if i get my A/C degassed can i simply remove the condenser? or do i have to do more?

basically the A/C bearing was making heaps of noise, and since my cars a/c sucked balls anyway i decided to just cut the belt rather than spend monies to fix it. i can count on 1 hand the ammount of times i have ever used the a/c.

now i figure as it wont work, i might as well free up the airflow to the rad and around the motor.

im' not thinking about epic weight loss, and i'm not going to bother to remove the whole system, but i figure if i do it this way then i can put it back if i ever feel the need / sell the car

i got a whole ac system at home if u need bits joe..

Otherwise just let the gas out slowly and rip it all out..

Not only does it make it easier to work on your engine but the weight savings are epic ;)

The fines for letting it out are big I hear.

Make sure you seal the pipes off so shit doesnt get in cause if not your kill a/c compressor should you decide to re-instate the unit.

You obviously live in melbourne or you'd need it! thumbsup.gif

so if i have an accident and my ac gas spews out everywhere do i get fined for that ?

You drive a skyline? You'll get fined no matter what. Someone hitting you, gas spewing out..... But on a serious note, no, as it's un-avoidable....

On topic, yes. Get the system de-gassed and start un-bolting! Make sure you use rubber bungs to close off any open pipes that are exposed as crap will get in them and bugger the whole show if you decide to use it again. Also, if you don't run the compressor every now and again, the seals dry out or something and can leak when the system's re-gassed.....

just crack the hose and let it out slowly. its highly unlikely anyone would notice it just makes a small hissing sound. if it starts squirting out liquids just tighten up the nut until it is just gas again. its not really any different to having a leak. im not sure if its harmful to us or not but simply dont stand over the top of it go to the other side of the car and start getting ready to remove the resy. im not 100% sure on this but you might have to remove the radiator to get the condensor out. then block the hoses and tie them them up so they arent flopping around in front of your radiator.

its all lies..the reason the fun police dont want you breathing the gas in is because it gives an amazing feeling of euphoria and allows you to reach a higher consiousness where not only can you explore the possibilties of the human mind but you can make them a reality..if your lucky u may even meet a unicorn or pink elephant

Now that you know the truth be a man and suck that gas straight outta the system :P

It is unroadworthy as mentioned above due to needing A/C for front screen demister. So keep that in mind. Other then that just vent it outside or in garage with door open. Usual OH&S shit. Don't inhale or get your eyes blasted.

isn't it only a legality to have a heater?

i'm not removing the whole system cos i want to be able to put it back one day.

It isn't a roadworthy issue as only the heater needs to work to demist the windscreen, thus so many older cars never being fitted with A/C in the first place. If the demister doesn't work without the A/C in a car that had one, then it would be a problem....

I had a quick look on Vicroads site and Found:

"Where optional and non essential equipment is fitted such as air conditioning, rear window demisters, etc, it is not necessary for it to work providing it does not adversely affect the safety of the vehicle or its compliance with mandatory Standards for Registration."

No mention of needing a demister or heater of any kind.

You even need Demisters for CAMS

Looks like myself and my foreman are wrong  . He has had us checking all cars rear demisters and A/C for RWC. I Can look through the RWC regulation books at work to see what they say as they are way more detailed then Vicroads.

its a $33,000 dollar fine or $165,000 if u have a buisness and arctic

services who control this travel forums and other sites looking for this type of

stuff.if its r134a gas u are realeasing takes 15years to realease from the

atmosphere if its an older system and takes r12 (pre 1993) the gas hangs around

for 100 years which is why they no longer use it,also if it is a r12 system u

will not be able to refit it later down the track u will have to have it retro

fitted.if u get sumone out just to recover the gas theres a good chance they

wont charge u for it cause they will get $3-$5 dollars per kg they recover.the oil in the system is hygroscopic and will give u freeze burns (frost bite)if it contacts ur skin as it absorbs heat if its a mineral oil.just a heads up

    • Well, this is probably where a wiring diagram and a multimeter come into play.
    • I can say to anyone thats doing this; having done a number of R clusters; just be careful if its an unknown cluster.  It takes a bit of force to pull up; but if it feels excessive then its probably stuck. I've had this and pulled the entire hair spring out; and I can tell you; its not easy getting the correct spring replacement with the correct inner diameter and winding. In my case someone had used some sort of adhesive to stick it to the spindle and it pulled the whole spindle out; which the force seperated the hairspring from the spindal and caused it to deform.  You may have to clean it (IPA); or in my case if i'd known i should have used some sort of solvent on it.  Also check out Cruizin Central on eBay. He does all sorts of dials; and you can email him with any custom designs you want. So if you want like certain logos etc...he'll send you a mock of what it will look like then you accept the order and he'll take care of the rest. Fantastic dials and he can do basically any design you want.
    • Have you confirmed its the actual axles? Also the wheel bearings that mount on the hubs to hold the axles wear out. I replaced mine as they got play in them. It sorted my play issue.
    • Ive converted a few clusters for the R33 with 320km/h dials. On the back there are some pads which can be bridged or unbridged (using solder or wick braid) to calibrate it. There is one bridge which is for MPH <> KPH; and there are combinations of bridges to offset it. There is probably a diagram  For example; this is my conversion for a 180km/h dial to a 320km/h dial (I put custom GT-R dials on it with the GTS25t layout) If you have J2 soldered (assuming the S clusters have a similar config to the R clusters); you may need to remove that solder
    • Back on topic 😉, these are some of the notable pages from the booklets that are supplied with each weekly parts update. I never knew the BNR32 test mule car had an S13 Silvia front end... *Edit: On closer inspection the test car still had the R32 body, but only the front end had Silvia panels etc.
