Hey guys,

I asked this in the past, but people misunderstood my question and kept recommending V8s due to their ability to put power down regardless of the where the revs are at. I previously asked at any time, which car provides the highest acceleration. What I meant was at any speed, any time and any car, which SINGLE point will have your eye balls being sucked into the back of your head more than any other.

e.g:

A worked GTR launching from stand still.

A 1000hp Supra the moment it comes onto boost from say... 20kph.

A lightweight snappy Silvia from a rolling start.

An Evo shooting from 30kph.

I dunno, I'm just making shit up, but what car (within a reasonable budget, no Veyrons etc) will achieve the highest acceleration G's at any one moment. Reason I'm asking is because my mate just bought a stock Evo, and its quick, crazy quick, at least it feels that way. I know there are faster cars out there, I've been in them, but they just don't feel as quick. IMO the seat sucking feeling of raw high G acceleration is one of the best feelings you can get from a street car.

I also heard stiff suspension and harder Recaro type seats (like the Evo) has can give the illusion of higher G's too due simply to the fact the seat isn't absorbing any of the force, this true?

What model evo? They certainly are not "crazy quick" from factory. Not at all.

Maximum G force reached is simple once you understand what it means. It means accelerating in a direction greater than what gravity accelerates at opposed to you. So regardless at what speed it is or in what car it is, it is the vehicle that can accelerate the quickest. From a vehicle point of view, it is being able to rotate the wheels as fast as possible without slipping them (losing traction).

So really from a "reasonable" sense of view, an AWD car launching from stand still with a huge amount of power is the easiest to achieve.

My wagon was the fasted accelerating car Ive ever been in. To give you an idea, if you had your sunnies sitting on your head they would be in the back seat by the end of 2nd gear. It was pretty brutal.

I understand what it is, but I'm looking for peak, sudden, sharp power. Not a nice linear (which is more ideal for track purposes) power curve.

Put it this way (not that I'd ever use this as a basis for buying a car), which car will give your passengers the greatest "OMG I'm going to die" feeling from acceleration alone. Also, I know a stock evo isn't crazy quick, I'm just saying they feel way and was asking why.

probably coz the evo has a rather large turbo for it's engine size. so it comes on relatively hard compared to other stock set ups. therefore you get a sudden rush of acceleration. thats the G's sensation you are talking about that makes it feel quick.

linear delivery gets you further, but doesnt feel as quick.

Phil is right about fastest acceleration producing the greatest amount of G-forces. As for lateral G forces in the corners, that will be the car that can turn sharpest at the fastest speed and maintain traction.

The feeling of G-forces on the other hand, is another thing entirely and there's alot of perception involved. I believe that a car producing the most rapid change in G-force will give you the biggest feeling of being thrown into the seat. In all cars, this will be a launch off the line as you are going from zero G to something. Linear power delivery vehicles, such as N/A V8, whilst feeling fast off the line, will quickly have your senses adjust to the G-forces during acceleration. The speedo will be going up faster than it feels. Non-linear power delivery, like going from off boost to on boost in a car with a massive turbo, will offer a big "punch" that rapidly changes the acceleration G-force making it feel very fast (almost like "launching" from a rolling start). But it's all a matter of perception and your own idea of what constitutes the feeling of going fast. For what you want Kez, it's an engine with an oversized turbo that suddenly comes alive at 4500-5000rpm like a rollercoaster reaching a downhill. Enter the torque.

An interesting way to test all of it is to use a G-tech with constant G-force mode selected.

in any car the most G's you will feel will be launching in first gear. AWD will be the best for this as you can simply side step the clutch at high rpm (and hope something doesn't go bang, LOL).

if you want something that gives the feeling of quick acceleration then a lag monster is what you are after. something with a big turbo that doesn't come on song until high in the rev range. it doesn't even have to make that much power, but if the turbo kicks in hard then it will give the impression of having lots of power. i've been in a 32 with a t71 (i think) on it. didn't make boost until about 5500rpm, made less power than my stock turbo'd 33 and ran a high 14 at the drags, but when it came on boost it felt great. it was just a pity that even a granny in an excel was already a pair of tail lights in the distance due to being gutless below 5500rpm.

Get a litre bike ;)

+1, You'll spend a LOT on a car before you get anywhere near one (although I realise this isn't a price vs. performance argument).

The violence of a 1000cc bike is something that few people appreciate until they experience it. As is the case with big power cars.

My K6 GSXR 1000 still shocks me sometimes, even after 4years, and most pillions lose the ability to process the experience until about 5 minutes later, at which point most can only say "I cannot believe how fast that is"

I had a friend with almost exactly the same car as Marc described. Made (only) 325hp, big laggy (5500rpm) turbo in an r32, epic screamer pipe too, i think that gave us an extra few mental kilowatts, felt amazing but would be a pain to drive...

I doubt anything will beat the G forces of those top fuel dragsters that do 0-400m in 3 or 4 seconds. In saying that, doesn't iPod have an application that senses G forces?

I think its called Racechrono..thats the one on my nokia anyway..

i've got a dyno app on my phone. i managed to get 1200+hp at the fingertips, LOL

Highest G's in straight line aceleration you'll ever experience will be when that 22 wheeler kenworth rear ends you at a set of lights.

Regardless of what car you're driving.

Lol.

As far as cars go, you can't beat a highly modified AWD car for the perception of gigantic G forces. For example, highly modified GTR with AWD coming on to full boost is a wickedly frightening experience. It's absolutely awesome.

The problem with this style of non-linear power delivery is that you get the feeling that you're really just hanging on for dear life and hoping that you don't lose control. I can only imagine how much more pronounced it is on a sportsbike.

    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
    • Here's an idea, answer the questions I asked you as they are trying to work out WHY the LSD will be binding up in a straight line.
    • You haven't driven many modern cars then have you? Most of them have sfa steering feel with their stupid electric bullshit steering systems.
