There is no "safe" boost level. An SMIC will heatsoak faster than an FMIC due to the small surface area, so i'd say even on standard boost you'd be getting good heatsoak on a hot day. Save up for an FMIC man.

Exactly - there is no set boost figure... End of the day the stock SMIC is rubbish.

Without a proper ECU & tune, there is little point increasing boost as most ECU's hit the age old "rich/retard" mode when you increase boost to anywhere from 9-11psi. Some cars it kicks in at 8psi for example. It's just luck of the draw.

A good tune will do more wonders for the car than just upping the boost and having the stock ECU shit itself.

i would be more worried about the turbo then then induction, Altough my mates Rb30det with 240,000km on it was hammered for years with a manual boost controller at around 12-14psi and no dramas,

Correct me if im wrong, But thoes old holden rb30det VK's didnet even have a side mount?

The overall point is this. On the standard turbo and standard management, there is no boost limit resulting from the SMIC being too small. The management gets in the way of progress before the SMIC does. With a tuneable ECU, you can probably still run the standard turbo up to the sensible maximum with the SMIC anyway. That's in the order of 12 psi, and results from the increased risk of death of the ceramic turbine above that boost, and also the fact that you will be getting close to the max on the injectors also. On a street car just being driven around normally (pont, squirt, hide from the cops) you'd probably not even notice that the SMIC was a bit undersized. Extensively thrash it through the hills or give it a dyno session and you'd probably end up having to tune it richer and with less timing.

If you go past all of that onto a different turbo/injectors etc, then you'd be foolish not to put a FMIC on it. Having said that, a decent FMIC is really one of the earliest mods that could/should be done. Reduces pressure drop, makes more cool, which takes the load off the turbo and the exhaust temps and so on and so forth.

Question is, how cold can you keep it? imagine that SMIC covered in dry ice, then hey run as much as you want through it.

On that note, many 1.8T Audi boys use their stock sidemount and ram 1bar boost through it using remaps, they seem to be all running fine.

As far as reports from R34 SMIC users go, 200-220kw seems the max you can get from a R34 factory sidemount. The upper limit of 240kw with a ARC sidemount. But there is no escaping heatsoak on a SMIC, hotter the air the less power you make.

I think you'll find a 1.8T turbo @ 14psi will probably be flowing as much as a RB25DET turbo does at maybe 5-6psi

Not just about pressure, it's also the airflow restriction and the ability to cool the air being sent

Id like to see any smic not get heat soaked at those powers with consective power runs or working the car hard for several minutes. They might work for giving a single squirt every once in a while thats it.

the smic is rubbish for anything over standard boost

if you increase boost, change the intercooler core, simple

forget about 200-220rwkw is fine on standard SMIC

its not and its ass. its been done to death. find the thread about 4years when rekin tried to keep the SMIC on his 32 and use the 34 SMIC

it was ass, we all said it was ass and it was ass. a new FMIC should be around $600 installed ish anyhoo so you would be mad not too

    • You just need to remove the compressor housing, not the entire turbo. I would not be drilling and tapping anything with the housing still on anyways.
    • So, I put my boat on a boat. First of all, I'm going to come out and say it. Why is Tasmania not considered a holy goal, an apex that all road-legal modified cars go to, to experience? This place is an absolute wonderland of titanic proportions. If people are already getting club runs for once in a lifetime 30 person cruises to Tassy then I've never seemed to see it. It is like someone replaced the entire place with an idyllic wonderland for cars, and all of the people living there with paid actors who are kind, humble, and friendly. Dear god. After doing a lap of almost all of the place I've found that it's a great way to find out all of the little things that the car isn't doing quite right and a great way to figure it all out. All in all, I drove for 4 hours a day for a week and nothing broke. I didn't even need to open the engine bay. This is by all means a great success, but it has left me with a list of things to potentially address. I also now have a 3D printed wheel fitment tool which annoyingly hasn't got any threads in it to actually assemble it. I might be able to tape it together to check the sizing I actually want to use, but it'll likely involving pulling the shocks out to properly measure travel at least at the front, and probably raise the car while I'm at it, at least in the rear. I scraped on quite a few things and I'm not sure how else to go about it. I was taking anything with a bump at what felt like 89 degree angles. And address those 10 other tasks. And wash the car. God damn it is dirty. And somehow, the weather was perfect the entire time - And because I was on the top of Mt Wellington it turns out it was very much about to freeze up there. I did something I typically never do and took some photos up there in what must have been -10 and the foggy felt like suspended ice, rather than mere fog. If you own a car in Australia, you owe it to yourself to do it.
    • Damn that was hilarious, and a bit embarrassing for skylines in general 😂 vintage car life ey. That R33 really stomped. Pretty entertaining stuff
    • Hi, I have a r32 gtr transmission. Does any of you guys have an idea how much power it will hold with the billet center plate and stock gearset? At what power level and use did yours brake with or without billet plate? Thanks, Oystein Lovik
    • Saw this replica police car based on a Mitsubishi Starion XX parked next to a 'police box' (it's literally a box) in Hirohata, Himeji City in Hyogo prefecture the other day. It's owned by Morii-san who is a local Mitsubishi Starion enthusiast. According to a local radio station blog post, he always wanted to make a police car himself based on ones he saw in his favourite Manga comics.  As it's illegal to modify a car to look like a police car and drive on the road, Morii-san tried many times to get permission from Aboshi police station headquarters nearby. They refused initially by after they got tired of that they granted him permission. However, the car can only be displayed on private property and obviously can't be registered as long as the police livery is present. The car was completed at a cost of 1.5 million yen (US$ 10,000) in addition to the car cost. A location was chosen outside Hirohata Police box where the car can easily been seen from the street. Morii-san has two other Starion road cars, both widebody GSR-VRs.
