Hello!

I dad a discussion with a few friends about turning my Stagea 260RS into RWD, and if there's any gains in doing so. The idea was to remove the forward drive shaft and the fuse, there would be no harm to the central locking clutch, so I don't want a debate whether it will damage anything or not.

Performance wise, it wouldn't become a clean RWD because of the front differential etc. But still, do I gain any performance just running it RWD? it only needs to run 2 wheels, so in my world it definately makes more power to the ground, power that the fwd normally consumes?

Let say a 100-200km/h (60-120mp/h) where the 4WD start don't matter, would I see a difference in performance here?

Please, enlighten and discuss!

It's not a constant 50/50 60/40 whatever split. Its not a evo!

Atessa works different. It's rwd most of the time, when the back slips then have torque transferred to the front.

Power loss, minimal.

Better still sell the 260 to someone worthy and buy a commodore...

Why do people like you exist on forums? is it so damn hard to stay on the topic? I had thoughts of writing something like this but thought that wasn't neccesary on SAU..: It's my f*cking vehicle, i do whatever the f*ck i want with it so please, dont tell me why I am an idiot for wanting a 260RS, but RWD.

Joking or not, it's irritating.

JoshM35; 100hp? you think I am one of those stupid persons who thinks that airfilters give's 5% more power? like "aah yeah i have this BMW M5 with 510HP, I added a sports air filter, it says it gives 10% power so now i have 561HP!!!!!! then i bought iridium spark plugs and they add another 5% overall power, so now it has 588HP. I also ordered a Supersprint exhaust-system, it adds 10% power to, so it will be doing 646HP! YEAH! not to mention Shell V-power which will add 5-10%! omfg! that's easily 700HP+++!!!!!!!???!!

Sigh..

Someone is an idiot. 260RS is RWD.

It just has a better system in place when shit gets hairy. How bout you buy a RWD stagea and sell your 260 to someone that appreciates it for what it is.

Yes the awd soaks up a few kw. In normal driving its not much as 95% of the effort goes to the rear wheels and 5% to the front.

For most people the small loss of kw is a small price to pay for the additional grip which offers better acceleration. Even a bog standard RB26 can spin the rears if in 2wd.

If you want to improve your 100 to 200 km/hr time you would be better to wind up the boost a little and get a good tune with an aftermarket ecu.

The answer to your question is... there is nothing to be gained.

Why is it a stupid question? why would I buy an S13? I appreciate the car and intend keeping it. What is your problem?

KiwiRS4T: Thanks, that's one answer I've waited for!

My car has N1 BB turbos, HKS Hardpipe kit, Mine's front pipe, Apexi PFC, larger intercooler/injectirs etcetc. It makes 420whp/492wnm at 1.4 bars, so it's far from stock. Next upgrades would be 2530 or 2860-7 turbos and Poncams, the rest supports at least 600 engine horsepowers.

Ok well since the loss attributed to the awd is a fixed number ( say15kw ) and not a percentage then the more power you have the less of a factor it becomes.

Sorry if I was irritating, but yeah it's been covered before.

I'm not an expert but in my opinion you'd have a different power delivery but no real power gains. Your still carrying the weight and as you stated the front wheels are still driving the front.

Others have seen improved fuel economy but with different awd systems.

A search turned up this guy http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/topic/69626-proof-of-difference-in-power-with-gtr-on-a-2wd-vs-4wd-dyno/page__p__1288143__hl__2wd+or+4wd+on+dyno__fromsearch__1#entry1288143 who says his car (GTR) gets 50kw more on a dyno in RWD. That sounds a bit high but thought I'd mention it.

