hey guys Im throwing this up just for discussion cause I have been wondering..

what if I was to ditch the normal intercooler and put a water to air intercooler where the stock airbox usually is, lets just say for now the pod is directly on the compressor housing, maybe with some tube directed cooler air to it..

a water to air cooler would easily fit in that space where the airbox usually is, there would be next to no intake pipework for good respnse and also more airflow to the radiator

im not real sure yet how well these coolers cool either. are they any better/worse than normal air coolers.

Im thinking the box type not the inline pipe style and a quick hunt around cheapbay

found some basic kits start at low prices so wouldnt be hard to slap one together for shnitzngiggles

has anyone tried it..

My Neighbour has a W2A on his Dato ute with sr20 response seems great and doesn't give cops to point you out while driving past other than that I don't know to much nut you do need a separate water pump

Well from a legal/Victorian point of view - You'd be defected in an instant.

Problem is one intake mod, meaning if you did - you'd have to rip the entire setup out just to get past!

I find that a bit stupid really as it's sits in engine bay not hanging out the front but the police and transport departments have weird views

i've been thinking about doing the same thing, but mounting in the corners (were the stock side mount intercooler is on a gtst) and the otherside of the car for a gtr (were the bov's are).

if you hide it good enough you might be able to fool a cop....... maybe.

I don't understand how a W2A will effect emissions it. Works the same as a A2A but shortens the piping

I think what R31N is saying is that ANY change to the intercooler is a defect in Vicistan. If you change from a stock side mount to a FMIC, then you have altered the inlet plumbing and you're no longer kosher.

My understanding is that A2A is better for sustained loads whereas W2A is more effective on a street car with short bursts of WOT. Sustained thrashing with W2A will eventually heatsoak the system and start doing more bad than good.

One intake mod is a joke. Not being able to mod our cars freely, and within certain limits(I'd say sound levels mainly and heavy toxins from the exhaust) is a joke. You can have a full built motor with massive turbo and run E85 and have emissions cleaner than most other standard petrol cars, but will be defected because you have a magical filter sitting infront of your turbo.

The thing with the water 2 air cooler is what happens when the water reaches a temperature higher than ambient? Won't that make it useless? Or is that effect voided out due to the better heat removing capacity of water over air? I think a front mount intercooler is the best way to cool your intake charge. Its at the front, low to the ground, has air directed into it and nothing infront of it.

Everything is a defect in Victoria, I think they have the most strictest rules on modding cars.

I thought water to air was just a workaround if you dont have space for air to air, so not necessary for a skyline.

We have a 1x Intake mod rule. Pretty self explainitory - you can only make ONE modification to the intake. If you had a normal A2A I/C, and an airbox. You'd be 100% legal. So for any R33 GTS-T owner, that is a FMIC given stock one is rubbish.

So when people put on Pods, yes it's a defect - BUT it's a very simple fix.

If you get pinned you have to:

1. Take the entire W2A setup out

2. Re-install stock airbox & I/C (cause both need to be present to be legal)

3. Clear defect

4. Re-install the lot

That is a hell of a lot of studding around for a street car.

Indeed it would fit that part easily... HOWEVER you'd still realistically need to mount a decent radiator for it into the front bar section, then mount the pumps, lines & storage. So it would still limit flow to the radiator somewhat with a W2A rad core @ the front.

Overall to setup W2A would be harder than A2A without a doubt, and obviously weigh more due to having the water weight.

Not disputing though that W2A would be better at cooling over A2A, no doubt about it.

It's just dependand on whether you can get the setup correct (i doubt a $400 ebay kit will work decently).

And then eat the hassle of a defect if you get pinned.

Side point flow to the raditor shouldn't be of a concern. 380rwkw GTRs with upgraded radiators & FMICs run acceptable temps on a 30 degree day. If you are having temperature issues then the first port of call would be a decent radiator & ducting.

Going W2A won't fix any overheating issues of the car cooling system (if you are trying to fix this?).

W2A cores are huge!

the small ones are only good for 300hp or so

would be the bare minimum for a stock 25 imo. and you will never fit it where the side mount was.

Trust me I tried

you may be able to fit it where the stock airbox goes, but you will have no room for an air filter/ intake pipe

I also tried that

leaving defects aside...lets pretend its a world full of flowers and fairy dust and they dont exsist..

there is no inherent problems with my car overheating or anything that I have discovered yet, 52mm radiator solved that..

