Great thread to start a "DID YOU KNOW THAT .........?" theme!

I'll add this...

DID YOU THAT there was a driver with Special Vehicles Racing > Holden Racing Team, who in 1991 swore black and blue that these R32 GT-Rs should not have any part of Grp A (- that they should be off the road)? ...and yet a year later, he was driving an R32 GT-R at Bathurst?

Q. Who was he? :P

Originally was supposed to be a 2.4, which at the time was a stroked version of the 2.0L Nissan engine, to compete in the 4000cc class in Grp A (2.4x1.7 = 4000cc) but then due to the weight of the car they decided to bump up the power and compete in a higher class (4500cc) in Grp A. All that = RB26DETT :P

DID YOU KNOW THAT (i know you all do...) the power of the engine isn't actually 206kW but rather close to around 230kW

you might be right, i had two sources saying 206kw so i put that in

did you know that...internet isn't always a reliable source? hmph my apologies if some specs are a bit off

You are both right. Just remember why nissan claimed 206kw when in fact it was no where near the real output. The gentlemens agreement.

Does anyone know how many factory airbag cars were manufactured ??....

Mine is a factory airbag car ...and im told only 70 were made, but i have no hard evidence to confirm this ...Anyone know ?

Wow, now that's gotta be super rare. I've never ever seen an r32 with factory airbags. Care to share a pic or two?

I may have witnessed one of the first locally delivered cars to be written off. My old boss bought a brand new black R32 from Hornsby Nissan and a few weeks after he took ownership, got T boned hard by a courier truck right outside our work. Obviously he was totally gutted, but he went on and started importing Skylines himself and made a small fortune in those early days.

And it's here soon.

Q. What month and year did that cover/cover story come out ? ? ? :P

Did you know that Australia was the only GTR export market for Nissan. 100 examples sent to Aus with 30 of those dedicated to racing. The Australian GTR had 115 changes to the Japan model including a trans cooler! Black was the rarest colour with only 26 models made, the remaining 74 were wine red mica or silver.

Did you know that Gibson motorsport wanted to race in Japan but Nismo said no as the Aus cars were much quicker than the Japanese ones and that the Nismo customers would be seriously pissed and wouldnt pay the high Nismo prices at the time.

July 1989, and there is controversy surrounding the nickname which was being thrown around casually among motoring circles until it became officially used by Wheels.

This thread finally started! Here are mine "Did you knows..."

1. The HCR32 Skyline platform debuted in May 1989, producing 9 different versions. There was never a wagon version.

2. The R32 GTR was designed and developed by NISMO.

3. Naganori Itoh, the head designer, used inspiration from the Porsche 959 to develop the R32 GTR, which like the Porsche was only supposed to be a limited production build run.

4. The GTRs all had unique boxy and sharp lines, starting from the very first model which was called “Hakosuka”, which means “Box Skyline”.

5. The car’s racing pedigree was evident from the start. It was intended to be a 400-500hp race inspired sports car with a 2.4L RB24DETT engine. However AWD was eventually added, making the car heavier and thus requiring a bigger engine which we now know as RB26DETT. The engine however had to be detuned to meet the gentleman’s agreement among Japanese motoring manufacturers.

6. The R32 GTR’s 0-60mph time was only 6.2 seconds. However a couple of simple modifications would boost the power and speed to a blistering 4.6 seconds.

7. The R32 GTR would go on to become the most successful model in GTR racing history.

8. The R32 GTR is the most popular GTR ever sold, selling 43,930 units.

9. The most popular colour was white.

10. The RB26DETT was used in the following cars, R32 GTR, R33 GTR, R34 GTR, Stagea 260RS and Tommy Kaira ZZ II.

11. The previous best time at Nordschleife by a production car was by a Porsche 944 turbo at 8’45”, Nissan test driver Hiroyoshi Katoh reset the record with a time of 8'20". Best Motoring managed 8'22"38 probably by Gan-san as their driver.

12. The R32 GT-R dominated Japanese Touring Car Championship (JTCC), winning 29 races from 29 starts, taking the series title every year from 1989 until 1993.

13. It also took 50 races from 50 starts from 1991-1997 (latterly R33) in the N1 Super Taikyu.

14. Nissan produced 100 Australian models of the R32.

15. The R32 GTR made its debut in Australia towards the end of the 1990 Australian Car Championship and winning the Bathurst 1000 classic in 1991 and 1992, ending the previous foreign phenomenon, the Ford Sierra Cosworth.

16. Back in 1989, the R32 GTR started with 16” wheels. The Vspec version in 1993 was finally upgraded with 17” BBS mesh wheels.

17. Another Nissan came out at the same time as the R32 GTR, that was the Nissan Fairlady or 300ZX as it was called internationally.

18. The R32 GTR is the lightest of all the GTR models.

19. Gibson Motorsports ordered 4 R32 GTR road cars in October 1989.

20. The first public appearance of an R32 GTR outside of Japan was in November 1989 during the Australian Grand Prix in Adelaide where it was used as a pace car.

