Hey guys’n’girls

I’ve been fooling around with 31s for the last decade (now i feel old :) ). Around 2-3 years ago I had started to think of myself as a fairly ok drifter and not wanting to take my chances with cops in the industrial areas of Canberra, i decided to build a track only car for DA. Only thing is, as most 31 enthusiasts, I’m cheap. Enter Budget Drift car super fun build!!!

Now, 2 years later, DA dies in the ass. So the plan now is to change a few bits(better quality as well) and turn it into a relatively cheap grip car. I plan on entering Supersprints , maybe some MRA days and just kick about trackdays with friends/SAU etc.

Anyway, here is my HR31 2 door GTS that i bought early '08 down in Adelaide, got it for 3k.

Still got a few thing i want to do to it. I'm in the middle of doing the cage atm but after stuff like r32/33 rear subframe setup, splitters etc. here’s where I’m up to...

Engine/Driveline

25/30 (slapper)

ViPEC (44 i think)

JJR coilpacks

Garrett GT35r, 0.82 rear

hi-mount mani

38mm external wastegate

3in exhaust

FMIC mounted where condenser used to be

Greddy copy plenum.

adj exhaust cam gear

Walbro pump

HKS 550cc injetors

Jaz fuel cell

Suspension/Brakes

S14 HSD HRs up front

S13 G4s in the rear

JJR Adj LCAs

JJR tierod ends

Adjustable castor rods

R32 calipers all ‘round with 32 front and rear rotors

G4 hydro

wildwood brake bias adj

Earls braided brake and clutch lines

Hicas gone and Z31 sub frame bushes

Interior

Stripped of course

Nardi wheel

Some old school rally seat

4 point harness

Alloy door/quarter/rear fire wall panels

Alloy dash with speco gauges

Exterior

CSS lip and skirts

HR side and passenger vents

Reverse bonnet vent

$15 crappy mirrors (but like 200g each)

neat setup with the fuel cell :)

cheers, i just recently changed it as it was on the left and side with the pick ups facing in. at the last wakie day it would get fuel serge with over half a tank!

since taken it to a motorkana - no surge at all :rofl2:

what intake is that? (I's assuming Rb25 as well.)

do you mean the plenum? its just a greddy copy for a 25.

if you get one of these, make sure you get it pressure tested and have the face machined before you put it on.

im after some suggestions on spring rates as the car is set up for drift and is very stiff

I know the fronts are 8kg/cm but have no idea about the rear, I also i think its just rears that’s the problem as im bouncing around when putting the power down.

the car weighs 1150kg with out the cage, driver and fuel so say 1330-1350kg all up, and most of the weight came from behind the A-pillar

im also running stock swaybars atm, but adjustable ones are on the cards.

Just thought I'd add a few points to this thread for you James :D

Even thuough this car has been a "budget build" I have been amazed at just how well it goes, with consistent 1.10's at Wakefield (including fuel surge, slipping clutch, too much front camber and Federal 595RS-R tyres) after the work that has been done recently getting the power to a reasonable level (tuned by Glenn at ESP Racing), getting the power to the ground with some suspension tweaks, sorting out the fuel system and putting in plenty of cooling ducts for the engine and brakes, we should be able to get it into the 1.09's or lower with some stickier 'R-spec' rubber.

Here are a few more piccies of the build (hope you don't mind me adding these James) :)

cheers man

cage is nearly done and im thinking of respraying the cabin.

been thinking either all white, all black or maybe black with the cage yellow.

i thought that white might be a bit too reflective but there seems to be a lot of race cars with interiors...

Any suggestions?

  • 4 months later...

ohh yeah i have a thread in here :P

not much to update really. i got the cage in, it and the interior are now black.

took it to a SOTS at wakie for some fun (round 1:10s hand timed) i think the coils are sparking out as it would start to miss something bad around 5k.

also ive order some new smaller front spacers in the effort of trying to dial out some camber. after a full day, a hole inch on the out side of the fronts were still clean! spose thats what you get for have the alignment setup for sliding pinch.gif

been doing a little bit lately. trying to get the car ready for the SAU V REACT day on the 28th. im excited :)

shortened the LCAs 20mm to curb some of the ridiculous camber, also splurged and got a wheel alignment too J now running -3.5deg camber all round, 5deg castor, 2mm tow out at the front and 2mm in at the rear

Installed some cool mirrors (cheapies, but i don't care :P )

P5150067.jpg

mounted my new seat to the floor without rail as my head was being push to one side by the cage padding. Also put the fifth point in for the harness.

P5150073.jpg

P5150072.jpg

Got in some splitfires to replace the f**ked JJR coils. Hopefully these will hast more than a half dozen runs...

    • I might be way off the mark here.. there must be a T junction under the manifold. That takes manifold pressure through a check valve prior to the T, one side splits out to this bleed off orifice, the other straight to the wastegate actuators.
    • Carrying out some engine due diligence before my first drive in a 260RS that has been in storage for 10+ years, and found two lines that are susposed to be plumbed into the boost control solenoid. One of the lines (the wastegate boost supply line) to actuate the gates, had a bolt in one end blocking it. The other line (main boost signal line) from the very rear of the intake manifold (RB26DETT) and runs up to the boost controller had this pill in the end of it as seen in photos. Other than the obvious (T28 Ceramic turbos might well be cooked)  Can anyone shed any light on if there is any validity at all with this mod, bleeding a constant fixed rate of manifold boost pressure off through this 3mm hole?  Is it deliberate?  Was this a 90s Jap mod done to RB26's? Or has someone just fitted this without any idea of what happens to ceramic T28s if they are not gate controlled?
    • This looks great! Awesome to have the 5 speed with an LSD in this. The Recaro's look like SR2's or SR3's. It's a shame they've been retrimmed as they would have looked sweet in their original colours. I think I'd want my agent to be a little more up front and informative too. I've never imported but I reckon it would make me a little nervous, so the more info the better.
    • Thanks for doing that Duncan! Makes you a good person in my books. We don't get kangaroos or wombats here. But we have bats and it's similar. AFAIK it's often the mums with a baby attached that get hit because they drop lower when starting from a tree. If you hit an animal, check on it. https://www.ifaw.org/au/resources/wildlife-rescue-app An app to get the closest wildlife rescue contact.
