it that has a screw head at one end...

just because your mate is a mechanic.. dosent mean he knows what he is talking about when it comes to these things.

for a "qualified mechanic" to tell you to get a workshop to install your pod without the afm... is silly. unless your running and aftermarket ecu... even a 1st year apprentice wouldnt say that shit

installing a podfilter is the first d.i.y everyone pretty much has done.

dont be a fool that gets a workshop to install a podfilter. i know you have no idea like you said, but you made a good choice on jumping on the forums.

the last thing i want to say is, take your car to a trackday or a skidpan day... im pretty sure you dont need to be over 18 to do so. and its definatley iny our best interest to be able to go somewhere, go nuts with your car and loose control of it... in a controlled environment. rather than on the street

also another thing that pissed me off. is "the vl cooler that should fit in"

i would tell you to go to justjap.com and get yourself a RETURN FLOW intercooler...

but look on the forums first see of someone is sellingone..

if your cars a virgin. get a turnflow cooler. unlike normal intercooler kits, you dont need to drill any holes and its legal. going by how difficult it was for your mate to point you in the right direction of how to install a podfilter. id hate to see what he would do with a holesaw and your car...

Little harsh up top there. All been in good faith mate.

I'm becoming a little skeptical of my mates mechanical ability. I have put my trust in someone that has completed their apprenticeship + TAFE to know what they're on about, but having realised that I can install the pod filter myself.. im a bit suss of him.

The forums have been great, and a good way to source advice, parts & knowledge :D

Anyway, not important. What I'm looking for is a way to unbolt the AFM, seeing as the bottom bolts are impossible to reach :D

Already got my clamps, pod cleaned/oiled up & adaptor all ready to go, just got to get the bloody thing off

    • The average previous owner for these cars were basically S-chassis owners in the US. Teenagers or teenager-adjacent. I often tell people that neglect is easier to fix than something that was actively "repaired" by previous owners.
    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
