Noise is a funny one,How can they sticker us for noise when they let Harley Davidsons get away with it?

Thats right. I have been pulled over and had to produce my exhaust permit, and yet you can hear those things coming from miles away.

with neons, they have to be hidden from view, and not able to reflect off any chromed surfaces, they are also to be all of one colour, and not to flash. and linking it with the car lighting, your not allowed to have red lights displayed at the front of your car, so technically that rules out red neons. now to link it with emergancy vehicles, red/blue lights fall under police/ambulance lights, and now western power vehicles with orange lights are emergancy vehinces too(99% sure) so technically that rules out red/blue/orange, and then you are not allowed to display white light at the rear other than the reverse lights, so techincally again white, red, blue and orange are ruled out as colours for neons.

Has this changed recently?

I had red neons under mine (until the rear stopped working), and I have been pulled over a couple of times and thats what they said...that red and blue lights are reserved for emergency vehicles, although I am not sure how they could mix up undercar neons for flashing lights on a roof. Anyway, both times they took my phone number to find out for sure and let me know and I never heard from them both times. So I assumed that they were mistaken if they did bother to call the technical department.

I do know that to be legal the tubes cannot be visible to other drivers, and they cannot pulse etc as Mitchy says, but mine was connected to my light switch with an override and there wasn't any problem with that.

I am pretty sure that for WA rims are not supposed to larger/wider than 2 inches from that stamped on the tyre plackard. So if it was stamped with 16 x 7, then you could go up to 18 x 9, but not sure really how strict they apply those rules.

...I think the standard noise level limit for exhaust is something like 92db or 98db...but there are guys out there with a lot louder, like mine is 102db and I got a mod permit for it, and there are others louder so dont know how strick they are on this.

They are however very strict on ride height. Lowest part of the body must be at least 100mm off the deck, and/or headlights minimum 500mm off the deck, whichever comes first.

In terms of other mods there seems to be big grey areas too. I have a atmo BOV that passed, the inspector just said I need a permit for it, so I got it added to the list...easy as that, where as others have said that they are illegal.  :D

rim DIAMETER can go up 2" from the largest factory option, but width follows my previous post, ie 7" max unless wider was a factory option.

im pretty sure the rear seat windows can be as dark as u want, and only the front 2 windows and back screen need to be the 35% limit.

like a panel van or wagon can paint there rear windows (except rear glass) black if they want.

I had a (R31) wagon with 20% tint all round, when I got a sticker Warwick pits said I had to take ALL the tint off.

I had bought an R31 sedan the same day that I got the sticker (got the sticker later that night) swapped the font and rear door windows, left the rest of the tint on and went to Midland pits. The guy said it was meant to be 35% all round, and couldn't be darker, even if it was a wagon, I asked what about vans and Pano's and he said they could do it because they where classed as commercial vehicles. He still passed me though :D

I would take some of the claims in the first post with come caution, seeig as they think a n external gate is a BOV... I would rather hear something from the DPI, in plain english

the CF ...cars have to be older than 1993..that's when they change the law making Cf illegal....

pod filters have to be secured...

BOV cannot be atmospheric has to plumb back...

also FMIC cannot be water cooled...

Atmo BOV will get passed at the pits, as long as they do not produce to much "noise"

which is totally up to the discretion of the inspector

just disengage the BOV when you go over the pits resulting it the noise coming out through the air filter all muffled

just make sure you get a permit for it

and on that note, if you have a permit mod, dont keep the original in your car as the cops have a tendancy to rip them up

Does anyone know why you aren't allowed to have tyres wider than 9", and also why the front tyres and the rear tyres have to be the same width? As long as nothing is brushing or touching anything I can't see any reason why they are illegal, like from a safety perspective or something.

apparently you are only allowed to increase the Track of your car by 25mm which is stuff all

my rims increase my track by like 2 inches if not more

Ok, so some of you may think I am speaking shit, cos what I am about to say will fly in the face of what some people have posted here, meh.

I just had my rego transferred from SA to WA, the following were found to be legal

17.10 inch rims rear, 17x9 front, both were measured - the only thing the inspector commented on was the width of the tyre - had to be correct for the rim (they are slightly stretched, so he checked), he also checked the track, as I have widebody rear and pumped front guards. He also pointed out I had some rubbing under the rear, I told him that is why I got the adjustable rear camber arms and he was happy.

They will not give a permit for exhausts or suspension. I had coilovers and adjustable arms fitted, no problems, but he also wouldnt give me permits for them - he said 'they are either legal or not' Same for my wheels.

Car legal exhaust is 90db, MC its like 98 or 100 or something, but louder than car, truck is also louder than car.

Guages can be fitted to the A pillar, but must be fitted in a manner that they will come off if you hit your head on them, or out of head impact range.

I also got permits for Bride seats, centre gauges, steering wheel and handbrake cover. He didnt bother giving me one for the shift knob. I also got permits for intercooler and piping, manifold, catch can, front and rear strut braces and pod - basically all the aftermarket looking bits.

He (the inspector) said he doesnt normally give permits for pods (or exhausts :) ) anymore, but as a couple of guys had been through recently with defects for pods, so I got one off him for it (he was also bitching about cops defecting cars who didnt know what they were doing.

I was also told pre 1996 cars can have c/f or fibre glass bonnets, as they predate ADR front end crash test requirements. vents are ok, as long as they have mesh (to stop fingers). The bonnet must also have a double latching system (as the factory one does).