21. The GT-R is officially homologated for Group A racing in March 1990 but was officially raced in June by Mark Skaife where it beat the previous lap record by 2.4 seconds. Its output was 585hp or 436kw. J-Spec GTRs however were more powerful, running at around 600hp in competition.

22. The world’s fastest AWD to do the ¼ mile is an R32 GTR driven by Reece McGregor of New Zealand at 7.57 seconds (305.96km/h).

    • Place the new daughterboard in the case and mount it using the 3 small black rivets provided, and reconnect the 3 factory ribbon cables to the new board Then, use the 3 piggyback cables from the daughterboard into the factory board on top (there are stand offs in the case to keep them apart. and remember to reconnect the antenna and rear cover fan wires. 1 screw to hold the motherboard in place. Before closing the case, make a hole in the sticker covering a hole in the case and run the cable for the android unit into the plug there. The video forgot this step, so did I, so will you probably. Then redo the 4 screws on back, 2 each top and bottom, 3 each side and put the 2 brackets back on.....all ready to go and not that tricky really.
    • Onto the android unit. You need to remove the top screen because there is a daughterboard to put inside the case. Each side vent pops out from clips; start at the bottom and carefully remove upwards (use a trim remover tool to avoid breaking anything). Then the lower screen and controls come out, 4 screws, a couple of clips (including 3 flimsy ones at the top) and 3 plugs on the rear. Then the upper screen, 4 screws and a bunch of plugs and she is out. From there, remove the mounting brackets (2 screws each), 4 screws on the rear, 2 screws top and bottom and 3 screws holding in the small plates on each side. When you remove the back cover (tight fit), watch out for the power cable for the fan, I removed it so I could put the back aside. The mainboard is held in by 1 screw in the middle, 1 aerial at the top and 3 ribbon cables. If you've ever done any laptop stuff the ribbon cables are OK to work with, just pop up the retainer and they slide out. If you are not familiar just grab a 12 year old from an iphone factory, they will know how it works The case should now look like this:
    • Switching the console was tricky. First there were 6 screws to remove, and also the little adapter loom and its screws had to come out. Also don't forget to remove the 2 screws holding the central locking receiver. Then there are 4 clips on either side....these were very tight in this case and needed careful persuading with a long flat screw driver....some force required but not enough to break them...this was probably the fiddliest part of the whole job. In my case I needed both the wiring loom and the central locking receiver module to swap across to the new one. That was it for the console, so "assembly is the reverse of disassembly"
    • But first....while I was there, I also swapped across the centre console box for the other style where the AV inputs don't intrude into the (very limited !) space.  Part# was 96926-4GA0A, 284H3-4GA0B, 284H3-4GA0A. (I've already swapped the top 12v socket for a USB bulkhead in this pic, it fit the hole without modification:) Comparison of the 2: Basically to do the console you need to remove the DS and PS side console trim (they slide up and back, held in by clips only) Then remove the back half of the console top trim with the cupholders, pops up, all clips again but be careful at the front as it is pretty flimsy. Then slide the shifter boot down, remove the spring clip, loose it forever somewhere in the car the pull the shift knob off. Remove the tiny plastic piece on DS near "P" and use something thin and long (most screwdrivers won't fit) to push down the interlock and put the shifter down in D for space. There is one screw at the front, then the shifter surround and ashtray lift up. There are 3 or 4 plugs underneath and it is off. Next is the rear cover of the centre console; you need to open the console lid, pop off the trim covering the lid hinge and undo the 2rd screw from the driver's side (the rest all need to come out later so you can do them all now and remove the lid) Then the rear cover unclips (6 clips), start at the top with a trim tool pulling backwards. Once it is off there are 2 screws facing rearwards to remove (need a short phillips for these) and you are done with the rear of the console. There are 4 plugs at the A/V box to unclip Then there are 2 screws at the front of the console, and 2 clips (pull up and back) and the console will come out.
    • So, a bit of a side trip, but one that might be interesting for people with JDM cars and japanese head units. I know @Pac previously posted about a carplay/android auto adapter he installed which used the AUX input, and @V35_Paul put in one of the Tesla style units that replace both screens. The option I went with was a Lsait LLT-YF-VER5.87_2 (https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Lsailt-8GB-Android-Multimedia-Interface-for_1601187633672.html). Price was $1,150 for a single unit although they are much cheaper if you are willing to buy 2....$857ea. Make you you get the version 2 not version 1, it is faster and has a better UI - this is the manufacturer listing: http://www.lsailt.com/product/348.html. BTW if you've never bought from Alibaba before, don't be concerned....these guys can't stay in business unless they are responsive, ship fast etc, they were excellent (probably faster shipping than most local places) So, this was my task for a lazy Sat afternoon....looks complex but was all done in a few hours (it probably helps that I had some of it apart before so it was a bit familiar). I also decided to add a HD USB drive recorded at the same time and the unit also supports an aftermarket reverse cam (if you don't want to retain factory) and also AV in and HDMI out It looks much worse than it is, in fact in was genuinely all plug and play (no custom wiring at all). This video was pretty good (skipped a few steps), unfortunately they are an Aussie seller but no longer sell this unit (I guess Carplay/AA adapters are easier to install and much cheaper) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5hJfYOB8Dg
