My car was incorrectly listed as CVT at the auctions. Nameplate showed AT.F4

Interesting, the CVT was only available on the 350GT sedan, and the 4sp auto only on the 250GT I believe.

incorrect. it also featured in the Y34 cedrics and glorias.

Sure.. I was just referring to the V35 though.. the only V35 the CVT was available in was the 350GT sedan. Even then it was an option, the 5AT was also available.

Is that the placard in the engine bay?

Yep.. the plate in the engine bay on the drivers side. it will tell you the VIN, engine number, transmission type, final drive type, paint code and interior colour (and a few other things).

Also worth noting CVTs don't have gears.. the '8 speeds' are just computer programmed ratios it uses in manual mode, theoretically, a TCU reprogram and it will become a 12speed, or 3 speed, or whatever you like. In 'D' it has a near infinite number of ratios it can use.

I haven't even had the car for 12 months & still learning about it.

You can have 50 speeds if you can find someone that knows how to reprogram it...

But in reality, you are just sitting on a time bomb. Especially if you are going to take the car to the track.

Have a read of this, educate yourself, and see how this gearbox differs from every other belt/chain CVTs

It is an amazing transmission, and years ahead of its time...

However there were some massive limitations with it, and in the end Nissan/JATCO could not justify the development and went the more conventional route and now make quite a good living, thank you very much, selling their CVTs to pretty much every single volume car maker...

I belive that there was a prototype Williams F1 car, from the Damon Hill era, that was fitted with a CVT transmission and some mental motor with an insanely narrow power band which would have been unbeatable had F1 not insisted that cars had to have stepped gears...

Just needs a larger oil cooler preferrably with a temperature sensor & gauge to monitor when its getting put through its paces at the track.

Otherwise if it were broken, I'd be getting the gears jumping up & down when I drive it now!!!

I don't think this toroidal roller cvt, or a version of it, is used by anyone anywhere anymore. It was only suitable for RWD setups and didn't have the market to justify R&D costs to continue development. Plenty of xtronic (pushbelt) cvts used by Nissan and sold to other car makers, they seem to have them sorted fairly well now, they are reliable, and fluid price is coming down. About the only thing they battle with now is customer perception.. A lot of people don't like CVTs just because they are CVTs and don't have 'gear changes' like they are used to. For high power vehicles, multi speed standard autos are still the way to go, old technology, but it has been around for a long time and everyone knows how to build them.

Can anyone suggest an aftermarket workshop (anywhere in Australia) who deals with these cars please???

-Transmission Oil Cooler Upgrade with temperature sensor & gauge for monitoring is required...

I don't think there is anything particularly 'bad' about these transmissions, the issues arise when you need any repairs done!!

I'm fairly sure someone mentioned MV Automatics in Adelaide back on the first page too?

    • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!

    • Appreciate the correction on the "ground", that will make a huge difference to looking at this. That makes complete sense about AF70/AF71 which is what I had come down to being the issue, one of these. I'll have another look in the ignition wiring when I get a chance next week. I'll also make up a jumper wire for running that AF73 test.  ECU is fine, relay itself is fine, pump harness is fine and the pump itself is fine. I am going to upgrade the Walbro 255 anyway with a DW300 I have since I need to replace the fuel sender and I'm going to upgrade the FPR with my chasebays kit ready for new plenum/injectors/dbw, but I'll get this working first. That's why this is so frustrating.
