hello all,

seen a number of group buys on this site with copy intercoolers, prices lingering around $250 mark (give or take $50). just after peoples opinions on these things? i wouldnt have a clue really about them, but would it be better then a stock intercooler?

at the moment my r32 gtst has pod and exhaust and id be looking to get an rb25 turbo+bleed valve to 14'ish psi, and obviously am going to beed an intercooler. i wouldnt be going much further then that in the way of modding the car.. so would one of these coolers suffice?

obviously id like my moneys worth, but im not keen on spending $1k+ on a top of the range intercooler made for 400hp+ that im never going to push to its limits..

cheers!

shaun.

these intercoolers are great. I had one on my cefiro pushing 1.2 bar during drift days and intake temps never went over 35~40.

with the previous cooler i had (almost same size as the hybrid copy) it got up to 55!!

Keep in mind. those coolers are huge! you will need to mod your front bar to fit but its deff worth the while

I have a hybrid copy - 600x300x76 and have had no problems.

My car span up 200kw on the mercury dyno the other day and inlet temp was at 33 degrees, so the performance of the cooler seems fine

i got a hybird copy aka china cooler 600x300x76, had no problems with it so far, i am running 12psi without a problem. I have been reading thou that the only problem with the hybird china cooler is that the endtanks are not as good as something like a gtr cooler

they're all made in china to pretty much the same standard. As long as you don't get one with a dodgy weld (which you should be able to fix pretty easily anyways) you're good. Intercoolers have been around since 1970, its not brain science, so a dodgy copy would be 99% as good as a big brand one.

Yep I agree.

I run chinese hybrid copy 76x300x600 as in my avatar. My temperature is never above 40 degrees usually 2-3 degrees above ambiant. Doesnt leak and flows extremely well. I wont even change it cause really its very very good and I reckon 300rwkw will be easy with it. I making 230rwkw and the cooler is not one bit stressed thermally.

DO yourself a favour and get one. I got mine for $310. Ive seen them in the 200s or the 500s lol!

All intercoolers are not the same and don't kid yourself that they are made in the same factory.

just take a TRUST core and then compare it to a Cheap Hybrid and then compare it with one of the best, an ARC job.

They are no the same.

yes they do a good job at lower power figures, up to 500hp or so.

I've got a cheap chinese one on my golf which makes 210FWKW and then we have a TRUST on on the GTR.They are both 600x300 and thats were the similarity end.

Even though I have just installed a cheap version myself.. I'd tend to agree with you 600hp. I'd like to hear some comments from people running 400hp+ and/or high boost levels and whether they still think they are that good.

My view is that it's just a way to get a cheap intercooler and keep intake temps down enough until it becomes a weakness. Then you upgrade it again, just like anything else.

the comparison here isn't between top of the range abd knock offs, its between hybrid and hybrid copies (or so I assumed). At this range of the market the differences are minimal, and the namesake isn't worth the hundred's extra.

I have a brand name larger cooler on my car, and my bro has a hybrid copy of similar size.. with similar boost and mods (before the new turbo) there didn't seem to be a lot in it.

I imagine once you start pushing big power it matters, and that slightly better design may shine or something. But I can't see how it could be $1000 better :)

Not much in it between Hybrid and the copies... but say Trust or even better Apexi coolers, then you will start to see a difference. This is obviously more noticable when running more power. A standard old r32 GTR cooler will flow better than a new Hybrid one from what ive seen!

I've seen a car with a hybrid cooler at 250kw at the wheels go to 270 at the wheels, with a cooler from Performance Manufacturing at Tarin Point.

very nice bit of gear.

same settings nothing changed at all!

Just to be sure were they both the same size coolers (as hybrids come in different sizes).

The chinese ones also come in 100x600x300. Im sure this has to flow good hp. As for big name brands vs chinese ones...havent seen a comparison. All I know is that I had a jap one on my car, changed to chinese one and made an extra 30hp at the same boost setting blah blah. Still, I think that trust and the like have to make good products...but I would love to see a comparison of the intercooler I mentioned above and all these other expensive coolers, I reckon the difference would be very very minimal under 400rwkW. Ofcourse for anything above this, I dont think you can buy chinese 6" thick coolers like trust make so cant compare here and yeah you can only conclude that for high hp only the name brands are the go. There is not enough demand for 1000hp chinese coolers so they are not made. Could be wrong. I just would love to see a back to back test for interests sake.

