New rule: No volunteers - no passenger rides!

Yeah, that makes sense, get the people that drivers invited to come up and share in the experience of the day with them to stand around by themselves or with strangers to assist run a Club Day when there's how many SAU-Vic members & or drivers standing around during the day?? /sarcasm

Having just run another clubs 1st DECA Day; which was closely modelled on a SAU Day, Driver-Helpers are only suited to 4 key positions; Starter & Finish Box Controllers @ Long Wang & the Skid Pan in the morning sessions. There is just too much turn over time if you try using them in any other position. Additionally, without proper instruction noobie volunteers can slow things down enough in other positions that you might have to cut events. In the arvo sessions, a 'rotating roster' could/should be employed to make sure ALL drivers particpate in the running the day, drivers who don't assist during the day, could then have time penalties handed to them as a sign of 'un-sportsman like' behaviour.

I know what it takes to run a good DECA day and while the SAU Motorsport Team have pretty much all the days processes/tasks nailed down to a tee, there needs to be a step up in involvement/execution by other non-competing SAU members as well as other event participants to fill the few gaps that remain, rather than first drawing upon guests/possible future participants.

I'm up to volunteer for the next one, give me time to re-engineer the Lancer. Maybe see if I can fit a twin turbo 4l v6 under the bonnet with double bogey FWD.

I've driven down to help out and not enter FFS, anyone standing around just has no excuse.

I also drive down to help as I have no plans to compete again. It would be nice if other people did put their hands up instead of leaving the event organisers scratching for helpers before it starts.

Helping out on the day is actually quite fun...you get to play an integral role in a day that everybody loves so much!

I dont think you can force anyone to volunteer really...but everybody (that hasnt helped much) needs to clean their act up and get their asses helping!

I think everyone, especially regular entrants into DECA should ask themselves, how many DECA events have I done and how many have I helped run?

My answer was I think 8, and 1.

I bet alot of people's answer to the second part would be 0.

The day would be much simpler if guests helped out. A rotating roster with drivers would just be confusing and slow things down overall imo. I mean you'd have to cut into our time by teaching people how to do each position, they'd make mistakes, there may be safety issues with where people leave cars, not being fully aware of where they're meant to stand etc.

Besides I know a few people who flat out refuse to volunteer. They know its more fun to be a passenger and despite my harassment they won't do it. If they said "no volunteers, no passengers" it would force those people to help out or stay out of the cars either way. Its better than the alternative: cancel the event.

Plus, like Femno said its FUN being a volunteer, I'd much rather help out than stand around and get a couple of passenger runs on the wangs (boring). Not only that, but if you help out you can approach almost any car in the afternoon and they're almost obligated to give you a spin during the battles.

I think I've only ever competed once, but volunteered on another occasion. I can't make it as much as I'd like due to other committments, but like Matt said, it's quite fun. And if you are a keen photographer, you can get some of the best positions for photos particularly on the long wang.

I would expect drivers to be more in tune to how or what they should do as opposed to some random that was dragged along to a "beginner drift day" as i heard someone say recently...

Having just helped to organize a deca day recently I know how messy it can be when you do not have enough helpers or when they have no idea what to do...its a pity that we're struggling to find helpers nowadays....

WTF...there are spectators that have participated in DECAs before that just dont help; thats his whole point...as well as getting people up to DECA who arent driving to help out. Some people come just to watch but dont help.

At least he is making constructive comments...who are you tell him hes wrong?

It's not that hard to click a stop watch or put cones back in they're place mate. There are experienced people on the other end of the radio whenever help is needed and from my experience help is less than a minute away at any time.

Doing timing and cone removal is also a great way to meet the drivers and have quick chats and tee up passenger rides for later in the day.

Everyone can help out. They will be put in a place that suits there experience at these events.

You're missing the point, again. Volunteers don't have to worry about anything but their job, they'll have someone walk them over to where they stand, tell them what they do and leave it at that. Simple.

First time drivers are confused enough about participating let alone assisting as well. I can foresee a lot of drivers dumping their cars in inappropriate places to do their starting, timing etc, or standing in the wrong place and causing all sort of safety hazards. Then you'll have drivers going to the wrong position, relieving the wrong person and causing all sorts of hold ups and confusion.

Ok...lets stop with the volunteer talk now...every deca aftermath thread seems to go off on a tangent for some reason...i remember a whole load of BS about heel/toes once and then something about double clutching or something like that...enough...

More sh!t talk about awd vs rwd or boats vs planes or godzilla vs mothra please...

    • I have no hard data to report, but I have to say, having driven it to work and back all week, mostly on wet roads (and therefore mostly not able to contemplate anything too outrageous anywhere)..... it is real good. I turned the boost controller on, with duty cycle set to 10% (which may not be enough to actually increase the boost), and the start boost set to 15 psi. That should keep the gate unpressurised until at least 15 psi. And rolling at 80 in 5th, which is <2k rpm, going to WOT sees the MAP go +ve even before it crosses 2k and it has >5 psi by the time it hits 90 km/h. That's still <<2.5k rpm, so I think it's actually doing really well. Because of all the not-quite-ideal things that have been in place since the turbo first went on, it felt laggy. It's actually not. The response appears to be as good as you could hope for with a highflow.

    • Oh, it's been done. You just run a wire out there and back. But they have been known to do coolant temp sensors, MAP sensors, etc. They're not silly (at Regency Park) and know what's what with all the different cars.

    • There are advantages, and disadvantages to remapping the factory.   The factory runs billions of different maps, to account for sooooo many variables, especially when you bring in things like constantly variable cams etc. By remapping all those maps appropriately, you can get the car to drive so damn nicely, and very much so like it does from the factory. This means it can utilise a LOT of weird things in the maps, to alter how it drives in situations like cruise on a freeway, and how that will get your fuel economy right down.   I haven't seen an aftermarket ECU that truly has THAT MANY adjustable parameters. EG, the VAG ECUs are somewhere around 2,000 different tables for it to work out what to do at any one point in time. So for a vehicle being daily driven etc, I see this as a great advantage, but it does mean spending a bit more time, and with a tuner who really knows that ECU.   On the flip side, an aftermarket ECU, in something like a weekender, or a proper race car, torque based tuning IMO doesn't make that much sense. In those scenarios you're not out there hunting down stuff like "the best way to minimise fuel usage at minor power so that we can go from 8L/100km to 7.3L/100km. You're more worried about it being ready to make as much freaking power as possible when you step back on the loud pedal as you come out of turn 2, not waiting the extra 100ms for all the cams to adjust etc. So in this scenario, realistically you tune the motor to make power, based on the load. People will then play with things like throttle response, and drive by wire mapping to get it more "driveable".   Funnily enough, I was watching something Finnegans Garage, and he has a huge blown Hemi in a 9 second 1955 Chev that is road registered. To make it more driveable on the road recently, they started testing blocking up the intake with kids footballs, to effectively reduce air flow when they're on the road, and make the throttle less touchy and more driveable. Plus some other weird shit the yankee aftermarket ECUs do. Made me think of Kinks R34...
