Hi all.

Newbie to this forum and Nissans in general... But I'll get there :) And I've tried searching already for this topic but can't find exact matches or relevant info.

I have a heavily customised Z31 300zx that's using R33 running gear and brakes with a VH45 turbo motor. During race wars in perth I've damaged the 3-4 synchro and the thrust bearing is on the way out. From what I've read here they seem like the normal things that let go.

I'm looking into doing more mods with the car, so instead of replacing new for oem I'd like to replace them with stronger & better parts if available.

So far I've replaced the clutch master cylinder, braided line to slave, new standard slave and redline fluid.

Questions

- is there a good online breakdown of a fs5w70c ?

- can anyone recommend the os giken gear sets? I've used their stuff before but never gear sets.

- is there anything I'm missing when upgrading the gb?

- and also if anyone knows of well priced sellers for things like the synchro's

Thanks in advance

1). I think it would help you if you downloaded Nissan FAST (the genuine parts catolouge). That way you can look up the whole gearbox including the clutch mechanism and a lot more and also get part numbers.

2). I wouldnt know anything about the strength of it, but being OS GIKEN im sure its well suited and expensive. Lots of people just use stock boxes. I work for Nissan and the 3rd and 4th syncro hub and gear are no longer available they have superceded to a different assembly, you must change out about 15 parts all at once to fit it but they fix the weaker 3-4 setup.

3).Make sure you get a nismo pivot ball so you dont snap your old one or you will have to pull the box out to change it. Unexpectedly the relase bearing carrier snapped on my car and the bearing pushed diagonally on the clutch fingers and ruined the clutch i ended up having to get a new clutch so i did everything, the new carrier and fork and retainer springs aswell and the master and slave cylinder so i didnt have to pull it out again.

4). use genuine syncros, all gearbox shops only recommend the genuine nissan ones

os gieken are rubbish, brockas when he had his R33 broke a fair few of them, gav beer also broke a few os gieken sets in his R32 GTR both around the 550 - 650 whp range

you can look at a PPG gear set (speak to josh at galvsport he was looking to becomming a WA distributor)

for my build i have gone with the getrag 6 speed for a bit more confidence in handling 600+ whp, if that fails i will bite the bullet and go PPG.

PAR gearsets are rubbish from all reviews

a few people just stockpile R33 gearboxes and replace as required - may be an option depending on your pocket depth for shelling out on a PPG

Cool cool thanks for the replies and for the info, really helpful. Realised tonight it isn't a gts-t box it's a propper GTR box so does this change anything?

I'm going to pull the box out next weekend and have a look at the clutch, send it off to get rebuilt and get the pressure plate and flywheel machined.

I'm hoping it's as simple as that... Does the GTR box share the same problems???

Centeral coast - thanks man, appreciated. Os there any truth behind the R33 GTR box running triple synchromesh's?

Mr stabby - 6-650 rhp

Hattori - thanks man, yeah I had a rebuilt R154 with all the marlin Crawley upgrades that I'm kinda wishing I didn't sell now... Meh.

Thanks guys appreciate the input

Gears are pretty strong in them, synchos and selectors are the first to go.

Some guys replace the selectors with PPG items but at $500 a pop it is exxy and on the off chance you strip a gear after that you would kick yourself.

I just keep putting stock boxes in, once I start hearing weird noises I go looking for another one :)

See that's where this discussion always gets fun :)

I know 3 people who've made that power (and more) and have no issues with them at all and haven't for years...

lets not turn this inot a shit fight, i just stated 2 examples of them failing, from the facts provided to me prior to making the decision for my own car.

I don't agree they are "rubbish" when other people have not had any issues at all and they are making the same if not more power.

Not turning into a shit fight, just totally disagree with the statement made.

Wtf happened to my post??? Lol

Anyway, so does the gtr box run triple syncros?

And I should have a look at upgrading the selectors. I will use ppg they seem to handle whats thrown at them.

Anyone know of a seller for syncros?

BUT, did they have the centre plate? I know Gav didn't! I was talking to Gav about this issue at WTAC last year. I'm sure he was told somewhere along the way to use the billet centre plate. The standard one may aswell be made from a dinner plate. It's crap!

I've had my OS set in the car for coming on 5 years. Ain't busted yet!

As has been mentioned os boxes are strong if used in conjunction with the sammich plate. Ppg is a proven performer as is modena and holinger. I have heard good things on the auto yokohama boxes too but never seen or driven one. As for par. Id love to meet Gerrard so I can set him on fire and then put him out with a pushbike chain.

Man how shit is the online parts catalogue??? If its anything to go by the one ive found.... toyodiy is much better. Does anyone have a better version?

How do ppl here running the ppg set think if the noise? I know straight cut is stronger but damn I couldn't handle that on a daily...

  • 2 weeks later...

Ok so I've sent off a for a quote on a long kit with synchros and rear bearing retainer for a FS5W70C gearbox.

Also noted to buy a Nismo pivot ball, has anyone here bought one or has a seller that they can recommend to me?

I figure ill run the box to the edge and when it gives me grief ill pull it out and stick either a T56 magnum in or a Hollinger ;)

    • Just trying to get my head around this. At 5psi of boost, you turn on your wmi pump, and then you're using a 3000cc injector, to allow flow upto the actual engine, where you have your 6x200cc injectors and a 500cc injector. If the above is correct, what advantage are you obtaining by having the 3000cc injector blocking flow, is this just incase a line breaks between that injector and the motor you can stop flow immediately? Or are the 6x200cc and 500cc less injectors and just spray nozzle?
    • Welcome! New member myself, but I had an R33 back in 2002. Best advice I could give, based on my experience: if you're running the factory turbo, be very conservative with boost. I made the mistake of just fiddling around with the boost controller and cranking the boost for fun, and the end result was my intake pipes popping off frequently from the constant deluge of oil that was being blown into the recirc by the stressed-out turbo, which itself was siphoning oil from the engine and farting it out both sides of its centre bearing (or something to that effect). If I could do it all again, I would have gotten a new turbo and had a tune dialled in professionally and then just left it alone! Funny you mention the metal shavings in the gearbox, as I had the same thing - the probe plug (magnetic drain plug, essentially) would come out caked with shavings. At least it was doing its job. Not sure if that's just sacrificial wear and part of the deal, or if my gearbox was shagged, but I wasn't abusing it. Enjoy the R33 - they're a dying breed, and if they weren't $35k+ on CarSales in Queensland, I might have picked up one of those again, instead of the 370GT I own now (though I'm loving the 370GT, that big 3.7L V6 just hits different).
    • Howdy folks. I owned an R33 back in 2002, which was thoroughly beyond my capacity (financially speaking) to maintain/insure, so we parted ways in 2004. Fast forward 21 years (to literally yesterday, in fact) and I'm now the proud owner of a 2007 V36 370GT. I'm happily surprised by how much power the VQ37VHR makes, compared to the RB25DET, considering the latter is turbocharged. I had planned to add a turbo at some point but I'm on the fence about whether I'll even need it (though I do love the sudden onset of extra torque). Any other 370GT owners around the traps, I'd love to hear about your experiences with this car (good and bad).
    • Perhaps the answer is... more jacks!* *proper jacks must be used.
    • I NEVER think about using a scissor jack unless there is absolutely no other alternative. f**king things are dangerous, annoying and stupid.
