Hi guys, this stuff came out of a car I recently bought and I have no need for it as I don't take things that seriously. They are a Motec timing beacon and a Motec dash with loom. I'm not sure what features are on the dash but knowing the previous owner of the vehicle I'd suggest it's loaded with all options (I'll investigate this with Motec and the last owner before selling them). I've never used them but they came off a fully prep'ed Targa car and were ll working fine as of the last TT.

So, my questions are what do I have, what are they worth and how best do I go about selling them (aside from this forum)?

Thanks.

Without knowing the full specs of the dash, it is hard to put a price on it. have a look at the Motec website as I believe that there is a way that you can find out exactly how the dash is configured using the serial number of the unit. IIRC, you have to email the number to a certain address.

eek...made to sell it out of your car. Good things to have and understand if you are racing the 996. I am betting the dash will be worth about 5k with loom and sensors etc....2nd hand they dont seem to get much cheaper then 3.5-4k even for the lower spec units.

Keep it! :)

what's this mean then? :) 'eek...made to sell it out of your car.' It's out of the car and it'll be a palava getting it back in. It's not back lit and given my car sees road work too, this is a pain. It's getting sold!

if you have a modern ecu (motec, haltch, auronic...etc) the dash can be fed data via the CAN bus. Only needs 1 plug for power and data. I run all m sensors into my Haltec, and display and log it on the dash.

those dashes are the ducks nuts. can you option in backlighting after purchasing it? motec like doing stuff like that.

sorry...mad , not made :) If you are selling it then I will swap you the Motec setup for an old VDO boost gauge and speedo

I just checked under the hood and there is no turbo, so it's the speedo and cash my way.

You bought a GT3? Awesome!

Yeah, I did Steve. It's a great car but let me tell you the common garden variety GTR stacks up very well against it. Very well indeed. It's only when you compare the GTR to a car like this you realise how great they are. I'm yet to punt the GT3 around PI and Sandown as fast as my 300kw GTR.....

I'm yet to call MoTeC but as soon as I know what I've got and done some further research on pricing I'll post up all details.

Well done!

GT3's are stacks of fun. I know what you mean about comparing it against a GTR but I think 9/10 people would rather have the porka over a datto :)

Got any pics?

Are you scrapping the GTR build for targa and using the GT3 instead or is te GTR still happening?

  • 2 weeks later...

Well it's an older model ADL with 1mb of data logging and 30 IOs. I visited MoTeC this arvo and got it checked out. By the time I left I decided not to sell it. They said to replace the current set up new would be circa $15k and that mine was still pretty useful. I got a full demo of the data logging capabilities and at that point I wanted to keep it. I'll post up if I change my mind.

As an aside it was an impressive facility and the tech support guy I spoke with was very enthusiastic and helpful and free with his time. I suspect this product is well supported.

    • I seem to the be only person that is using a Haltech 2500 on an NA motor, I've installed a Bosch DBW throttle body to the OEM intake manifold and am having problems maintaining AFR even with the wideband o2.  It will run extremely rich at idle and up to redline, but under load it will go extremely lean in the 20s and i'm essentially having to rev it over 4k and feather the clutch to get it up to speed.  I've read a few other threads of about the butterfly, it seems removing the vacuum to it is supposed to have it remain open, i've noticed no difference under 4k with the vacuum line to it plugged.  I'm hoping someone here has had luck using the NA manifold with Haltech, and if they happen to have a tune for it.
    • I don't know any details, but I really wouldn't be surprised if they do it as a LHD only version, at least initially.
    • Thanks for the replies everyone. Definitely a coolant push. Oil catch can is empty and always has been. As the engine is out now I'll be having a good look over things. I do have some detonation on the piston tops from a trigger issue back about 5 years ago. I felt it and shut off then bought a new ecu and changed the trigger. Never been an issue since. It never hurt the power, its made almost 80hp more since that incident but I will pull the bearing caps to take a look. If the bearings are damaged I will do a bottom end refresh. Head is being re conditioned at the moment and the block will be cleaned and checked to ensure it's flat. I'll go with a kameari gasket and see how it ends up. The other thing I'm not super keen on is the cylinder colours. I suspect this is from the inlet manifold. The plan will be to put it back together, retune and then stick a plazmaman billet inlet on it and retune. I'm happy with the power, if it makes a little more, then great, but I would rather just make everything more efficient at this stage.
    • Maybe they'll look to do a bunch of presales to help inject some cash fast for their financial issues...
    • Does it also misfire equally when revving?   Josh is very correct in what you should do. The coilpack harness wiring loom itself is a known problem due to its age and the number of heat cycles it has gone through. Throwing parts at a vehicle to diagnose the issue isn't a smart or good way to do it. Secondly, you may have a bad coil pack, you pop replacements in, they fix that issue, but messing with the harness breaks it, so the issue persists. So now you think "well it wasn't the coil packs" and have to continue chasing your tail, potentially swapping back in your shit coil packs and returning the good ones (yes, I've seen people do this because 'it wasn't the problem' and they want to save money). And suddenly, you've got two issues with the same symptoms...   Diagnose, don't use the spare parts shotgun.