Do yourselves a favour, if you have mods, get permits, its pretty easy, and I found the guys very reasonable. Its cheaper to spend $30 for a mod permit, than it is for a full inspection. (can save heaps of dramas too)

Oh, and I laminated my permits too :P

I love it over here, in SA, a car has to be practically completely factory to pass, including ride height.

    • Well, I can recommend the partial AV system translation CD I ordered from Car Audio Workshop in NZ. Whilst it didn't address the date issue, it has conveniently translated on-screen menu items into English, and now allows the GPS-received time to be offset in hours rather than minutes, so I can display Eastern Australian time accurately ( and bump it by another hour when daylight savings starts ).
    • Yuh, if it's 45°C outside, my car is driving in it.
    • I'd be curious to hear more. Otherwise, have you driven a modern x-trail? I wonder how it compares. Here in Australia they are/were popular for rentals and fleet vehicles. I have been in some and my impression was they are bad. But, this may have been very different in the 2000s at a good trim level. Twenty years is plenty of time to make the model worse. I do very much agree with the 2 silver cars in the garage approach. But, not driving because it's too hot would not leave a lot of time in the year for many Australians. I don't think you need to worry too much unless the car has actual issues with overheating. 
    • Back again. I returned to Japan in Jul/Aug to spend time with the car on my birthday and remind myself what all the sacrifice and compromise is for. It happened to line up with the monthly morning meet in Okutama, which I have been wanting to go to for a long time. It's a unique event at a unique spot with really rare, interesting, and quirky cars. It's where all the oldheads and OGs gather. The nighttime scene at DKF certainly has its place and should be experienced if you're into cars, but there's too much bad attention and negativity around it now. IMO the better time is Sunday morning at DKF or Okutama; it's more chill and relaxed. I'm glad I was finally able to go, but not sure it's worth the drive from all the way from Nagoya immediately the day before, unless I was already staying in Tokyo for the days right before the meet, because you have to wake up quite early to make it in time. Funnily enough though I didn't drive the car all that much this trip because it was just too damn hot. While there were zero issues and running temps were nominal and the A/C was strong, RBs already run crazy hot as it is. Sure, it took it all like a champ but something about driving these cars in the ridiculous heat/humidity bothers me and makes me feel like I'm asking too much of it. I'm just me being weird and treating the car like a living thing with feelings; I'm mechanically sympathetic to a fault. Instead I was mainly driving something else around - a KX4(silver) 2001 X-Trail GT, that I acquired in May. There's a few different flavors to choose from with Xs, but visually it's the Nissan version of the Honda CR-V. Mechanically it's a whole different story as this, being the top-trim GT, has an SR20VET mated to a four-speed auto and full-time AWD! It was a very affordable buy in exceptional condition inside and out, with very low mileage...only 48k kms. Most likely it was owned by an older person who kept it garaged and well-maintained, so I'm really happy with how it all worked out. It literally needs zero attention at the moment, albeit except for some minor visual touch-ups. I wanted something quirky, interesting, and practical and for sure it handily delivers on all three of those aspects. I was immediately able to utilize the cargo and passenger capacity to its full extent. It's a lot of fun to drive and is quite punchy through 1st and 2nd. It's very unassuming -in the twisty bits it's a lot more composed than one would think at a glance- and it'll be even better once I get better tires on it(yes, it's an SUV but still a little boat-y for my liking). So...now I have two golden-era Nissans in silver. One sports car and one that does everything else; the perfect two-car solution I think👍 The rest of the trip...I was able to turn my stressed brain off and enjoy it, although I didn't quite get to do as much as I thought. I did some interesting things, met some interesting people, and happened into some interesting situations however, that's all for another post though only if people really want to know. Project-wise, I went back to Mine's again to discuss more plans and am hoping to wrap that up real soon; keep watching this space if that interests you. Additionally, while working in the tormenting sweatbox that is the warehouse, I was able to organize most of the myriad of parts that my friend is storing for me along with the cars, and the 34 has a nice little spot carved out for it: And since it can get so stupid hot in there, that made it all the more easy -after I was standing there looking at the car and said 'f**k it'- to finally remove all the damn gauges that have mostly been an eyesore all this time. Huzzah. The heat basically makes the adhesive backing on the gauge mounts more pliable to work with, so it was far less stressful getting this done. I didn't fully clean it up or chase the wiring though; that will happen once I have the car in closer possession. Another major reason to remove all that stuff is to give people less reasons to get in my car and steal s**t while it's being exported/imported when/if the time comes, which leads us to my next point... ...and that is even though it's time in Japan is technically almost up since it's a November car and the X would be coming in March, I'm still not entirely sure where my life and career is headed; I don't really know what the future looks like and where I'm going to end up. I feel there's a great deal of uncertainty with me and as a result of that, it feels like I'm at a crossroads moreso now than any point in my life thus far and there are some choices I need to make. Yes, I've had some years to consider things and prepare myself, however too much has happened in that time to maintain confidence and everything feels so up in the air; tenuous one might say. Simply put, there's just too much nonsense going on right now from multiple vectors. Admittedly, I'm struggling to stay in the game and keep my eyes on the prize. So much so in fact, that very recently I came the closest I ever have before to calling it quits outright; selling everything and moving on and not looking back. The astute among you will pick up on key subtext within this paragraph. In the meantime I've still managed to slowly acquire some final bits for the car, but it feels nice knowing there's not much left to get and I'm almost across that finish line; I have almost everything I'll ever want for my interpretation and expression on what it is I think an R34 should be. 'til later.
