Hi everyone, I'm looking at some new custom seats for my R34 GTT.

I spoke with Autotechnica and they said their seat rails will not fit, waiting on a response from Velo.

 

I don't really care on brand, I want something ADR approved though, I've heard a few whispers about needing ADR approved seat rails, is this a myth or is it true? (specifically for QLD, nothing on TMR website is vague)

 

Anyone have a combination of seats and rules that is legal / will fit without much f**kery? Cheers! e.g some weird ebay universal seat rail that would fit autotecnica seats

It's actually really difficult to do this legally. Precious few aftermarket rails are legal without being engineered. Same with seats. The cheapy eBay Brides and other similar seats that claim to be "ADR" approved are frequently the shittest quality, so the whole ADR thing must be a massive lie with them.

Probably the only sure fire way would be to enquire of an engineer in your state about what's required. I'd say that going to a motor trimmer and getting Recaros + rails (for lots lotsa $$) would have to include whatever engineering signoff was needed. You could try asking them.

all bolted in with no issues at all, no drilling, just bolt it in :)

Again @Tobz I have a question, as I have a 34 and had to make my own seat "adapters" (i.e large steel plates with huge bolts)

Do the ones from Crank Motorsport raise the seat up much/any? I found that after making some plates up the seats did sit a fair bit higher than they otherwise would have. An off the shelf adapter like the one you listed would have made my life a lot easier!

In any case thanks for posting, people often have R34 problems with seats fitting and end up having to buy rails that do/don't/maybe fit, so getting the info out there is ???

I’m keen to put these in my s15.

How is the lateral support? Any good for track use do you think?

Better than stock, not like a real bucket seat though, heaps more support than stock, heaps less than a dedicated bucket. I think it will be good enough, especially with a harness

Thats the main aim, looking for something relatively stockish looking, that I can use with a harness at track days. 
this seems a good solution.

Whilst the seats may claim "ADR Approved".....

The rails say "Off Road Use only".

That's because the seats don't really need ADR approval and the rails do. And that goes to show you what sort of bullshit people can spin you into thinking that you're buying road legal stuff, when you're not.

None of these seat rails are "ADR Approved". Not these. Not the Bride ones. Not the JJR ones. Nothing. As best I can tell, the only way to get aftermarket seats legally installed is to get an engineer's report on the mounting system. I'd assume that if you went to a proper motor trimmer who sells Recaros etc, that they would likely be able to generate such a report, because they actually do the install work and I'm sure that they have to be able to cover their arses legally. Probably not for free though. But face it, if you're buying thousands of dollars of Recaros for your Landcruiser, a couple hundred extra bucks isn't a big issue. But for cheapskate R33 owners buying seats that are only $200 each (!!), it's a roadblock. Right?

As @GTSBoy states these are not road legal. Another reason I wanted a fairly standard looking seat in the car so as not to arouse suspicion.... I figured if it says recaro or bride or velo it’s pretty obviously aftermarket. Whereas these without branding may have a slight chance of not being picked up.

 

also have kept the originals just in case I ever need to go over the pits

Are you happy with them? Dont feel too cheap? Does the reclining and fold forward feel strong enough?

Any additional observations would be great.

Seats work really well, they don’t seem cheap, they are comfortable enough. I would say it lacks bolstering which can be annoying on longer trips and maybe some additional padding wouldn’t go astray. Overall I am happy, but they are a bit hard and lack bolstering

Do you have a source on this? I don't think that's right. I've scoured the gov websites to find info, and as far as I can tell a simple mod plate will cover a seat replacement (in QLD).

 

I'm still trying to learn more about this before I commit to anything, so I'd like to know exactly what I can/can't and (need) to do.

    • oh they were with that motor, you need to remove the engine to change the spark plugs (don't have to, but it does make it easier)
    • I certainly fall into the annoyed camp, but glad to hear that if it's happening at low boost then I'm not likely going to blow a turbo and end up with metal shards in my oil. Just feels like it prevents me from really driving it without hesitation and "peak" performance. Wonder if it's the VCAM, it did an impressive job of shifting the torque curve and faster spool, but maybe now it's "too fast" and there's too much air for how open the throttle is.  Based on some other threads, will also do some reading on synchronizing the actuators. They are the default actuators that come on the Garrett's and I would think they would be set the same coming from the factory, but if the turbos don't actually work exactly the same way at the same time as previously mentioned, it would be worth making sure the actuators are actuating together properly
    • I went down this rabbit hole before, ended up sourcing a motor from the UK (I'm in Japan) which also didn't function correctly. With the original motor, I disassembled it and reassembled it and it works somewhat, sometimes. What I could deduce from all my screwing around is that there is calibration of the gears on the inside of the motor and two ramps on the main gear which activate switches that operate the motor and move the sunroof either to retract into the roof or tilt. Where I got stuck was that, it seemed in my case that one or both of the switches that are activated by the ramp on the gear did not always activate and thus the motor did not move, causing it to sometimes not retract or tilt (apologies, I've forgotten which way it didn't work.).  Of course this part is discontinued at Nissan now, it's the same part in the S15 but no other models. I also contacted the manufacturer of the component for schematics - forgot the name, they're based in Gifu - but they declined to share the information due to being bound by an NDA, sadly. Looking through my pictures now, it seems I last had a crack at this in 2022. See, I so kindly wrote "open" and "close" next to the switches. If you figure it out, please do tell me. Those little switches, with the red buttons may need to be replaced.
    • It says 300ZX, does that make it an Aus delivered car? Funny how back in the day I just couldn't care less about Z32's and these days I am just in love with them. Back when Nissan was into pushing the envelope. 🤣
