haha yeah maybe with another part of hte car, but if hte gearbox goes i can't see it causing you to cause any other damage?

Regardless I agree with zahos, if your taking it on track, straining it etc.. then sure, but for a daily driver VMX80 is a very good oil...

Hmm to summarise because I'm lazy. Good point about a gearbox being not worth 20-30-40k however I once blew a gearbox at just under 200km/h and I can tell you that I'm lucky to be here.

Had a gear come up through the floor pan, and miss me, but still. It sheared one of my exhaust pipes off causing the back section to drop straight into the ground lifting my back wheels into the air at about 180, splashed very hot gear oil on my leg and also on the exhaust causing the cabin to fill with acrid smoke so i could barely see where i could barely point the car anyway.

Luckily the driveshaft was held up by the handbrake cable and didn't drop down too. Instant chop job otherwise.

Apart from that freak occurance, I own a Skyline so I can drive hard and that's what I do. Witness the fact that I rarely get 300kms from a tank of fuel. I feel the car deserves to be looked after.

To be honest, it surprises me how many Skyline owners drive like grannies most of the time.

anyhow, I ain't no granny driver myself, I do like to reach the speed limit in a very short period of time, but that still doesn't tell me that the oil I use isn't good enough, hence why i still can't justify the cost....

If I were reaching speeds of 200km, then I would consider moving to a better product, but i still think that there are no gains for me in particular at the moment.

are we talking about adding roil to redline here?

Yep... once i get some redline i plan to test it using a friction brake test machine... and see where it cracks... then add roil.. and do the same thing... i'll post some results then justify whether its worth using redline and roil, or just some top motul gearbox oil and roil... in my gemi rally car i plan to use redline and roil, though for a daily driver i expect the results to be exactly the same with roil and motul.. so like its been said... daily driver, redline ain't really worth it.. especially if your gonna use roil.....

On a serious note (not being sarcastic or trying to rub it in)... has anybody who's tried roil and bought it off me got anything bad to say... ie, more fuel cause of more boost etc... or something similar... i'm open to critisism..

I think the main reason people opt to use Redline is that there are ALOT of skylines out there with crunchy gearboxes.

And on EVERY occasion where redline lightweight shockproof was used, the crunchyness went away.

In my r32, 2nd gear would crunch (going 1st to 2nd) at anything above 5000rpm if shifting at normal shift speeds.

tried some synthetic penrite stuff, still the same.

I bought the redline oil and after about 50km of driving, the crunch never came back.

to me, $100 on 3.8L of Redline oil was a great investment. Considering that the gearbox oil doesn't get changed every 5000kms like the engine oil does which tends to cost $50 at least.

Anyway, in my current car (S14) the gearbox is the best I've ever owned, and I will not bother using redline as I don't see the need.

Who knows. It was an HX by the way. I mean who knows whast the previous 14 owners did to that thing. Apart from that I guess the old M21 is not the most robust piece of equipment. Was originally designed to go behind a 1600 4 pot and I had a warmed up 308 redlining in 4th.

I guess my point was only that you should look after your machinery as best you can cos it can kill you.

abobob: thats nutz!!! i hope that doesn't happen to me :) but would redline of prevented that?

Its actually not that uncommon. Same goes for flywheels when they let go.

Edit: To clarrify, its not uncommon when a g/box decides to die that cogs start sheering bits off. However (and luckily) they don't let go that often like that.

Fair enough, it it's tried and tested with extra crunchy gearboxes, then why not. For me the crunch was only apparent going from 2nd -> 4th, and it wasn't that bad. If I went 3rd -> 4th it never happened...

If I gunned it off the line, up to 60km/h in 1st, then straight to fourth it happened every time.

Now that the roil has done over 700km in my gearbox I cannot get it to crunch at all..... Notchyness has been reduced, and the gears go in much smoother now, and the car feels great.

I will definately using this stuff again....

as for take a look around at a few skyline website and pages around the internet, even the factory specs as well.

