Redirect the exhaust flow to pass through the charcoal canister first? Though you would probably introduce some backpressure via 10mm hoses to the canister itself and negate the straight pipe.

And then into the passenger cabin

he wants to tune out the smell from a decat exhaust.

the only way to do that is by changing the mixtures, which would alter the motors tune etc. not advisable.

if you want to run decat you will need to wear the risk of $15,000. pretty much end of story.

otherwise you are welcome to lose 3kw and run a decent cat for the price of an extra $400

FYI $15,000 > $400

This "fine" has gone from "$10000", to "$750" (I believe Stao/Hypergear was the one to cop this fine) to now $15000.

I wouldn't be surprised if it were nothing more than a defect notice at this rate.

Also, OP - just run it SO LEAN that the engine won't even fire up. Then you'll never have any exhaust gas passing through the system, and therefore no smell!

I have been of the understanding that it was $15,000 for the last decade, unless times have changed.

It will be a circumstantial penalty, depending on your situation. Yet do you really want to take the risk? And do you really want to leave noobs with the impression they may just get a defect notice?

Obviously it is the owners decision, yet a well known POOR one at that. A few KW really isnt worth the hassle.

A screamer on the other hand :P

Can you still get a fine if your car is Unregestered but driving on a permit? My exhaust is straight through no cat not muffler... just say if i went to a workshop and a cop pulls me over but im on a permit is that ok?

it will be tough to do but leaning it out at idle and cruise etc should reduce the emissions a bit and thus reduce the smell too but basically without a cat you are going to be up against it to change things much just by altering the tune. unless it's rich as all hell at the moment in which case a tune up with a leaner AFR across the board would certainly help. but to be honest if it's a problem then you are better off spending the money on a good cat.

A cat turns carbon monoxide and unburnt fuel to carbon dioxide and water.

It hasn't really got anything to do with the tune unless his is tuned very rich. He can lean the motor out but it will still have the smell of running no cat since the smell is carbon monoxide.

To answer the OP's question in a serious manner, no you can not. Whatever you have read about "EVO's" doing it, you have miss understood.

This.

Agreed you cannot tune out the issue, but you can centainly try to change the mixture so the smell is not so evident.

Either way I think it is a silly idea, just put a damn cat on or wear the risk.

Im not sure about state to state but as a general the car is out of the cops 'jurisdiction' when being driven on a permit unless it is- 1: dangerous to drive, 2: being driven dangerously.

so based on this the decat is fine on a permit...

    • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!
    • Yeah mate, never miss it.
    • Any going to watch World Time Attack at SMSP this year?
    • Appreciate the correction on the "ground", that will make a huge difference to looking at this. That makes complete sense about AF70/AF71 which is what I had come down to being the issue, one of these. I'll have another look in the ignition wiring when I get a chance next week. I'll also make up a jumper wire for running that AF73 test.  ECU is fine, relay itself is fine, pump harness is fine and the pump itself is fine. I am going to upgrade the Walbro 255 anyway with a DW300 I have since I need to replace the fuel sender and I'm going to upgrade the FPR with my chasebays kit ready for new plenum/injectors/dbw, but I'll get this working first. That's why this is so frustrating.
