I got $6000 which was going to put a new engine in my car with a GTST gearbox, but I've had one of those 'maturity' hits recently and I've decided against driving a turbo.

Soooo... what can I do for $6000? I'm thinking exhaust, headers, coil-overs. Anything else that'll give me a bit more pick-up?

i guess your on p plates hence not wanting to drive a turbo? if so save your $6k till you can drive a turbo and get one.

otherwise wtf buy a turbo.

Meh. I like my car, I want something nice now. Not fussed about like 200kw +, I just want more than the 95-100 I'm guessing I'm getting.

I was going to put an RB25DET in, but I've decided against it. Got pulled over at an RBT station and he went through the normal three questions, "where are you going? Have you been drinking? Is this the non-turbo version?"

But he actually got me to pop the hood, and while he looked I sat there thinking "if I had done the conversion, I'd be f**ked right now". So I'm not going ahead with it.

I feel like I'm missing something other than the generic exhaust / intake / suspension stuff...

Spend it on a new avatar, that one is woeful

Lol but srsly save your money, you'll spend a packet on extractors/exhaust and it will make bugger all difference. Coilovers might be a good idea though, you'll appreciate a lower, better handling car AND they aren't non-turbo specific, so you could sell them to a GTS-T owner later on

Yeah.. but I've got the stock exhaust so it's got that horrible rattling sound at 3k RPM.

The coilovers are a definite, I'm trying to make some time to get to a suspension place.. but it's so damn hard to :P

and LOL at the avatar, yeah, I just needed a picture. I hope you find my new one slightly more tasteful.

Exhaust. It won't make it much faster, but it will sound nicer. Just spend the time and money making sure you get a nice sounding one.

then suspension - you can do it yourself. I can't comment for R34 specific but usually Hypermax III 7 & 5kg/mm is the go for fast street(not the sport or the II version). ie. Rubber upper mounts and the softer rate than most coilovers, plus monotube.(sport has harder rate)

$6k is too much, buy some BC coilovers (99% the same as GReddy type S) $1300, some Whiteline Bars $600 tops, and nice cat back for under $1k and then spend the rest on a holiday or towards a house deposit.

It is your money, but take it from someone who spent every cent they earnt on cars and guess what? Now all I have is a heap of debt, because instead of paying off loans quickly I bought parts.

For a suspension choice you could always go something like a GReddy type s or some BC Br's.. Also a good CAI ain't bad for that extra throttle response. There are lots of other mods you can do but bang for buck wise you are ur only gonna get your money's worth if it was a turbo. But I'm sure u already know that

Lol you stole my idea while I was typing :-(

See there's your problem.. What you should have been thinking was "If I beeped my horn right now I bet I could get him to smack his head on something would be soooo funny"

do the cat back exhaust ($500), get the bc coilovers and some whiteline swaybars for under 2grand allup and fit yourself, rims/tyres for a couple grand. Perhaps a big brake kit ready for the engine conversion (conceptzperformance sells 324mm rotors with brackets for your front brake upgrade for around $600aud delivered.)

then put the rest away and save more (again) for the RB25det conversion, when you can legally drive a turbocharged vehicle.

dont waste it on ecu tuning, extractors etc, for the $$ spent the gains are not impressive.

yes, love it :D

do your suspension yourself, it's really not hard. Basic tools and a mate is all you need

Buy nice high quality rims. You can transfer them to your next car, sell them or just keep them for when you turbo this current one.

TE37s, Meisters, CE28s, Advan RS-Ds... so many nice ones.

It's NA dude.. so 4 stud gheyness

5 stud GTS25t brake conversion will fix that (~$500).

If he wants to spend the money on his NA, let him do so. I'm quite happy with my NA after doing all the mods suggested in here even after getting my full license.

No one's mentioned LSD aswell. Try and find an R33 viscous LSD, maybe cost you around $200-300.

Depending on what state you are in - modifying the car for performance is illegal be it a turbo or N/A model anyway.

In Vic, make power mods, you still get boned even if it's N/A ;)

IMO 6,000 you will see not even 50% of the potential you could from a turbo motor.

6k spent on an N/A, you'll be lucky to go from 90-100rwkw to 140rwkw.

Where as with a RB25DET conversion you'll go from 140rwkw to 200rwkw and still have money left over.

I think the best choice is hold onto the N/A, get off P's and then put that 6k towards a nicely modded GTS-t :)

Otherwise, do what Keiran said and buy some decent wheels.

Only issue there is - insurance probably wont cover the full value of them

    • Harness is for a s1 Rb25det, and it is engine and lower harness.  the old harness had broken off plugs and was in very rough condition/exposed wires and splices etc. it is not able to be put back on the car, I could visually inspect to see if they had rewired any pins on the ecu plug. The fuel pump definitly isn’t turning off it’s an external pump and very loud you can hear it. Will look at the other harness tonight, am also going to pull the fuel rail and watch the injectors spray, will update here with what I find. Pretty sure at this point it has to be something to do with injectors because car will fire up on starting fluid and cas is clicking the Injectors. Fuel pressure is steady 43psi
    • Check the injectors flow evenly, and are actually flowing what you and the ECU think they should be flowing. If it's starting up on starter fluid, you have a fuel issue. Is it possible under cranking your fuel pump is turning off?   The harness you replaced, is that the whole engine harness? Do yourself a test, and drop the old harness on and plug it into the Z32 ECU. It's possible they've wired things different. From memory S1 to S2 is different in RB25 and you may have a wrong loom
    • I haven’t pulled the injectors to watch them spray yet but they are clicking from the cas and all of the spark plugs are wet with fuel. I’ve thought the cylinders were being flooded from the beginning and was hoping fuel pressure would fix it. Tonight I am going to pull the rail and watch the injectors spray. Don’t know how to test/diagnose if the plugs are firing in correct sequence but that should be a timing thing and as far as timing goes my car still has the half moon for the cas can only install it 1 way. And my mechanical timing is 100% correct I posted photos above. Confirmed with the balancer on and off.
    • I checked spark on all cylinders and they all visually have spark with the plug pulled and grounded, but plug 1 is the only one that fouled. This was a running swap that blew up and was rebuilt by a machine shop, put a new wiring specialties harness and did all gaskets, studs, and bolts while it was out.  compression is 135-150 across all cylinders. Aside from that from my understanding with the z32 ecu and maf the car should start regardless. The wiring for TPS and the dual 02 sensor/ dual knock sensor stuff shouldn’t actually stop the car from starting or even running well, (just slightly rich)  they just give fault codes. Car supposedly is supposed to start as long as you have z32 afm and ecu with the nistune base map and that’s info coming from a well known and trusted tuner who does a lot with SR/RB (Rsenthalpy). After more trouble shooting today where I’m at right now is that the cas is sending signal to the injectors they click while spinning the rotor, Fuel pressure is now set at 43psi, all cylinders have good compression and all of the plugs looked great (just wet with fuel) except for cylinder 1 which was very black (cylinder 1 has 150psi compression). all of the coils generate spark if pulled out and grounded out on the head. On the fuel pump car just pops into the exhaust. On starting fluid car will fire off. Hard to tell if all cylinders are firing off but definitley a couple. sounds like all of them but it’s only for 3-5 seconds hard to tell.