I must say though I'm quite shocked and very disapointed if that is the real life changing speeds of the Skyline box, so much so, I'd call it a pathic gearbox at best, as my 1981 car could flog it without any problems or questions needed of it.

It wouldn't surprise me, if 3-cyclinder echo's were chewing you up at the lights.

No wonder you need roil your car is struttering and craping it self, because it's in the wrong bloody gear at a slow speed.

How many people have posted about dodgy gearboxes here? 5 maybe? Haven't counted, don't care.

And how many registered users are there to this website? 4000 roughly.

I'm presuming that you're generally bagging Skylines here because it's a bit hard to tell since you can't spell and you write sentences that make no sense.

You drive a 1981 "car" because that's all you can afford. Get some education and a job.

    • You're not the first person that's said that about this car lol. A Touring wagon GT in Spark yellow mica would be the dog's danglies 😆 I will keep an eye out for a future purchase for sure. The seats are almost like the OEM Recaros... electric adjustment for fore/aft and tilt movements except reclining.   
    • Yes!! I love these! It's a shame its not the wagon though!   Thank everything that's holy that it doesn't have the interior of the Aussie delivered ones. Those seats are so much nicer.

    • 2001 BE5D Subaru Legacy B4 RSK (3rd gen) EJ208 (pink injector) Twin Turbo 280PS 5-speed manual Full time 4WD "RSK" grade which means all of the above LQC option which means stock rear spoiler  I got it primarily to export to someone outside Japan who was interested. These BE5 Legacy B4 RSKs are going through a bit of a resurgence right know in Japan as they are one of the few cars from the "turbo, manual, RWD/4WD, 280hp gentleman's agreement era" cars that don't require stupid money to purchase. Which for some people might be a good opportunity to get as a base for restoration. If I can't find anyone to purchase it I will certainly be doing that myself over the long term. Why? Because it's properly fast in stock form, handles well enough for a GT sedan, there's still enough aftermarket and (if you can wait a while) genuine part support to make it a restoration candidate (<-- that will only get worse over time so it's a case of do it now or choose get a BL5 4th Gen). Mechanically it's fine, has only 89,200kms on the odometer. The problem with this car is that the body and exterior trims are weathered from at least the last 10 years being parked outdoors. I'm the 3rd owner, the first owner was the one that had it for 14 years and barely drove it, had a low-speed front impact (which didn't damage anything behind the radiator support) and got it fixed and sold it. The 2nd owner put most of the kms on it and parked it outside for the last 10 years, hence the door rubbers have seen better days but if you overlook those cosmetic details, it presents pretty nicely. There is some minor rust on the LH rear wheel arch which I'll have looked at too at some stage.  Also as you'd expect from a car this age, the clear top coat is gone, leaving a satin finish on the roof.  Mechanically it's fine (as you would expect from a car with less than 100K kms) but the steering does feel slightly vague around the centre position at higher speeds. So first on the list is to get the steering rack bushes looked at. There's also the Lock button on the remote which doesn't work, but the Open button does.... it means that the anti-theft system thinks it's always open? It seems like if you open the car and don't start the engine within 3 mins or so the anti-theft kicks in again without any beeps or signals. So if you got to start it after that, it won't. You have to push the open button again. That's how I understand it anyway. Just a small irritation but not a big problem to sort out. There's only one mod, the Wangan SPL muffler. Just a tad louder than stock. It's a really good mod for those who don't want to wake the neighbours but still want to hear a more prominent unequal length header EJ20 sound. Anyway I hope to get all those things done eventually, that is unless someone wanted to import it to their country from Japan (where I live). I'm open for negotiations as I really would like a Skyline... but this will definitely suffice in the meantime 🙂 *Disclaimer: This is how I picked it up from the dealer, minus the stuff on the back seat. I haven't cleaned the engine bay or done a thorough exterior clean, aside from spray painting the wipers.
