Hey all,

my turbo has started making these wierd noise, mind you only on the dyno under full load in 4th. Its like a loud trumpet sound.

We tried to look for any lose clamps for an air leak. couldnt find anything. Pulled off intake piping and realised the turbo had shit in it and has a bit of shaft play.

Still made the power though so dont know if the turbo is on its way out or something else?

Vid

any help would be appreciated

cheers :)

whatever it is, its coming from the wastegate or when the wastegate opens

if you hear the engine you can it ramp on boost and once what i would call peak boost is made, shortly after you get that wierd whining sound

id say its something on the wastegate or the boost control system (that opens when peak boost is reached)

In a roller bearing system the balls are the centripetal support as well as the rolling object. They are also made in a harder material then the bearing cages which they run on. Then is worn the rotor assembly looses its support and vibrates. That causes this noise, as well as having wheels rubbing against housings. The clearance in a ball bearing rotor should be no more then 10thous. If it feels like there is a “bit of play" then it is dead. Depending on how bad it is, it can still make power, how ever it will be substantially less then when it is good, it will also becomes noticeably laggier.

Obviously check for gaskets and what ever leaks and hopefully that is the cause.

im pretty sure its the turbo, but there is 2% chance it could be a split hose we could not get too.

A hose clamp was left off the intake pipe and it ingested a shiteload of debris, 2mm thick around inducer.

front wheel has a little play which is why i supsect turbo....

on this topic. what usually happens when a turbo finally dies from bearing falure? do wheels often fly off or do they just get real noisey and inefficient? my gt30's starting to make a bit of noise, kinda gay considering it only has 10k km's on it....

So many of these threads end up being manifold gasket or turbo manifold gasket leaks or split or leaking hoses that I would still be looking very carefully in this direction.

I had a tiny leak from external gate/exhaust gasket that whistled really slightly that I finally fixed recently.

The play in the turbo isn't a great sign but common things occur commonly.

All good. I'll change it when it shits itself :) lol

do a full throttle accel run next time its cold (one run when its cold wont hurt) see if noise changes pitch, if so it could be turbo to manifold leak. or listen for slight chug from turbo area with it idling cold..

Will do Trent. Got a freeway near my place so can test full throttle 3rd and see what happens. I'll let you know what happens

When we were at Winton for Nats, everytime you came up the spectator straight we were all like :huh: Wtffff is that? But without knowing what mods you had done I had no idea if it was meant to sound like that, lol

What will happen is that once the stock ECU sees more airflow than it expects it will add a heap of fuel and pull a heap of timing to be safe because it can't understand how it could get that much air without there being an issue. You will see clouds of black smoke and it won't pull hard through the midrange and top end. So, overall it will be a bit frustrating but should be OK. If you are still nervous set the base timing back 2o through the CAS, but it will be even more sluggish everywhere. As said above through...this is not my guarantee your engine won't be blown into a million pieces, leaving you looking for very hard to find parts A better idea is get a computer with logging ASAP, wire in a wide band O2 sensor and a use remote tuner. I've done multiple cars this way and while it is not as good as a specific tune on a dyno they can get it 90% right. I'd suggest if you can afford an R33 GTR these days you can afford an ECU and tune. And if you can't afford that you sure won't be able to afford the rebuild if it goes bad in the meantime,.
    • Yeah it would be nice if someone took the time to put that sort of information together, but there are a lot of variations in looms. I think you are making this way hard for yourself if you just want to get it running....sourcing an SR20 with the right wiring will be a billion times easier than matching the RB loom to an S15 chassis. If you do end up going this way, you just need to trace every wire in the loom with a multimeter, 95% of them will go to a location you can confirm at the ECU.....and then post it up for the next person who needs it
    • Just top it up with water, and keep a general idea of how much you added. It is normal for water to be pushed into and pulled out of the reservoir through the cap, and it should not be more than half full or it will be likely to overflow when hot. Any decent mechanic can do a pressure test of the cooling system to confirm if you have a leak. Keep in mind if it is only leaking a little and when hot it may well evaporate before you see it hit the ground
    • I'd ask the shop what they used and use that. Mixing coolants is sometimes OK, sometimes not, and you have know the details of each coolant to know whether it's a good idea or not.
    • Is it alright to top up with just another green coolant?
