  1. it will be something silly and simple.. i once completly missed a massive cut on the inside of an intercooler hose where it goes through the body.. check all the clamps, vacuum lines, everything.. didnt find it till i removed the whole intercooler.
  2. i wouldnt start jumping to oil pump conclusions just yet... it wont stop the engine running... well not yet.. id be looking more at the top end.. sensors, injectors, connectors, etc. AFM is a good place to start as its really common to fail and cause dramas. clean all your electrical connectors with carby cleaner, and clean your throttle body aswell.. may be gummed up in there. remove one of your vacuum lines at each end of the manifold and spray a bit of carby cleaner in there.. when you see what it does to your throttle body you'll see why. put some injector cleaner in the fuel tank next time you get fuel.. and heres a good tip... get another bottle of injector cleaner.. warm the car up.. remove a vacuum line (make sure its vacuum) and slowly and gently put the end of the vacuum line into the bottle of injector cleaner.. this sucks injector cleaner through the manifold, over the valves, through the chamber, and out the exhaust... it gives everything a bit of a clean out... it will blow lots of white smoke and misfire a little bit but thats normal.. so dont do it in your garage. you'll have to rev it up so it doesnt die, so you may need some help.. you only want the vacuum line to sit above the cleaner... so it can only suck a little bit. it could also be an air leak... go over your vacuum lines, intercooler lines, etc... check them all.. you can also use carby cleaner test to check manifolds... just spray carby cleaner around the manifold joins, if the car dies down a bit, then its sucked the cleaner in through the gap... most likely though will be the air flow meter.
  3. GTR THROTTLE BODIES FTW!!!.... what else is inside eh??
  4. EPIC FAIL!!!!!!!!!!! j/k.
  5. if it blows smoke on WOT, its usually rings (oil coming past the rings).. if it does it at idle, its usually valve stem seals (vacuum sucking it through the seals). a genuine nissan VRS kit - Valve Regrind Service - which is all gaskets from the head up, can be found from a few sources for around $250.. this comes with everything you need to strip a head right down.. but replacing the valve stem seals is done from the top side of the head.... take the cams out, get a valve spring compressor and remove the springs, then you can get to the seals real easy... do the seals, put the springs back in, the cams back in, the covers back on, and your done. possibly take you or your mechanic half a day at a leisurely pace. if its piston rings, its going to be a bit more.. obviously the engine has to come out.. sump off, head off, pistons out.. the problem here is... once you pay for/do all the work to get to this stage.. you mayswell do the bearings at the same time.. which is around $250 for ACL rod bearings and the same for mains i think.. and you dont want to put them in and have it be out of spec... so you send your bits n pieces away to be checked and machined.. at this point, it wont be much more to get a bit of lightening and balancing done.. now youve got a nice block, all machined up, and new bearings and rings.. and you think, well... nows a good time to put some forgies in it, while its all out, then ill have a really nice engine... throw in some RB26 rods which are a bit stronger than 25 items.. bolt it all up and you'll have a rock solid bottom end... good for 300+kw. but overall it cost you a shite load more than you wanted.. and more than dropping in a good 2nd hand engine. while all your engine work is being done, you sit down with your head and do a little bit of work with the ol die grinder... just clean it up a little, get the valve seats re done, do the manifolds to match the ports.. and before you know it... youve got a nice tidy head, to go on a bulletproof bottom end, that will last you for many many years at a decent power level. thats how rebuilds go haywire and cars are off the road for a year or two... and why big turbos end up on previously sedate cars... people just cant stop when rebuilding, and the engine is good for nice power, so they throw on a nice turbo... which then comes all the other stuff... fuel system, clutch, ecu, etc. etc. but honestly... apart from the machine work... there is nothing on an engine that cant be done by you, at home... its all just bolts.. read the service manual and follow the destructions and you can put your engine together with a bit of patience, a few normal tools and a few special ones for measuring and tightening.. its nothing spectactular. cheers Linton
  6. hahaha.. "i have a friend, his name is animal, dont worry bout his name, he's not a cannibal, he's always happy, he's got a grin... have you seen him.. he's Animal ch-ch-ch-chin!" ill be there sunday so we'll find him... is johnny rad there too?? dont want to miss his gig... you guys are gelling.
  7. just cut some hoops bro.. do some fully hectic skids and check the different colour smoke... you could lots of different smokes though, clutch smoke, tyre smoke, fuel burning smoke, unburnt fuel smoke, burnt oil smoke, unburnt oil smoke, coolant smoke/steam, etc... so yo'll have to do lots of hoops to figure out what it is... you can tell by smelling aswell.. so you have to straddle the door and be half in half out or have the door open. if you get blue smoke.. dont worry about a compression test or anything, just hit it with a hammer till it goes away, if that doesnt work, use a bigger hammer.. if that doesnt work, youve got an electrical problem. hope that helps... Linton
  8. if it can go over a coke can on its side... its still to high... flat coke can FTW!
  9. ohhh thhtop iiit!
  10. tops.... might have to check that one out as i was going to rebuild my rack and move some lines around anyways. its like S chassis were made for drifting.
  11. what is the benefits of that?? ive not heard of that one yet?? do tell!
  12. 2 things comes to mind in that post 1: and 2: coz you are the only gay in the village fatz.
  13. top work mate, this looks so much better than the giagantic smooth and shiny ones.. they dont suit the rb20 at all.. this look nice and factory almost. cant wait to do something like this on mine.
  14. disagree... salesman here at work used a patrol 4x4 turbo diesel to tow machines around... went through turbos like nothing else and eventually blew the engine... plus noisy and not very comfortable.. prado grande's are the shiz... not the best, .. like a 120ser v8 cruiser.. but pretty damn comfy and quiet.. grande is top notch... well done fatz.. just dont throw them around corners... they chew the outside of the tyres.. and 17" 4wd tyres arent cheap... and no you cannot put 16s on it.. sooo many tightarses have asked me if you can change the brakes and shit over to hilux stuff so you can put 15" hilux wheels on..
  15. Gold, Terry.... GOLD!
  16. i thought that with articles like the japanese events they were up to date and fairly recent... but feature cars and random articles are just slotted in when they can??
  17. i cant believe its not out yet! i got it ages ago.
  18. how did i miss this one... damn rotarys suck thread...
  19. what sort of paint is that on the covers?? looks fantastic!
  20. subaru should team up with ford.. and have the same shape WRX as the new focus.. that thing looks cranky.
  21. been there, done that, was it front or rear hit?? if it was a rear hit... he was doing something very silly in a car that wasnt his.. id be finding a new mate if that was the case.. mates dont do that to mates if it was you though, you can say it was you, i put mine into a gutter... front first, under steer coz lhf tyre pressure was low.. came around funny corkscrew corner bit too quick and off she went.. everyones been there and done something silly.. no shame in it. busted steering knuckle, control arm, castor rod, brake line, coilover, and cross member.
  22. LeCoq it Bishes! now... where did i put that shovel... i seem to have got myself into a hole..
  23. i dont know what it is but these new school swoopy cars just dont do it for me... the 350z, the 370z, the R35 GTR... sure they look nice, but they dont look tough.. not like the old school stuff.. they look too pretty, and i dunno, it just doesnt look like a snappy rwd car, it looks heavy and lethargic, with too many electronic gadgets to make driving/modification any fun.. if i had the choice of this or the original ae86... original all the way.
  24. do you also think rb26's sound shit?? coz ive heard a few 13b's that sound like rb26's. and... if your car accelerated like this one... do you really think you'd care how it sounded?? or would you care if other people care about how it sounded?? i know i wouldnt..
