Hi everyone,

I've been looking at stagea's for a while and even though I'm on a budget, I'm decided to finally get one.

I found a cheap one (4k) with a dead turbo according to the owner.

With all the specialists around here, I'd like to know if it is worth it, and how easy it would be to fix it.

Owner says "Turbo has failed. Not leaking oil or blowing smoke, so the car still drives ok, but no boost so it is slow."

Appreciate the feedback!

Speak to Craig (Jetwreck) about the turbo swap, or get him to have a look at the car for you.

Turbo replacement is very common, and expensive if you get quotes from the wrong mechanic. My guess is they got a 5k quote and now just want rid of it.

Hi Val,

If your just after an everyday run around you can get the turbo rebuilt (close to standard) and installed for about $1,950. It's usually a 1 day turnaround from the day you drop it off to me.

P.S. If you want some more performance its about $400 more for the highflow.

any questions feel free to buzz me on 0406754304.

cheers

Craig

Thanks for the quick reply Craig

The stock would have more than enough power as it would be just a daily.

Do you know how long the entire thing (send turbo, get it back) usually takes?

Also, the guy says the car is drivable and has low power (which you would expect) so I wouldn't need to put it on a truck.

Is that risky to drive around like that?

Cheers

Depends on the damage to the turbo for driving around....if its just the rear impeller gone its OK....but the lack of power is dangerous.

As far as the turn around time. I have a spare turbo so I usually get that rebuilt when you say your right to go.....it takes a couple of days to turn around. Getting it all installed is usually a drop off on Friday arvo and you can pick it up Saturday arvo.

anyway...if you want to go ahead give me a buzz and we can put the wheels in motion.

cheers

  • 2 weeks later...

Pretty happy with the stagea, drives nicely (I've got nothing to compare it to as it's my first though).

Hasn't been the easiest job apparently, but I will let Jetwreck comment on that :)

One thing that I noticed is that the car stutters a little when reversing / doing a slow turn. Is that common on these cars?

I will also replace the stereo with a Nexus 7 tablet, I can take pictures of the process and post it somewhere in here in case someone is interested.

(if anyone has a double din facia around Sydney or a good link for one, I'm interested. Also, maybe some dremel job on the original one might do, maybe someone done that already?)

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction to get the car taken care of, couldn't have been any better ;)

I have a black facia and top pocket for sale but you will also need double din ac controls if you have the bose stereo.

ac control: http://page18.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/w124726174

I cut and dremeled my facia and just used the ac circuit board (I have the fawn/grey colour)

A few pics to give you an idea of what I did.

I have an android quad core deck with 1024*600 resolution. Brand is Joying, they are on eBay. Runs Android Kitkat 4.4. Works very well. Only negative is I don't like the Am/FM radio sound but I just run internet radio anyway.

I have factory Bose so had to run a PAC ROEM-NIS2 adaptor to get rid of the hiss. Sound is exceptional.

    • Well, this is probably where a wiring diagram and a multimeter come into play.
    • I can say to anyone thats doing this; having done a number of R clusters; just be careful if its an unknown cluster.  It takes a bit of force to pull up; but if it feels excessive then its probably stuck. I've had this and pulled the entire hair spring out; and I can tell you; its not easy getting the correct spring replacement with the correct inner diameter and winding. In my case someone had used some sort of adhesive to stick it to the spindle and it pulled the whole spindle out; which the force seperated the hairspring from the spindal and caused it to deform.  You may have to clean it (IPA); or in my case if i'd known i should have used some sort of solvent on it.  Also check out Cruizin Central on eBay. He does all sorts of dials; and you can email him with any custom designs you want. So if you want like certain logos etc...he'll send you a mock of what it will look like then you accept the order and he'll take care of the rest. Fantastic dials and he can do basically any design you want.
    • Have you confirmed its the actual axles? Also the wheel bearings that mount on the hubs to hold the axles wear out. I replaced mine as they got play in them. It sorted my play issue.
    • Ive converted a few clusters for the R33 with 320km/h dials. On the back there are some pads which can be bridged or unbridged (using solder or wick braid) to calibrate it. There is one bridge which is for MPH <> KPH; and there are combinations of bridges to offset it. There is probably a diagram  For example; this is my conversion for a 180km/h dial to a 320km/h dial (I put custom GT-R dials on it with the GTS25t layout) If you have J2 soldered (assuming the S clusters have a similar config to the R clusters); you may need to remove that solder
    • Back on topic 😉, these are some of the notable pages from the booklets that are supplied with each weekly parts update. I never knew the BNR32 test mule car had an S13 Silvia front end... *Edit: On closer inspection the test car still had the R32 body, but only the front end had Silvia panels etc.
