Hey guys,

just wondering if anybody knows nsw road rules, but I recently got a new single turbo fitted to my 34GTR and i noticed that my car now has screemer pipes.

How illegal are they? and does anyone know how much the fine/defect is for getting caught? I like the sound they make but id rather not get a massive fine either.

Well I don't KNOW but I would assume it would be in te same category as no cat which I think is $5500 fine.... As screamers completely bypass all emissions hardware..... You sure it's not a split dump seems odd tht someone would install a screamer without at least letting you know ?!

Yeah im not too sure, it has 2 wastegates because its a twin scroll setup, but comming straight off the wastegates is two pipes about 40cm long that cutoff just under the engine..

Nice, i'd love to hear this thing on gate, it would be epic i'm sure.

Your in NSW, the worst state for EPA. Dont you guys have portable EPA detectors that sit on the side of the road, analyse the exhaust gas of your car, take a photo if its not correct and send you a nasty fine. Kind of like a speed camera? I've heard this before from several people.

Anyway, its quite a big no no, massive fines for it, attracts stacks of attention.

However, i'm one that is all for a screamer :)

First i have heard of these EPA detectors ? cant see how it would work, a police officer can report your car and it can be issued an attendance the EPA station that was the only way i knew of it happening?

I've heard of the road side epa, but I think it was only a trial.

And I'm pretty sure mainly aimed at trucks.

As for my opinion, not the biggest fan of screamers, give me a nice quiet exhaust any day.

I prefer the sound of the turbos on spool.....

Fkn seriously where do the idiots that believe this shit get their info from?

Facts are these; a screamer pipe is not legal in NSW. The entire car can be engineered but not ever a screamer pipe. Any policeman with a basic understanding of how an exhaust works in relation to turbo waste will know what to look for. For the fine either ring NSW Police force HWP, RTA or check RTA online they may have it.

Lol. Never heard of those "super exhaust sniffers".

Yes when i heard it the first time, i called bulls**t very quickly and didn't believe it, then i heard it from two other people. But still didn't understand how they could get it to work. Well you guys live in NSW so you'd know the deal. I just know that NSW rapes their drivers more than they do over here in SA.

It's entirely possible to implement roadside gas analysis. It works on infra-red absorption by the gas species that they are interested in. They just shine an infra-red beam across the area they want to monitor and if any gases of interest are present in the intervening air at levels above some level of interest, then the light will be absorbed at certain frequencies, leaving a lower transmission amount of those frequencies that can be compared against the intensity of some other frequency (to use as a baseline). A big enough dip in intensity triggers the alarm, summons to the EPA gets sent. It's not possible to make such a system accurate or precise enough to declare that the levels of CO or NOx or HC are at any given numerical level, and certainly not precise enough to make the detection limit equal to the actual legal limt. So they just set them up to detect really high levels to avoid false positives. The intention was really only to catch the absolute clunkers and those vehicles that had been stupidly modified (which probably accounts for a reasonable percentage of our cars if you interpret stupid them way that the EPA/cops would). I don't know if they are still using them anywhere, but they certainly trialled them here in SA for a while a couple of years ago. Ultimately, it's a lot of trouble to go to to catch a very small number of rotten cars and trucks.

Didn't realise there was a "scale" of such things :closedeyes:

People measure it in how much it will cost them :P

So in the worst case scenario, have a screamer pipe is Verrrrrrry illegal lol.

      I appreciate the detailed explanation, think I understand now. I spent the better part of last night reading what I could about shuffle and potential solutions. I had replaced the OEM twin turbo pipe with an alternate Y pipe that is separated further away from the turbo. The current one is from HKS and I had a previous pipe that was separated even further away, both have shuffle. I had heard that a divider can be welded in to the OEM pipe to remove turbulence, and figure that aftermarket pipes that are more separated would achieve the same thing. From what I read, most people with -10 turbos get shuffle due to their size, though it's a bit less common with -5s on a standard RB26. I think Nismoid mentioned somewhere it's because OEM recirculation piping is common in Australia with -5 cars. It seems that the recommendation tends to vary between a few options, which I've ordered in what I think is most feasible for me:  1. Retune the MAP or boost controller to try to eliminate shuffle 2. Install OEM recirculation piping 3. Something called a 'balance pipe' welded onto the exhaust manifolds. I don't know if kits for this are available, seems like pure fabrication work 4. simply go single turbo My current layout is as follows: Garrett 2860 -5s HKS Racing Suction intake MAF delete pipes HKS racing chamber intake piping hard intercooler piping,  ARC intercooler HKS SSQV BOV and pipe Haltech 2500 elite ECU and boost solenoid/controller HPI dump pipes OEM exhaust manifolds HKS VCAM step 1 and supporting head modifications Built 2.6 bottom end All OEM recirculation piping was removed, relevant areas sealed off I'll keep an eye out for any alternative solutions but can get started with this.  Only other question is, does shuffle harm the turbo (or anything else)? It seems like some people say your turbo shafts will explode because of the opposing forces after a while and others say they just live with it and adjust their pedal foot accordingly.

      That worked out PERFECTLY! Thank you big time to JJ. He was able to swap me his stock diff. He drove all the way to me as well. Killer! Removal & install was pretty straightforward. The diff itself is HEAVY. So that’s a 2 man job.  Man does the car drive nice now! Couldn’t have worked out any better 👌
