I bought a new set of BC coilovers (the red ones not gold ones) and i was wondering if it is worth it taking it to a suspension place so they can full adjust the springs and dampers for the best nice, low and comfortable ride. Is it worth the price? pedders charge too much, like $140 and other places like big o tyres only $50. Or should i do them myself? ride now it seems ok, i just really adjusted the dampers to soft but it can be better. Any help, advice and tips would be appreciated. thanks

No. Fit them and adjust the dampers to suit your style. If they are too hard then you should have bought them with lower spring rates or gone for replacement shocks and springs for the stock setup

i know i was thinking i should of payed $100 extra and got the gold ones with that extra canister on the side.

When i was adjusting the coilovers i was measuring them up with my older ones ... do i adjust the bottom bit of the coilver or do i adjust the spring for height? i cant really remember what i did...also the button on top of the coilver soft damper = bouncy ride and hard damper = stiff ride? I JUST WANT BEST COMFORTABLE RIDE WITH LOW HEIGHT! its a r32 gtst by the way :bunny:

Adjust the bottom one. Don't adjust the locks around the spring.

Install them, get your ride height right and then play with dampers. I cant tell you damper setting 12 will be fine because what works for one person doesn't work for another. YOU know how you like your car to feel. Not me

i actually adjusted most of it with the bottom part but when i was lining it up to the right mm i did the spring too a bit too...what does it do? sorry im not 100% sure what the adjusters on the coilovers too..i just want the exact same settings on all the coilovers

It changes the spring rate basically. but if you loosen it to get lower spring rates then you run the risk of the spring falling out of the holders.

If it were me I would just measure all the spring heights and adjust the one you changed to be the same height. You will need to use something accurate like vernier calipers (if you have any/any big enough)

Then loosen the bottom one and spin the base to lower or raise the height. I put mine in the car and then adjusted them to suit the height I wanted. Measure the exposed thread, then adjusted the other side to be the same

The more you lower, the more adjustability you will have to add via adjustable bushes or arms to be able to get a decent alignment. The lowest you can go it about 350mm front 340mm rear (wheel centerline to guard) before the handling just becomes horrid. At that height you need to add quite a lot of adjustable components. If you can find the old SydneyKid group buy threads the info is in there.

Low and comfortable trade off each other, so you generally don't expect to get both.

Re dampener setting: set it half way then drive it for a while. After your used to it, then play with it for a bit.

so basically keep the stock spring height, just adjust the bottom bit of the coilover and the button on top for the dampers? damn, im not sure what the stock spring height was.

The spring adjustment is to adjust preload, BC will have a recomended pre load to start of with and for most people they will keep at that if you aren't fine tuning,. Eitherway its always good to check that preloads are set correct on all new coilovers before just chucking them in sometimes they are off.

Aren't BC dyno'd before they're shipped? If so, I'd leave it at the settings, maybe move it a little bit either way.

i adjusted the spring, i had to raise it a bit. Isnt that how u are supposed to change the height? move the spring up and down? i moved up the spring because it was sagging to the days. Someone told me here to change the adjustment at the bottom where the single bolt sits, but people at tyre shops told me to adjust the spring, so i took their word. Its sitting on r32 gtr stockies which is 225/50/16 and there is maybe half an inch gap between the arch and the wheels. Whats to point of buying coilovers if you are gonna leave it on stock settings?

seriously, i think i f**ked up, because the ride still isnt smooth, you can still feel it pretty hard going over potholes. The dampers are on softest setting too. Oh and parramatta rd too...it was a nightmare especially between parramatta and auburn

they are coilovers, they are not soft.

bcs run i think around 8k which is double your stock spring rate. they are going to be hard because they are 8k coilovers, if they are not suited to how you like the feel possibly consider selling and buying the sydneykid setup.

the car still wobbles left to right when you go over those dodgy potholes, crevises, incles and declines etc...u know what i mean? i still believe they can run better i just need to know the right answer. Im gonna try to increase the dampers to hard and change my tires as i need to anyway. Also i want to know the best spring lengths and the length of the adjuster at the bottom. In time i guess

There are 2 adjustements on the spring. One is for adjusting height. One is for adjusting preload. They are not meant for adjusting the opposite thing.

You can either play with them and work it out for yourself (should take about 30 seconds) or you can google what the spring adjustments on a coilover are supposed to do.

Try increasing the dampers (i.e. making them a bit harder). Your springs are pretty stiff, and probably not that well dampened (considering the cheap dampers), expect a stiff ride.

I paid people at tyre shops to align my wheels, and my car drove worse afterwards. They also said that <insert tyre they are trying to sell> is better than what I have on my car, no, it's not. They also said that I couldn't fit 265/35/18 (on BNR34 wheels) on my car, psh. I would laugh at their faces if they told me to adjust the suspension height with the spring seat when I have base height adjustable struts.

