I'm also after a particular sound. If anyone's a fan of futurama it's like zoidberg "woop woop woop" heh heh.

It's sort of "wup wup wup" or just "wup" in a higher pitch. It's definately not a woosh or psst sound.

It was featured in a HPI dvd on a 4 door r32 with crazy rims and custom paint (from a K class car I think they said). It drifted around on the track and I believe the last thing they said was "lets see if the driver can keep the panels straight" or something.

Anyone know the one?

:)

AHHHH HAHAHAHA. Thats a good one. I was in class when I read that. I know what your talking about someonestolecc but i've never heard anything that sounded like that.

Possibly the most similar noise would the sound of a VL commodore with no BOV and a large intercooler which sounds like a CHOO choo choo choo....

yep thats what i was picturing

i started saying these out loud softly to try and work out what the sounds were then i stopped because im at work and thats just really weird, like keep your children away kinda weird

either way - my turbosmart sounds like a crisp CHI CHI CHI, im after a low pitch BURRRRRRRRRR which my mates gtr with a half plumback makes.

Just get an angry pigeon and put it in the engine bay, shut the bonnet. no one is the wiser. i think they have kits for it. If not, then gimmie a coupla days to catch one of those magic AP-S1 and ill do a professional installation for $45. Bargin!

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA

i'll take one as well.

I dont know about you guys but im in the market for getting a BOV thats similar to the sound a WRC makes with its wastegate. Its more of a high pitch squeal than a conventional "WHOOSH" sound. ANy ideas?

lol.....

hey CC, u hit the nail on the head mate, that's exactly the BOV i'm after, been looking for ages and still can't find it....

anyone?

Yeah me too.

And for those saying it's pipe reverberation it's not - in the HPI video the BOV is visible to see it's got one, but not close enough to see what it's like.

It also sounds different to the reverberation VLs etc get.

Someone mentioned the wastegate on WRCs I think it'd be great to get my car sounding like them off-throttle, but I think the grumble is anti-lag so er... yeah I won't mess with that, although my 351 used to do it :P

If anyone knows what the wup wup wup one is please lemme know as it's the only one that would interest me :(

the vl pipe reverberation makes a low wuv wuv wuv kinda sound, but as cc said its probably not what anyone is after

Yeah i hear what ya saying. The WRC screach is what im after or somethign similar, but the pigoen squealing sounds very interesting as well. Might be worthe looking into that if someone gets more details.

my god..

The total IQ of this forum dropped 200% with this thread.

1.) bov's don't make fluttering noises.

2.) SARD R2D2 makes a single psshh release sound.

3.) if the car on the vid had a bov and made a flutter sound, chances are the bov was set really tight and wasn't opening.

4.) The standard VL sound is what you are hearing on all thse cars going woop woop or chi chi or whatever the **** you want to call it. it just sounds different on different cars.

the pitch of the sound, the length that it goes for, the speed of the flutter all depends on many variables..

eg..

turbo, ball bearing, non ball bearing, number of blades on the turbo's inlet wheel, their angle, the speed at which it is spinning when you release the throttle.

the intercooler pipes, diameter, length, material it is made from.

intake pipe, material it is made of, the length.

the WRC car's would make the same noise as a road driven W or EVO with the bov removed and plugged up, except with anti lag, it makes the sound different again due to the amount of boost. and lets not forget the 32mm inlet resrictors on their turbo's... all these add up to making weird and wonderful noises.

The sound from S14's and S15 with stock bovs is another one.

the reason they make it once you increase boost is that the plumback return line is too small and it can't vent enough back to the inlet.. this causes fluttering.

onec again.

THERE IS NO BOV THAT VENTS MAKING A FLUTTERING SOUND

It's possible, but never the less you're talking out of your arse.

That's obviously not what we've been talking about.

... Considering a WRC car and a road driven STI/EVO are a "bit" different I would imagine they'd sound different too. I also doubt the WRC cars have BOVs that are blocked up. Either they have em, or they don't.

You say that BOVs don't flutter. Here you say they do.

I guess it doesn't matter anyway because I have a s15 stock BOV and even with 20psi it handles it fine and goes a nice woooshkaa through my piping when it "blows off".

THERE IS NO BOV THAT VENTS MAKING A FLUTTERING SOUND

Flutter - noun,

Rapid fluctuation in the pitch of a sound reproduction resulting from variations in the speed of the recording or reproducing equipment.

If we take out recording and reproducing equipment for the sake of what the word is being applied to here I think you'll find BOVs do flutter. They just don't cause reverberations unless they're tightened.

So thanks for dropping the IQ 200% ... :Bang:

    • Well it wasn't as easy as I thought.... and it also wasn't in my original manual which I did end up finding. They discuss the process in the Nismo catalogue though and it requires slight machining. Page 145.  NISMO PARTS CATALOGUE 2020
    • I'm an idiot, my intercooler is rated for 1000hp. I had clicked on the wrong product. Knowing the delta P would be nice, but I'm doubtful I'll do it. Now as for an EMAP, that would be great and I'll get around to it eventually but from my findings in my last post, I'm considering a turbo swap now.
    • You sir, big win tonight. Precision never supplied compressor maps in the past and Idk when they started, but it seems they only offer for a few of the older gen2's which is exactly what I have. I punched in some numbers and seem to have gone with the wrong turbo. 600-700whp isn't in the most efficient area and is close to the choke line. 800whp is well off the map. Punching the numbers into a 68mm gen2 turbo map is bang on in the center. Here I was thinking going smaller would shift the power band down, but in reality it would just make it so much worst due to my rev limit. I would have never thought.
    • Increasing overlap will bring the torque down earlier (and make your idle sound sick lol). Worth a shot (if you dyno time) to experience a bit (providing you are confident your valves won't kiss your pistons). Is to just take off 5 degrees across the boosted area of the map, and then retard the exhaust cam let's say, 3 degrees at a time and then overlay all the runs with VCT on all the way and VCT off as soon as you make positive pressure. Ideally you would have a total of 6x overlays to looks at 0 exhaust & VCT off once manifold pressure is +ve 0 exhaust & VCT on all the way -5 exhaust & VCT off once manifold pressure is +ve -5 exhaust & VCT on all the way -10 exhaust & VCT off once manifold pressure is +ve -10 exhaust & VCT on all the way Just leave your O2 wideband closed loop on for all of the boost area & RPM, and hopefully there isn't too much fuel correction needed and the Haltech is fast enough to compensate (I do this, then apply the correction to the main table). Getting that overlay data should give you a good indication of what to aim for.
    • So, my main limitation here is that the car does not have an oil pressure sensor by default, just a switch. As part of my tune I bought an oil pressure sensor upgrade so I now have access to oil pressure levels and logging rather than just the boolean behaviour of the switch but this means I need to use the tuning app to display this value. So, this rules out using any other app on the iPad. The app will also flash when pressure drops which is a nice feature. I have replaced the centre screen with an Android one, which is awesome for Android Auto, but I think it might be too far away and out of my line of sight. I might add some gauges to it this weekend and just see. I guess if its just temp and oil pressure I can make them massive! 🤣
