Greetings all!

I want to buy some form of R32 sedan, but people are asking almost 30k+ here in Aus, which seems a bit much 🙃 So looking to try and import one.

I went through Jspec for my R34, and would definitely go through him/them again, but after reaching out I was informed they aren't looking to import those 90's car anymore. From our short conversation, it seemed like they weren't the only ones who have stopped importing them?

Does anyone know a good/reputable importer that is still bringing over the 90's JDM cars?

Cheers

Well, hoping that it is a similar situation that I had with the R34. Ended up getting it to aus for around 140k to my door, when stock Vspecs for sale in aus are at least 220k+. At least, listed for.

Though, if anyone had any recent auction results that might be interesting

Yeah, but that's an R34 GTR right? ....where the % gap between buying via one pathway and the other is equivalent to many 10s of thousands of $$. And with R34 GTRs there is actually something available to buy in JP because 10 years newer + anticipated demand. Whereas..... an R32 sedan is something that would have been very very lucky to have escaped the crusher in JP if it hadn't already been sent overseas. And the difference in what it will cost you over there, plus shipping and related costs, cf what one costs here, is only maybe....$10-20k. That's not a lot of coin when taken in the same breath as the discussion on R34 GTRs, but really speaks to the value proposition.

So I return to my point that it is all subject to the whole availability problem crossed over with the extra risk of buying more or less sight unseen from JP. All in all, it hardly seems worth it either way.

I wouldn't be buying an R32 in the current (Oz) market, because the market prices don't reflect the actual value of the cars. Those Oz prices are reflective of other market prices too (like US) and that's driving JP pricing, because sellers will always charge what the market can bear. And what the market can bear out of JP is about 80-90% of what the market is asking locally (including the extra costs)....just so that it feels like you're getting it cheap. But you're still paying too much. Know what I mean?

Just Jap would still be willing to have a look for one and bring it in for you. You have to expect there is a reason everyone else has given up though, and it's not because people stopped wanting them...

Mmmmmmm, very good points GTSBoy. I don't like the sense you are making.... Not helping me convince myself it is still possible to get one...

True Duncan. I might be putting words in his mouth, but the chap at Jspec said he just didnt want to risk his reputation to import something for a pushy customer and then have them turn around and crack the shits when what they bought turned out to be the rust bucket that he warned them it was...

Was just hoping to get something for a semi daily that I could do some work on myself... (Yes, I know a 35 year old skyline isn't the best idea for a daily car.)

You could try low balling the Australian ones, you never know if a "30k" car is truly a 30K car.

Can I interest you in a V8 R34 sedan? What a perfect daily!

(or alternatively, just go for a full daily only car, there is joy to be had in just commuting around in a 2008 Hyundai Accent, I have found)

I think that might have to be the way, just wait and see if I can snag a bargain...

Keen on a R32 unfortunatly, though I have read your build with great interest! Wouldn't want to part you from your muse! haha. And my long term plan for the car would eventually to convert it to an EV, so wouldn't want to undo all your good work! I still have my trusty 2005 corolla for my daily runabout, also.

  • 2 weeks later...

You could look at Top Rank Import's Global site (Operating from Japan), and ask them about R32's. I know they are still importing R32's to the US so I'm assuming they can do the same for AUS:

    • Hope you aren't too sore after that one, might take a day or 2 to notice yet and I guess it is a loooooong drive home. On the bright side, tube frame front end is a thing at superlap, right?

    • The chart of front pressure to rear pressure (with one being on the x axis and the other being on the y axis) is not a straight line on a typical proportioning valve. At lower pressures there is a straight line with one slope, and at higher pressures that changes to a lower slope. That creates a bend in the line at that pressure, called the knee point. If you do not change the proportionng as the pressure gets higher, you will suffer excessive pressure (at one end of the car or the other, depending on which way you look at the proportioning action) and then get lockups at that end. The HFM BM57, from my memory of previous discussions, is based on the BM57 from a different car (to a Skyline), with a different requirement for the location of the knee point and the distribution of pressure front to rear, and so is not a good choice for an upgrade on a Skyline. Here's a couple of links to some old posts, one from here, one from elsewhere. A lot of it pertains to adjustable prop valves, but the idea is the same. There are plenty of discussions on here about this issue from al the many years of people wanting a cheap/accessible option. https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/learn-me-brake-proportioning-valves/236880/page1/ https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/learn-me-brake-proportioning-valves/236880/page1/