I used to drive through Parramatta Rd on almost a daily basis with my GT-R. I had old TEINs on there, my gods it was horrid. At least the Ohlins installed now are more compliant (although not 'tuned').

FYI standard R32 GT-R spring rates are (from memory) 3 and 3.5 kg/mm (f,r).

    • Wheel alignment immediately. Not "when I get around to it". And further to what Duncan said - you cannot just put camber arms on and shorten them. You will introduce bump steer far in excess of what the car had with stock arms. You need adjustable tension arms and they need to be shortened also. The simplest approach is to shorten them the same % as the stock ones. This will not be correct or optimal, but it will be better than any other guess. The correct way to set the lengths of both arms is to use a properly built/set up bump steer gauge and trial and error the adjustments until you hit the camber you need and want and have minimum bump steer in the range of motion that the wheel is expected to travel. And what Duncan said about toe is also very true. And you cannot change the camber arm without also affecting toe. So when you have adjustable arms on the back of a Skyline, the car either needs to go to a talented wheel aligner (not your local tyre shop dropout), or you need to be able to do this stuff yourself at home. Guess which approach I have taken? I have built my own gear for camber, toe and bump steer measurement and I do all this on the flattest bit of concrete I have, with some shims under the tyres on one side to level the car.
    • Thought I would get some advice from others on this situation.    Relevant info: R33 GTS25t Link G4x ECU Walbro 255LPH w/ OEM FP Relay (No relay mod) Scenario: I accidentally messed up my old AVS S5 (rev.1) at the start of the year and the cars been immobilised. Also the siren BBU has completely failed; so I decided to upgrade it.  I got a newer AVS S5 (rev.2?) installed on Friday. The guy removed the old one and its immobilisers. Tried to start it; the car cranks but doesnt start.  The new one was installed and all the alarm functions seem to be working as they should; still wouldn't start Went to bed; got up on Friday morning and decided to have a look into the no start problem. Found the car completely dead.  Charged the battery; plugged it back in and found the brake lights were stuck on.  Unplugging the brake pedal switch the lights turn off. Plug it back in and theyre stuck on again. I tested the switch (continuity test and resistance); all looks good (0-1kohm).  On talking to AVS; found its because of the rubber stopper on the brake pedal; sure enough the middle of it is missing so have ordered a new one. One of those wear items; which was confusing what was going on However when I try unplugging the STOP Light fuses (under the dash and under the hood) the brake light still stays on. Should those fuses not cut the brake light circuit?  I then checked the ECU; FP Speed Error.  Testing the pump again; I can hear the relay clicking every time I switch it to ON. I unplugged the pump and put the multimeter across the plug. No continuity; im seeing 0.6V (ECU signal?) and when it switches the relay I think its like 20mA or 200mA). Not seeing 12.4V / 7-9A. As far as I know; the Fuel Pump was wired through one of the immobiliser relays on the old alarm.  He pulled some thick gauged harness out with the old alarm wiring; which looks to me like it was to bridge connections into the immobilisers? Before it got immobilised it was running just fine.  Im at a loss to why the FP is getting no voltage; I thought maybe the FP was faulty (even though I havent even done 50km on the new pump) but no voltage at the harness plug.  Questions: Could it be he didnt reconnect the fuel pump when testing it after the old alarm removal (before installing the new alarm)?  Is this a case of bridging to the brake lights instead of the fuel pump circuit? It's a bit beyond me as I dont do a lot with electrical; so have tried my best to diagnose what I think seems to make sense.  Seeking advice if theres for sure an issue with the alarm install to get him back here; or if I do infact, need an auto electrician to diagnose it. 
    • Then, shorten them by 1cm, drop the car back down and have a visual look (or even better, use a spirit level across the wheel to see if you have less camber than before. You still want something like 1.5 for road use. Alternatively, if you have adjustable rear ride height (I assume you do if you have extreme camber wear), raise the suspension back to standard height until you can get it all aligned properly. Finally, keep in mind that wear on the inside of the tyre can be for incorrect toe, not just camber
    • I know I have to get a wheel alignment but until then I just need to bring the rear tyres in a bit they're wearing to the belt on the inside and brand new on the outside edge. I did shorten the arms a bit but got it wrong now after a few klms the Slip and VDC lights come on. I'd just like to get it to a point where I can drive for another week or two before getting an alignment. I've had to pay a lot of other stuff recently so doing it myself is my only option 
    • You just need a wheel alignment after, so just set them to the same as current and drive to the shop. As there are 2 upper links it may also be worth adding adjustable upper front links at the same time; these reduce bump steer when you move the camber (note that setting those correctly takes a lot longer as you have to recheck the camber at each length of the toe arm, through a range of movement, so you could just ignore that unless the handling becomes unpredictable)