There wouldn't be too many Stags in Sweden, would there?

far out there are a lot of bitches on here!!

i ran my M35 (yes different car, but same principal) without a front drive shaft for about 3 months.

it 'felt' lighter, and was a little more deliberate coming into corners, less understeer. and best of all, it was a little better on fuel!

there is always drivetrain power cost, so removing the front drive would probably make your car a little faster, but without the AWD grip - as already mentioned.

its a 10 min job to remove the front shaft, just do it. if you dont like it, put it back. simple :)

Or if you want to try it out you can just do this (I can confirm that it works on S1 as well as S2):

Locate the "air bleed" wire behind the drivers kick panel, it's a plug with a single wire either side (usually green socket, whiteplug).

In my S1 Stagea its a very small black plug taped to a loom with a single yellow wire with a green trace going to the plug and a single black wire going to the socket.

Disconnect it.

Start car. As key comes back to the ON position, within 10 seconds, depress brake pedal 5 times, 4WD light will start flashing to indicate you are in 2WD mode.

You need to do this every time you start the car.

To go back to 4WD mode, turn car off, reconnect plug and off you go.

Andif you plan to do this a lot you can put a switch in somewhere.

In the 260 it's a big green plug with two wires, near the bonnet release. Make sure it's a constant flash and not a solid as that's an error

    • You just need to remove the compressor housing, not the entire turbo. I would not be drilling and tapping anything with the housing still on anyways.
    • So, I put my boat on a boat. First of all, I'm going to come out and say it. Why is Tasmania not considered a holy goal, an apex that all road-legal modified cars go to, to experience? This place is an absolute wonderland of titanic proportions. If people are already getting club runs for once in a lifetime 30 person cruises to Tassy then I've never seemed to see it. It is like someone replaced the entire place with an idyllic wonderland for cars, and all of the people living there with paid actors who are kind, humble, and friendly. Dear god. After doing a lap of almost all of the place I've found that it's a great way to find out all of the little things that the car isn't doing quite right and a great way to figure it all out. All in all, I drove for 4 hours a day for a week and nothing broke. I didn't even need to open the engine bay. This is by all means a great success, but it has left me with a list of things to potentially address. I also now have a 3D printed wheel fitment tool which annoyingly hasn't got any threads in it to actually assemble it. I might be able to tape it together to check the sizing I actually want to use, but it'll likely involving pulling the shocks out to properly measure travel at least at the front, and probably raise the car while I'm at it, at least in the rear. I scraped on quite a few things and I'm not sure how else to go about it. I was taking anything with a bump at what felt like 89 degree angles. And address those 10 other tasks. And wash the car. God damn it is dirty. And somehow, the weather was perfect the entire time - And because I was on the top of Mt Wellington it turns out it was very much about to freeze up there. I did something I typically never do and took some photos up there in what must have been -10 and the foggy felt like suspended ice, rather than mere fog. If you own a car in Australia, you owe it to yourself to do it.
    • Damn that was hilarious, and a bit embarrassing for skylines in general 😂 vintage car life ey. That R33 really stomped. Pretty entertaining stuff
    • Hi, I have a r32 gtr transmission. Does any of you guys have an idea how much power it will hold with the billet center plate and stock gearset? At what power level and use did yours brake with or without billet plate? Thanks, Oystein Lovik
    • Saw this replica police car based on a Mitsubishi Starion XX parked next to a 'police box' (it's literally a box) in Hirohata, Himeji City in Hyogo prefecture the other day. It's owned by Morii-san who is a local Mitsubishi Starion enthusiast. According to a local radio station blog post, he always wanted to make a police car himself based on ones he saw in his favourite Manga comics.  As it's illegal to modify a car to look like a police car and drive on the road, Morii-san tried many times to get permission from Aboshi police station headquarters nearby. They refused initially by after they got tired of that they granted him permission. However, the car can only be displayed on private property and obviously can't be registered as long as the police livery is present. The car was completed at a cost of 1.5 million yen (US$ 10,000) in addition to the car cost. A location was chosen outside Hirohata Police box where the car can easily been seen from the street. Morii-san has two other Starion road cars, both widebody GSR-VRs.
