Hi, Just a question regarding tuning.

RB20DET specialists only no RB25/RB26 replies please

I want to try 800kw on my rb20det I know it sounds stupid but, has anyone tried this before?

I know it needs a lot of mods but, has anyone achieved this before??

Please no reactions similar like these:

RB25 and/or RB26 is better.

Why not swap the RB20DET for a RB25/RB26.

RB25/RB26 is better at this power level

Why not buy a R32 GTR

It would not be economically

Many thanks

Doubt anyone has tried.

No going to be bothered searching if anyone has.

But you'll require 10,000+ rpm

Something upwards of 50psi

And a lot of strengthening, and flowing of all components.

And it would be a complete dog to drive anywhere except down a 1/4 mile

But for those 10 seconds or less....................................................... OP will be freeeeeeeeeeeee!

Ummmmmm...... wheres Roy?

The mad scientists is probably ripping apart the block, replacing the piston rings he fried :action-smiley-069:

ha yeah if roy can't back you up you're boned

you'll need a strong laptop too, one that can handle being slammed shut & told to shut up

Dont forget to weld in the floorpan!

It can be done, it just depends on how much of the RB20 you want use

If want want the use 20 piston rods crank block and head then no your shit outta luck

But if your happy to swap them for say 30 block crank pistons and rods and a 26 head then yeah 1100 hp from a RB20 is easy done

OP, have you considered swapping to an RB25/RB26?

These are better.

Why not swap to an RB25/RB26?

RB25/RB26 would be better at these power levels. I think you should do it. I hope I was able to suggest this to you before you went ahead with the RB20, because RB25/RB26 are better. At these power levels.

Or buy an R32 GTR.

In all seriousness we are talking 1000hp... I believe that to be a power figure that requires an experienced engine builder to produce an engine. That being said I also do not think it matters what modern engine you start with... To get it to 1000hp would probably be a similar amount of work regardless.

Therefore OP should take his RB20 to an experienced engine builder and ask them to produce a 1000hp engine capable of over 10,000rpm. Then OP will simply need the manifolds and a turbo to suit.

$100,000.00 later and it will rip good skids.

This must be with the Motec system and a stand alone fuel management system?

    • Yeah, hard to find and a pain in the ass to change with the transverse engine. I’ve worked on a GTiR before and it’s not a job I’d ever want to do again. theres a company in South Africa that makes RS3 gearbox adaptors for the AWD SR20 including gearbox mounts, so I could modernise it and go a dual clutch with paddles. For now tho, it ticks all the boxes. Super cheap, can throw the kids and their junk in the back, and SR20 that I can turbo cheaply, a CVT that’s not a dog’s breakfast like the V35, and has 80% interchangeable parts with stuff I can source from the wreckers cheaply…. But it’s still unique. I love the wagon back of the Autech version. It’s cheap enough that I can buy another stock manual FWD Primera with SR20VE, swap the gearbox to the N15 pulsar short gear ratio box, swap out the brakes to the R32 ones I pulled off my 32, register it on club plates and take it racing. $1300 shipping from NZ. Heaps of parts and aftermarket builders for transverse SR20’s in NZ.
    • Hard to say, just pop the rocker covers off and have a look if you think it's cammed. You probably need to replace the valve cover gasket/half moons anyways.
    • From my youth: GTi-R clutch change is a massive pain. The gearboxes are fragile? But the car is super cool and I want one 😢