In fact there is nothing wrong with my pieces of car except its in pieces.. :P

I was just thinking about it and wondered how well it would work..sure its probably not feasable or even worthwhile doin as Im already setup

but I'm very interested to know how well would or wouldn't it work..

    • I'm looking for some real world experiences/feed back from anyone who has personally ran a EFR7670 with a 1.05 exhaust housing or a .83 I'm leaning towards the .83 because its a street car used mostly for spirited driving in the canyons roads. I"m not looking for big numbers on paper. I want a responsive powerband that will be very linear to 8000 rpm. I dont mind if power remains somewhat flat but dont want power to drop off on top. The turbo I've purchased is a 1.05, although the mounting flange T3 vs T4 and internal vs external waste gates are different on both housings, I not concern about swapping parts or making fabrication mods to get what I want. Based on some of the research I've done with chat gpt, the 1.05 housing seems to be the way to go with slightly more lag and future proofing for more mods but recommends .83 for best response/street car setup. AI doesn't have the same emotions as real people driving a GTR so I think you guys will be able to give me better feed back 😀

    • This is where I share pain with you, @Duncan. The move to change so many cooling system pieces to plastic is a killer! Plastic end tanks and a few plastic hose flanges on my car's fail after so little time.  Curious about the need for a bigger rad, is that just for long sessions in the summer or because the car generally needs more cooling?
    • So, that is it! It is a pretty expensive process with the ATF costing 50-100 per 5 litres, and a mechanic will probably charge plenty because they don't want to do it. Still, considering how dirty my fluid was at 120,000klm I think it would be worth doing more like every 80,000 to keep the trans happy, they are very expensive to replace. The job is not that hard if you have the specialist tools so you can save a bit of money and do it yourself!
    • OK, onto filling. So I don't really have any pics, but will describe the process as best I can. The USDM workshop manual also covers it from TM-285 onwards. First, make sure the drain plug (17mm) is snug. Not too tight yet because it is coming off again. Note it does have a copper washer that you could replace or anneal (heat up with a blow torch) to seal nicely. Remove the fill plug, which has an inhex (I think it was 6mm but didn't check). Then, screw in the fill fitting, making sure it has a suitable o-ring (mine came without but I think it is meant to be supplied). It is important that you only screw it in hand tight. I didn't get a good pic of it, but the fill plug leads to a tube about 70mm long inside the transmission. This sets the factory level for fluid in the trans (above the join line for the pan!) and will take about 3l to fill. You then need to connect your fluid pump to the fitting via a hose, and pump in whatever amount of fluid you removed (maybe 3 litres, in my case 7 litres). If you put in more than 3l, it will spill out when you remove the fitting, so do quickly and with a drain pan underneath. Once you have pumped in the required amount of clean ATF, you start the engine and run it for 3 minutes to let the fluid circulate. Don't run it longer and if possible check the fluid temp is under 40oC (Ecutek shows Auto Trans Fluid temp now, or you could use an infrared temp gun on the bottom of the pan). The manual stresses the bit about fluid temperature because it expands when hot an might result in an underfil. So from here, the factory manual says to do the "spill and fill" again, and I did. That is, put an oil pan under the drain plug and undo it with a 17mm spanner, then watch your expensive fluid fall back out again, you should get about 3 litres.  Then, put the drain plug back in, pump 3 litres back in through the fill plug with the fitting and pump, disconnect the fill fitting and replace the fill plug, start the car and run for another 3 minutes (making sure the temp is still under 40oC). The manual then asks for a 3rd "spill and fill" just like above. I also did that and so had put 13l in by now.  This time they want you to keep the engine running and run the transmission through R and D (I hope the wheels are still off the ground!) for a while, and allow the trans temp to get to 40oC, then engine off. Finally, back under the car and undo the fill plug to let the overfill drain out; it will stop running when fluid is at the top of the levelling tube. According to the factory, that is job done! Post that, I reconnected the fill fitting and pumped in an extra 0.5l. AMS says 1.5l overfill is safe, but I started with less to see how it goes, I will add another 1.0 litres later if I'm still not happy with the hot shifts.
