Hey guys, so I've got a R34 GT-T and i just got defected a little while ago for a bunch of things which ive fixed up. but i also got defected for having a pod filter that wasn't enclosed, apparently its a fire hazard or whatever..

anyways so ive put the old stock box back in and cleared all the defects and my car is good to go now. but the issue is i was just so used to driving a car that had some sort of blow off/turbo sound. now i dont hear a thing.

I dont want to just simply put the pod back on because any cop can see that and defect it easily.

is there anything i could do to get the turbo sound back? i was considering leaving the stock airbox there but not connected, and connecting the pod filter under somewhere and hiding it away, but that seems too much of a headache to do.

so yeah, pretty much i want the sound back but i want to be able to get away with it without being defect by most cops, i dont mind it being defectable, i just want it to be shifty or hidden or anything like that.

any ideas guys?

The pod filter really makes the induction and associated blow of sounds much much louder and meatier. What you've been hearing so far. Theres not much you can do except for fitting an aftermarket BOV or adjusting your current one which will make the lift of pssstt sound, but you wont hear any extra noise otherwise.

You can fit a speaker system which mimicks the turbo. They have systems for both outside and inside the cabin noise. Do you want more do you want others to hear it? These are really dumb thought unless your doing it as a joke. Personally I would leave it the way it is now.

I'm not sure if the 34 is the same as the 33 but, if there is a soft pillow thing in the lid of the airbox, pull it out.

You will hear a bit more turbo spool and maybe some more Bov. Do you have a factory Bov? They are pretty quiet.

Also a silicon intake pipe or better yet a metal intake pipe will change the sounds again.

I have done all of these and currently have No pillow, GTR Bov and a metal intake pipe made by scotty nm35.

Spool noise is there but Bov doesn't even really make the same noise as before. Due to Scotty's design, I actually get a little bit of flutter as the Bov releases straight into the turbo blades rather than the sidewall of the stock or silicon pipes.

Why would'nt you just put the pod in an enclosure - keeps the sound and gets the cops off your back.

facing same problem.... its illegal to not have a pod filter enclosed but having one in itself is not illegal as far as I know

Just get an enclosure like the one suggested above...

Im going to fit a blitz turnflow intercooler this friday

does anyone know if any mods will need to be made to the above enclosures to attach this to cover the pod?

seems like making a box for it is the best way to go. however, i remember the cop told me that the box must enclose the pod completely, that is from underneath, ontop and the sides with only one hole for the air to leave.

so the pod covers linked above would still be defectable then im guessing?

it seems like they just want the stock airbox look but with a pod filter inside it..

Stock airbox, hiflow panel fitler, metal intake pipe. That will give you loud induction sound. The BOV sound is reduced, I don't really notice it at all unless I was am accelerating hard on full boost, but that doesn't worry me too much.

ill confirm it for you, im 100% on this, i looked into it a fair bit. it has to be completely enclosed to avoid a fire hazard because the pod filter is made of paper after all. to avoid the paper catching on fire it needs to be completely enclosed.

i really dont get the point of those half assed covers on justjap and ebay that only cover the top of it.

so does this mean if you have the stock air setup with a metal intake pipe, the induction sound will remain?

I had a look a while back and could not find a metal intake Pipe for a GTT that will connect to a stock airbox, all the ones I found were for POD filters.. Might have another look around maybe someone had made one now..

What got done for me was just a straight piece of pipe with the ends still silicone joiner, like http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NISSAN-SKYLINE-R32-HNR32-HCR32-GTS-RB20DET-TURBO-SILICONE-INTAKE-INDUCTION-HOSE-/251199737738?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a7cabcf8a&_uhb=1#ht_1660wt_923 , basically just using the curve at the top and the intakes for the BOV and the oil breather hole section to connect onto the front of the turbo.

By using the bare minimum we were able to get a metal intake that won't suck shut and just enough silicone to connect up to the stock airbox, so far it's been fine even after the new tune that is 242rwkw. Sometimes just gotta think about a slightly less obvious solution.

    • My dream is also to have a proper hoist, but I don't think it will ever happen. My quickjack is probably as close as I'll ever get, it really is very good though. 
    • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
    • BTW I measured the jack I have, it is 70mm at the saddle but you only have about 700 until it returns to 150mm high at the cylinder so it is good but no magic bullet.
    • My experience with Rising Sun Exports Before agreeing to the sale I tried to do as much research as I could (obviously), his Facebook reviews are 98% and he goes Live at least once or twice a week. I contacted 2 people in the UK who had used him for their imports, both had positive feedback. His explanation and talk through of the import process was thorough, answering any query no matter how stupid it was. It felt as soon as the money was sent, communication dropped off. I asked for shipping updates every 2 weeks or so, not wanting to pester him, he never had any updates. I wasn't informed the car had been dropped off at the port, I only found out by his Facebook story. I asked for the photos taken at the port, knowing he would need some for insurance purposes. I received a few 5 second clips and that's it. When asked again, he said his staff had them. Weeks later I asked again, he tells me he doesn't have any, but does have 50 photos from the original advert. I never received them. I eventually got the documents sent via WhatsApp after I mentioned the port was requesting them. I purchased a CarVX report, to find out the vehicle is a Grade R with recorded accident damage, first recorded in 2017 when it was first auctioned. He never told me the grade, then again I didn't ask. His response was "Grade R means nothing, it wasn't chassis damage". Still, I would have liked to have been informed about it. Jon prides himself on being open and honest when it comes to inspecting cars, it's his main job doing so at the auctions for customers. When the vehicle arrived in the UK I noticed a few little cosmetic issues. It's a 21 year old car so it wasn't going to be mint condition. The side skirts are cracked on each corner and the sealant is failing. The front grill on the bonnet/hood isn't secured very well, mounting studs are missing. Both minor things, but again, it would have been nice to be told. During a Facebook Live walk around video of the vehicle, he mentioned it has a front Whiteline anti roll bar/sway bar. While on the inspection ramp, I noticed the stock item has been installed. When first questioned, his response was "the ARB? Switched? Since when, it never had them". Since sending video and photo evidence I've not received a response. I'm probably being over critical of the overall condition of an old car, but all I wanted was honesty (which he claims to have). I'm aware I wasn't his only customer, he's busy doing XYZ but other reviews praise him for great communication with regular updates and photos, I felt I didn't receive the same treatment.
