Looks like its on the road to recovery, don't stress, I've done similar things in my time, as have lots of people.

Weld the metal where it's meant to be, then lay skids or go racing or whatever floats your boat and enjoy the car for the purpose you bought it.

Mate, I would be looking at reshelling completely., but it depends on you as to what kind of access you have to the right tools, skills and $$ to get this shell 100% again.

I personally would rather spend the time on sourcing out another shell and transferring the drive line over rather than worry about getting the chassis 100%

No need to reshell - he's doing a great job keeping another Skyline out of the scrap yard. I say keep working on it dude, you seem to have a good grasp on how to fix it up, and I'm sure if you keep at it you'll have a straight and clean example.

you have some thinking to do

  • Purchase price - spend remaining
  • Yours and others Effort to remedy
  • Future purpose of vehicle - Track or Road
  • Dedication and persistence to complete
  • Timeframe to remedy
  • Best outcome
  • End value of vehicle

Personally, I'd buy a $6k replacement and swap some parts over then sell remaining bits

Yeah I was thinking of buying another shell... I will be taking to a guy in September to have a look at the chassis for me and I'll go on from there..

This car will be street only, I say that only because I have never been to any track days and just wouldn't know.

I have a escort RS2000 sitting in the shed that is mine! :D

So I'm starting to toss up between this & the 32.. Or both :/

But now I really want to get a GTR shell (R32) and start throwing money at that instead of this gtst.

And yes, colourclassic, I don't want to see another one go to the scrap yard either. :(

But for now I'm still buying random parts for the gtst when I see them pop up on this forum, I have a bad habit of hoarding, especially with cars, no matter how crappy they are I want to keep them lol..

Oh well, we will see what happens. Cheers for input and replies guys :)

EDIT: any ideas on how much difference there is between a good, clean & rolling shell is for a 32 gtr & gtst? (Price wise)

how long is a pce of string? People seem to be asking ALOT of money for GTS shells or even complete these days when they are not worth it....Im sure if you shop around you could find one.

could always sell you mine...

Well it's not going to be for a while, if ever.. But I'll be letting you know ahaha

Youve gone this far with the car so you might as well finish it off. . Even the youngest of the r32s are now twenty years old, finding a straight /undamaged shell will be difficult at best

  • 2 weeks later...

I'll post some pics up tomorrow guys.

I need some help getting some good HD pictures of the rear guards on an R32 gtst so I can get the shape right mainly the corners or the wheel well

If anyone could help me out that would be great..

Cheers :)

EDIT: WITHOUT side skirts and rear pods.

Okay some more pics of what we (my pop) has done :P

Sheet metal off an old racing Cortina. Hehe.

image-42.jpg

Bent around into shape and welds grinded off

image-43.jpg

....This is what I was doing whilst pop was grinding and welding away, fun times..

image-44.jpg

That is all for now. :)

How hard was it to pull all the dash out like? I was thinking of doing it to mine just to tidy everything up. How long did it take you to get it to that point?

I followed a quick guide on skyline owners forum..

But didn't remove EVERYTHING that was stated. Only because I didn't need to.

Only took me about an hour, maybe less..

Fun part will be putting the new bits and pieces in next weekend.

But ALOT easier that I thought it would be

Didn't drop the steering column either.

There you go, scuff plates and pillars I left on, also didn't drop steering column but would make it a bit easier.

All done with new cluster surround and dash, a lot easier than I though it was. Only problem was the glovebox, but I didn't see the bit above it that had to click onto the stock strut bar..

Glad it's over though.

Started her up and my oil pressure guage now works? Cool. Haha (never used to)

EDIT: Oh! And new vents ;)

I'm taking a guess here, is this a T2 flange? :/

image-49.jpg

Need to weld my that BOV and a nipple to my cooler pipe.

Didn't even think about the adaptor plate I needed...

That's a massive no on the t2 flange mate. A quick Google search would confirm that quicker than posting a question. Any fabrication place could knock one up for you easy

    • My thinking is that if the O2 sensor is shot then your entire above described experience is pure placebo.
    • Here is the mess that I made. That filler there was successful in filling dents in that area. But in the middle area. I can feel dents. And I've gone ocer it multiple times with filler. And the filler is no longer there because i accidently sanded it away. I've chased my tail on this job but this is something else lol. So I'm gonna attempt filler one more time and if it doesn't work I'll just high fill primer the door and see where the issues are because guidecoat is of no use atm.
    • Ok, so I think I sort of figured out where I went wrong. So I definitely overthinked it, and I over sanded, which is probably a large part of the problem. to fix it, I ended up tapping some spots that were likely to be high, made them low, filled them in, and I tackled small sections at a time, and it feels a lot better.    I think what confused me as well is you have the bare metal, and some spots darker and some are lighter, and when I run my finger across it, it' would feel like it's a low spot, but I think it's just a transition in different texture from metal to body filler.    When your finger's sliding on the body filler, and crosses over to the bare metal, going back and forth, it feels like it's a low spot. So I kept putting filler there and sanding, but I think it was just a transition in texture, nothing to do with the low or high spot. But the panel's feels a lot better, and I'm just going to end up priming it, and then I'll block it after with guide coat.   Ended up wasting just about all of my filler on this damn door lol
    • -10 is plenty for running to an oil cooler. When you look at oil feeds, like power steering feeds, they're much smaller, and then just a larger hose size to move volume in less pressure. No need for -12. Even on the race cars, like Duncans, and endurance cars, most of them are all running -10 and everything works perfectly fine, temps are under control, and there's no restrictions.
    • Update: O2 sensor in my downpipe turned out to be faulty when I plugged in to the Haltech software. Was getting a "open circuit" warning. Tons of carbon buildup on it, probably from when I was running rich for a while before getting it corrected. Replaced with new unit and test drove again. The shuffle still happens, albeit far less now. I am not able to replicate it as reliably and it no longer happens at the same RPM levels as before. The only time I was able to hear it was in 5th going uphill and another time in 5th where there was no noticeable incline but applying more throttle first sped it up and then cleared it. Then once in 4th when I slightly lifted the throttle going over a bump but cleared right after. My understanding is that with the O2 sensor out, the ECU relies entirely on the MAP tune and isn't able to make its small adjustments based on the sensors reading. All in all, a big improvement, though not the silver bullet. Will try validating the actuators are set up correctly, and potentially setting up shop time to tune the boost controller on closed loop rather than the open loop it is set to now. Think if it's set up on closed loop to take the O2 reading, that should deal with these last bits. Will try to update again as I go.