    • But first....while I was there, I also swapped across the centre console box for the other style where the AV inputs don't intrude into the (very limited !) space.  Part# was 96926-4GA0A, 284H3-4GA0B, 284H3-4GA0A. (I've already swapped the top 12v socket for a USB bulkhead in this pic, it fit the hole without modification:) Basically to do the console you need to remove the DS and PS side console trim (they slide up and back, held in by clips only) Then remove the back half of the console top trim with the cupholders, pops up, all clips again but be careful at the front as it is pretty flimsy. Then slide the shifter boot down, remove the spring clip, loose it forever somewhere in the car the pull the shift knob off. Remove the tiny plastic piece on DS near "P" and use something thin and long (most screwdrivers won't fit) to push down the interlock and put the shifter down in D for space. There is one screw at the front, then the shifter surround and ashtray lift up. There are 3 or 4 plugs underneath and it is off. Next is the rear cover of the centre console; you need to open the console lid, pop off the trim covering the lid hinge and undo the 2rd screw from the driver's side (the rest all need to come out later so you can do them all now and remove the lid) Then the rear cover unclips (6 clips), start at the top with a trim tool pulling backwards. Once it is off there are 2 screws facing rearwards to remove (need a short phillips for these) and you are done with the rear of the console. There are 4 plugs at the A/V box to unclip Then there are 2 screws at the front of the console, and 2 clips (pull up and back) and the console will come out.
    • So, a bit of a side trip, but one that might be interesting for people with JDM cars and japanese head units. I know @Pac previously posted about a carplay/android auto adapter he installed which used the AUX input, and @V35_Paul put in one of the Tesla style units that replace both screens. The option I went with was a Lsait LLT-YF-VER5.87_2 (https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Lsailt-8GB-Android-Multimedia-Interface-for_1601187633672.html). Price was $1,150 for a single unit although they are much cheaper if you are willing to buy 2....$857ea. Make you you get the version 2 not version 1, it is faster and has a better UI - this is the manufacturer listing: http://www.lsailt.com/product/348.html. BTW if you've never bought from Alibaba before, don't be concerned....these guys can't stay in business unless they are responsive, ship fast etc, they were excellent (probably faster shipping than most local places) So, this was my task for a lazy Sat afternoon....looks complex but was all done in a few hours (it probably helps that I had some of it apart before so it was a bit familiar). I also decided to add a HD USB drive recorded at the same time and the unit also supports an aftermarket reverse cam (if you don't want to retain factory) and also AV in and HDMI out It looks much worse than it is, in fact in was genuinely all plug and play (no custom wiring at all). This video was pretty good (skipped a few steps), unfortunately they are an Aussie seller but no longer sell this unit (I guess Carplay/AA adapters are easier to install and much cheaper) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5hJfYOB8Dg
    • That still isn't a lot to go on. I don't have a Y50 Fuga Head Unit wiring diagram. I can say that a lot of nissans of that age shared head unit plugs, so if you are in Australia something like this would probably help: https://aerpro.com/app091# You plug that into the car loom, then either plug the head unit ISO into that (if it has ISO), or you buy and ISO adapter harness that you wire in. Bit of stuffing around, but once you have ISO its easy to change things in future.
    • It is a kunfine Android screen . Does anyone know the wirering diagram of the fuga ??
    • just an update to this, poor man pays twice  Tried sanding down the pulleys but it didnt do the trick. Chucked another second hand alternator in the na car which I got for free off my mate and its fixed the squelling. Must have been unlucky with the bearings.    As for my turbo car, I managed to pick up a cwc rb alternator conversion bracket + LS alternator for 250 off marketplace, looked to be in really good nick. Installed it , started the car and its not charging the battery.... ( Im not good with auto elec stuff so im not sure if this was all I needed to do but I verified such by using a multimeter on the battery when the engine was running and I was only getting 12.2v )   I had to modify the earth strap for the new LS alternator , factory earth strap was a 10mm bolt which did not fit the bolt on the LS alternator which was double the size so I cut it off , went to repco bought some ring terminals that fit, crimped it onto the old earth strap and bolted it up to the alternator , started the car and same issue. Ran like shit and was reading 12.2 at the battery.  For a "plug and play" advertised kit thats not very plug and play but alas.  My question is , am I missing something ? Ive been reading that some people recommend upgrading the stock 80 amp alternator fuse to a 140 amp but I dont see how that would stop the alternator charging especially at idle not under load.  Regardless ive pulled it out and am going to get it bench tested by an auto elec tomorrow but it would be handy to know if ive missed something silly or have done something wrong.
