It wasn't a pandemic in 2019 either. Someone said that statement, and how'd that turn out for us?! 😛

In beginning of March 2020 it was still a running joke, mid March it went to shit

Shit box survived all 7 sessions of hooning and circuit.

Didn't get a clean run on any of the sessions as there was a bit of traffic. Camber changes did make a massive difference and ended up going into T1 at 160km/h without the front washing out so happy with that!

Some eFame shots of the shit box.

Racing is all about WOTIF

Guess you better go race again ;)

haha next All Jap Day!

Meanwhile, I'm trying to work out what night I can go attack SMSP again, I am keen on a low 1m50s around the circuit with RS-4 tyres.

I feel that I am happy with how the car handles now, the front camber made a massive difference! Now it's just practice and more of it.

I'm just glad to see you using the car.

I'm feeling slightly more motivated again, but wont get back to tub work until the XR5 engine is sealed to avoid contaminating it.

Sweet, this is why you built it man! Go send it :)
I dont have headlights on the 32 so cant do the night runs :(

I suppose so, I also still hate the car. If someone walked up to me and asked for a straight swap with a M2/3 Comp I would do it in microseconds.

LOL... why aren't there headlights?

It's a bit like that, you see another working car and it gives you a bit more motivation. I did cheat and drop it off at a shop to do all the heavy lifting this time round.

Is that just a refresh on the XR5 OR full build?

The bucket I picked up for $500 with multiple spun bearings so I could try my hand at an engine build and teach the kids. It's just a stock refresh with some added block mod shims between the liners for if someone wants to lean on it harder later.

If it runs it'll cost me easy 5-6k in the end by the time I replace DMF/Clutch setup etc but could end up with a semi cool car to daily then swap/sell off for something else rinse/repeat as I'm sick of driving the 4wd daily.

It's manual, turbo, bucket seats, nice electrics etc and running is hopefully worth more than it cost me.

If it blows up on first start or I dont get it running, I will part it out, go back to Silvia and buy something else to daily (335i? 545i?).

Anyway, learning lots, I think?

I should add, bad choice for a learning platform, FWD, 5cyl, Euro... not the easiest car to work on at all, it was like 10hrs to remove the entire front subframe with engine/box attached to get the engine out, I am dreading reinstall...

I really should have bought an XR6T or something, shit even an NA one.

I

Funny story,
it was at the mechanics workshop sitting in the carpark and the drivers glass just fell off, he got it on his security camera lol. and the price of a replacement is just a joke, so we did this

@ActionDan well it is a Volvo afterall lolol

Hopefully home stretch to get it back on the road and dose city.

@Jasoncauser LOL how does a headlight just fall off lolol

Nope, I'm still mic'ing bearings because I "had to be sure" and double check the machine shops work.

That meant buying a mic and learning how to use it and associated tools lol

Oh then there was the 12hrs or so I spent weight matching the piston/rod assemblies because I "had to be sure" and weighed them all and found up to 8g difference....

Could've stopped at 3g like the machine shop said for a street engine, but "had to be sure" and went to 1g....

Shoot me.

Because someone's been in there before you. They are a pain to pull apart from factory, no chance factory goop stopped gooping suddenly

Yeah we thought the same when we looked at the glass channel lol
we did toy with the idea of putting lights in the panels we made but will just get those Motive headlight ducts down the track

    • Was going to say the car pulls up nicely everywhere, especially going into that last long right hander before the main straight. Looks like a lot of fun.
    • Hey Dave, welcome aboard! Good to see another soon-to-be Stagea owner here. The wagons are awesome — plenty of space, still got that Skyline DNA, and loads of potential if you’re into mods. Definitely post up pics when you get it, everyone here loves seeing new builds. What model/year are you looking at?
    • See if you can thermal epoxy a heatsink or two onto it?
    • The other problem was one of those "oh shit we are going to die moments". Basically the high spec Q50s have a full electric steering rack, and the povo ones had a regular hydraulic rack with an electric pump.  So couple of laps into session 5 as I came into turn 2 (big run off now, happily), the dash turned into a christmas tree and the steering became super heavy and I went well off. I assumed it was a tyre failure so limped to the pits, but everything was OK. But....the master warning light was still on so I checked the DTCs and saw – C13E6 “Heat Protection”. Yes, that bloody steering rack computer sitting where the oil cooler should be has its own sensors and error logic, and decided I was using the steering wheel too much. I really appreciated the helpful information in the manual (my bold) POSSIBLE CAUSE • Continuing the overloading steering (Sports driving in the circuit etc,) “DATA MONITOR” >> “C/M TEMPERATURE”. The rise of steering force motor internal temperature caused the protection function to operate. This is not a system malfunction. INSPECTION END So, basically the electric motor in the steering rack got to 150c, and it decided to shut down without warning for my safety. Didn't feel safe. Short term I'll see if I can duct some air to that motor (the engine bay is sealed pretty tight). Long term, depending on how often this happens, I'll look into swapping the povo spec electric/hydraulic rack in. While the rack should be fine the power supply to the pump will be a pain and might be best to deal with it when I add a PDM.
    • And finally, 2 problems I really need to sort.  Firstly as Matt said the auto trans is not happy as it gets hot - I couldn't log the temps but the gauge showed 90o. On the first day I took it out back in Feb, because the coolant was getting hot I never got to any auto trans issues; but on this day by late session 3 and then really clearly in 4 and 5 as it got hotter it just would not shift up. You can hear the issue really clearly at 12:55 and 16:20 on the vid. So the good news is, literally this week Ecutek finally released tuning for the jatco 7 speed. I'll have a chat to Racebox and see what they can do electrically to keep it cooler and to get the gears, if anything. That will likely take some R&D and can only really happen on track as it never gets even warm with road use. I've also picked up some eye wateringly expensive Redline D6 ATF to try, it had the highest viscosity I could find at 100o so we will see if that helps (just waiting for some oil pan gaskets so I can change it properly). If neither of those work I need to remove the coolant/trans interwarmer and the radiator cooler and go to an external cooler....somewhere.....(goodbye washer reservoir?), and if that fails give up on this mad idea and wait for Nissan to release the manual 400R
