Hey guys im having trouble with my s13 rb20 missing it has

New plugs

New leads

New au coilpack

Hiflow 33 turbo

Full exhaust

Xr6t intercooler

Walbro pump

Stock 32 auto ecu

The car starts and idles but it misses all through the rev range, sometimes bad enough to stop it revving.

All the plugs look like theyre burning the same (0.8mm gap) and it blows a small amount of fuel out the exhaust. Ive tried changing the leads around incase the firing order was out, and also dissconnected the afm to try see a change and there was no benefit. Cas timing is on the stock mark, and ive checked the coilpack wiring with the r31 clubs guide.

Im kinda stumped as to what it could be, any other ideas

Yes its auto....

And cyifly thats exactly it. Its able to rev right up like 4 5krpm at part throttle but almost instantly stops at wot.

Ill check the afm today, i think theyre different to gtr afms though. I pulled apart my gfs 33 gtst afm to find they are completely different internally, and i suspect rb20 25 afms are the same

  • 1 month later...

Hey guys, reviving this old thread.

The issue still hasnt been resolved, but my last piece of the ignition system seems to be either ignitor or cas. Anyhow ive been trying to source another rb20 ignitor without success. Gumtree, wreckers etc

Has anyone converted their rb20 to run another style ignitor?

Rb25, vg30de, or something else?

This issue is really giving me the shets, i cant drive this thing and i need to do some shed skids

You'd be far better off doing as zebra says. Why anyone would install a 3 coil wasted spark setup onto an RB is beyond me. The smart money is on getting a set of known good stock coils (probably impossible for an RB20) or stumping up for a set of Splitfires. If you really, really wanted to modernise it, you could buy some (Splitfire) coils to suit a later RB25 that have built in igniters. You'd need a coil loom to suit, and have to do some rewiring at the point where the old igniter was between the ECU loom and the coil loom, but that's not likely to be hard if you've already dived deeply enough into this wiring to bodge in AU coils.

What dwell do the au coils need? If you don't give them the right dwell it will miss. I put ls coils in my car. On stock dwell it would miss under high load, sort out the dwell an unsurprisingly the miss is fixed.

RB20 Missing....

Where did it go? Have you found it? Who stole it? Did the rb30's bully it so it packed up and went home? How can you loose a 150kg engine? it's not like it's a set of keys... oor are you a giant? You probably are, and use an rb20 as a key chain... that great.

Well I hope you find you rb20 soon.

J.

Mine was missing for ages, I got it on the dyno and checked the AFR, it was extremely low. The mechanic replaced the fuel pump and bingo AFR went up to 14/15 and miss went away. Check out the fuel pump.

    • Here's the chart for fuel pressure vs. current draw, assuming your base fuel pressure is 3 bar and you run like 0.5bar boost on WOT, you should only momentarily hit 9amps here and there. (Ignore my prev post, I cannot read a chart these days it seems)
    • Those comp test results are not hideous. Whether they are accurate or not (ie, when that comp tester says 140 psi, is the real pressure120, 140 or 160?) is unknown to us. The state of the battery used to crank it over is unknown, etc etc. Many people around here would say that the absolute values and the spread are perfectly fine to just add boost and keep going. I personally would be happier with a narrower spread than that, but even the diff between 125 and 145 is not terrible. That one cylinder at 125 though, has probably copped some damage relative to the others. You should inspect the valves seeing as you've got it open. Do you know how to measure installed ring gaps? That, and an inspection of the rings themselves, is how you will determine whether they need to be replaced. If you're not good to do these things, take the block and the pistons and rings to a shop that is, and ask them for the go/no-go on them. Do the bores need a hone at all? If so, you might well be justified in getting some different pistons in order to get away from the ring supply problem. Whether you're happy to spend a lot more money right now, on more gear, rather than less money, but an amount that looks stupid given that you will only get a handful of rings in exchange for that money, is for you to decide.

    • Ok so i would love some advice here please, i purchased an R33 a few months back and its had a few mods done to the engine, its an RB25det running a Master ECU, 1200cc injectors, bigger turbo, oil cooler, oil filter relocation kit, Spool H-beam rods, acl/ross pistons. When i removed the motor from the vehicle (as its getting a respray) i thought i would compression test it and these are the following results. Cylinder 1-145psi, Cylinder 2-143psi, Cylinder 3-125psi, Cylinder 4-145psi, Cylinder 5-140psi, Cylinder 6-135psi this test was done with the motor on the ground and powering up the starter motor. I dropped the sump and found broken oil squirters on cylinder 3,5 and 6. I was told my rings are probably worn so i stripped the motor completely to get a new set of rings for it. The trouble is no one has these rings anywhere and they have to be custom made by Ross over in the states and will cost about $600+$200 delivery. My question is how can i tell if my rings are at fault and if they are still ok and is this price ok for a set of rings?
