Hey Hey All,

I'm selling my Stag and over the years selling other cars I am gobsmacked at the shit people say and do to try and get a price reduction, It infuriates me so much I'm keen to hear what other amazing shit others have listened to.

So far this year I have heard:

Geez there are a few nicks on the door - It's 10 years old mate if you want a new car buy a new car

The car has a slight squeak that will cost a grand to fix - on what planet!

Will you take half the asking price - Why yes of course I will and the other half on pick up

If I pay cash will you knock $5k off - No I wont

Can I do burnout to test the power - Umm No, but good luck it's 4WD

It's a shame the leather isnt brand new - Car is 10 years old what did you expect

It doesnt have the Japanese Sat nav - Well we are in Sydney and I know where I am going

It's got so much more lag than a Legnum - Buy a legnum then

Will you sell me the roof racks, cargo blind and cargo net as I like another stagea that doesnt have them - Yes I will $14,500 the lot. .

So tell me what you have heard. .

Even though both were clearly printed in the Trading Post ad for my 180B SSS;

"Errr, I don't like the colour" (A $4000 Gunmetal Grey paintjob) Well don't buy it. "So you won't reduce the price?" No.

"Errr, I didn't know it had a Rollcage" Well, I told you over the phone when you specifically asked about it.

"Will you take it out?" Well, it's a 6 point CrMo weld in cage, so; no.

"Errr it's a bit noisy" Well that's because it has a 2.4 litre stoker L20 motor in it. "You mean it's modified? I wanted to buy a stock one". Get out. Now.

When i sold my sigma GSR/starion engine which it had,all i got was "if u take the stereo out and other parts will u drop the price".

But my favourite is"umm, ive seen these go for like $3000 and you want $7000"Well ive spent alone $10000 in parts and all that,so why u looking at mine if you found ones more then half the amount less then mine.

On the same car, "Can my mate take it for a drive for a couple of hours (without you); that way we can work out if it's any good?"

For sure; pay full price, and you never have to bring it back. Maybe you'd like my credit cards too?

Dickheads.

Or an ET Turbo Pulsar I was selling;

"Will you just sell me the turbo?" Yep; $8000, comes with a car wrapped around it.

"But I don't want the car, just the turbo" Well maybe you should looking in the "wrecking" section, not the "Cars for sale" section...

"You're a dickhead mate!" Yes, yes; I'm the dickhead....

Dickheads...

Sight unseen on the Pulsar;

"I'll give you 2 grand for it" - Well, it's advertised for $8000 and you haven't even looked at it, so I'm going with no.

"2 grand CASH" - Oh well that changes everything; yeah, definitely and I'll throw in my new Commodore Ute too!

"Really?" No dickhead.

Dickheads.

Bikes, however; are another matter.

Every bike I've sold, has been to the first person to look, and for the price I've asked.

Usually on the first day.

I wish I was that lucky. Trying to sell my bike right now. Already tge cheapest on tge market with tge lowest ks and in good condition. First dicks head to call goes ill give you half what your asking. Good one dicks head no

Usually on the first day.

Just do what I do....start raising the price with every stupid comment.

They will soon get the idea.....just let em know straight up that you don't deal.

Unless BJs are involved..........

Lol!

Some great ones in there Dale.

The thing that shits me the most these days is that people don't even bother to call you to organise to come & even look at the car - they'll just send a text with a ridiculous lowball offer in the hope that you're a desperate heroin addict willing to throw the car away for next to nothing

Or you get a call with "give your best / bottom price".

Always seems to be the same accent. Even got that from a girl once....

^^^

This....and you have seen first hand how tolerant I am.

lol, i sell cars for a living, i could fill this thread.

could also fill it with awesome retorts i have stored in my head for quick fire response....love my job :P

the best part which you dont get to play with on the private market is dealing with peoples tradein values. always fun to be had there.

i have recently had a customer give me his price needed to trade in his vehicle, then proceeded to watch me silently search his car for a few minuets, then asked me what are you doing? i replied im just looking for the other ford focus hidden in this one that i wasnt seeing.... he didnt laugh....i did.

I never understand why people trade stuff in, they always get ripped massively when if they just sold there car privately they would prob get almost double what a dealer offered them.

I dont know why people also think paying cash is going to change anything, bank cheque or cash its the same thing, doesnt change the price of the car.

I had one dickhead look at my 32, told me it wasn't as clean as he thought it would be blah blah blah, offered me 5k or a swap for his hr31 passage which funnily enough he had advertsied for 8k.

I think the biggest mistake people make is advertising cars on forums, every low ball offer I've had selling stuff generally comes from forum members.

My wife and I have an Art Gallery. She is the artist and I am the BS artist.

When someone asks "what is your best price?" I always add a couple of grand. That shuts them up.

Im changing the price now Craig, if it works I owe you a slab of beer. .

What a great laugh reading this thread, I thought I was the only one that cracked the shits!

The R33 I owned and sold:

People called up constantly querying; what's it do 1/4 mile? how many kw does it pull on the dyno? can it out run a gtr? does it lose traction easily?

The Stagea I am currently selling:

I noticed you have an aftermarket stereo in it, do you still have the factory japanese stereo to supply with the sale?

I am looking at upgrading to a bigger family wagon as I need the space but I want it to be economical with fuel? go buy a friggin getz!

Many many more, could sit here the whole night trying to remember all the sillies....

    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
    • No those pads are DBA too  but they have colors too. I look at the and imo the green "street" are the best.
    • I’m not sure what happened I told them about sonic tunes free OTS tune and the next the I know .. I was booted..   To funny
    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
    • I'm not going to recommend an EBC pad. I don't like them. Just about anything else would suit me better. I've been using Intima pads for a while now.
