Hey!

My HID headlights have started to randomly turn off while driving.

It will usually flicker on/off for a second before staying off. They turn straight back on again after turning the lights on and off, but will start doing it again shortly after. Its not both lights in unison either. One goes... then the other.

It appears to be triggered by G-forces/movement as it often flicks off when i make a sharp turn or go over minor bumps in the road.

Anyone know what could be causing this or of a good auto-electrician in the Brisbane area?

I can't find anything on the forums except someone in Sydney with the same issue on a V35 that had zero responses.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Sounds like it's the lamps. Have you tried another lamp? Turning it off and back on makes the ballast kickstart the lamp with an initial high voltage discharge. It's more likely your lamps would both go out so close together rather than your ballasts.

Replace the lamps.

Make sure you get colour matched ones

I had the same issue with my Stagea running Xennons, and they would both go out when driving at night. Fixed by replacing the old ones with new ones.

I guess we don't know how it is. :yucky:

Actually, while it's fresh in my mind, not that I need to buy any now but I'm a little disappointed with the high beam performance of these headlights. Even my BA lights up a street better with its high beams. I suppose that's more of a limitation of the headlight mechanism but as far as squeezing the most performance out of the lamps themselves, which ones do you recommend Chris?

I have seen LED lights in these. dont seem to be that bad.

HID bulbs pulse when they need to be replaced. They often don't "burn out" perse, but the chemical reaction inside the bulb reaches its limit, and needs to turn off to rewind the process. Replace bulb, It will be fine. Note: don't touch bulb with fingers, or it will go pop.

What high beam halogens? I thought the headlight mechanism just repositions the HID bulbs up a little higher? Hence my question. I'm seeking the best performing bulb for the job.

Ahh the G37/V36 are bi-xenon. The cutoff shield drops when you high beam.

Look at the link I sent you, there are some 'higher output' bulbs but they cost a pretty penny. I think you'll be happy with the Philips Xtreme (since it's closer to 5000K than the Osram Night Breakers).

Yes, good quality (genuine) bulbs are expensive. I've been through $150+ worth of ebay xenon bulbs and can tell you to go genuine from the get go.

One seller sent me 3 4300K bulbs, all different shades of white/yellow. What a waste of money!

To add, switching from ebay to Genuine Philips D2S gave a very noticeable improvement in light (colour, brightness, more evenly spread beam). Same projector/headlight.

That's why I'm advising to go genuine, I've already been though the shit so you don't have to!

Exactly why I asked. :)

I can't remember what my V36 came with off the boat but I'm fairly certain they were Osram bulbs. Anyway, when the time comes, I'll seek out the Philips ones.

I replaced the D2S bulbs in my 5GEN Liberty last night (have to get to the headlight via wheel well, shitty clips makes life difficult). Lights were so dim I couldn't see at night, the driving lights were brighter (country car so assuming lights were on all the time).

Chucked those Philips D2S replacement bulbs in = can see now.

So which ones of the bulbs did u buy? my stock ones on the v36 are not bright enough imo...

I thought he mentioned that in the last line of his last post?

uumm yeah he mentioned its philips but that brand has more than one type of bulb...just wanna know which has most output so i can spend my money wisely... :)

    • looking for some help and maybe some insight on others experience with a new LSD. R34 GT ran and drove beautifully, but always alot of grip loss due to the open R200 rear end, so I just installed a new 1.5 LSD way into the stock open R200 for a ER34. Simple. Everything seemed right. I test drove for the first time this weekend. as I started to back out the garage the first time slowly with tires straight it sounded and felt like I had a loose or half disconnected drive shaft...that was clucking around loose and shaking entire vehicle, and making it feel like the trans clutch was spontaneously slipping then grabbing very roughly while just letting out pedal slowly. I backed it out went to pull forward with the same noise, shake and slip grab feeling with hesitation, I turned the tires to back out more and then pulled ahead some same thing but worst because of added wheel resistance (which that I expected) puzzled … pulling it back in checking everything over and finding nothing wrong, I tried it the next day. same thing, couldn’t believe how it shook everything again making a terrible noise and making it feel like the trans clutch was slipping and grabbing, but I got it out of garage into the driveway, got it straight, drove forward and then reveres a few times in a straight line everything shaking , causing what felt like clutch slip and grab every time, sounded like right behind front driver tire and I could feel it in the floor board with my feet,... worst right when beginning to let clutch pedal out to engage slightly, shuttering and sounding terrible along the way…I managed to slowly get down the road, babying it the whole way, once I was rolling (out of 1st) seemed to be better and between shifts, then clutch felt closer to normal…not slip/ grab etc., but back down to any stop, straight road or turning, same thing. Made no difference if all tires were straight or if I was turning. All other gauge read out correct. with in 2 miles as planned I reached the empty parking lot and performed the break in procedure that came with lsd, essentially to drive in a figure 8 a bunch.  Did this, binding chattering, and shaking the car the whole way. I drove it back home seemed somewhat normal once I was in straight line and past 10 mph or so, and I know it will “bind” on corners and cause some tires squeal when turning especially from a stop, but when I begin to move it still causes what feels like the trans clutch to slip and jerk badly as well as shaking the entire car, and sounds terrible, that I didn’t expect. I used the fluid they supplied with LSD kit and did the breaking, planning to change fluid as they suggest after breaking, but wondering will it get smoother or less aggressive with use? maybe a 1.5 is just too aggressive for normal road driving?   I have a LSD that I put in my 71 cuda when I restored it, with amazing smooth , quite yet effective results. Different style LSD but that ones a joy to drive. maybe expecting too much from this R200?
