Please explain dif between Internal & External gate
T0nyGTSt replied to Abo Bob's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
The problem with ext. wastegates is COST and SIZE. A GT-R cannot usually run ext. wastegates unless it's a single conversion. You also need the cost if manifold, gate + usually dump pipe. + injectors, ECU, boost, etc. etc. T. -
ANY Clubman is not cheap (unless of course if you try a "Locost" version but you need serious skills). At the moment, I can't think of anything cheaper than an MX5. Bit of a downer from a GT-R though. T.

33 Gtst or 180sx HELP!
T0nyGTSt replied to the_consumernator's topic in R Series (R30, R31, R32, R33, R34)
That's my fave 180 pikcha. T. -
I have no problems with a pushrod motor - honestly four valves and twin cams isn't all that but I do draw the line at a Muncie 4 speed or a Toploader and a live axle, leaf rear end. Oh and fuel injection please. If you can squeeze in a T56 Tremec manual + a coil rear end... T.

I like this piece of shit: http://www.thecarplace.com/bullitt.htm You know that a mildly modded Skyline would knock it into the next suburb in every area dynamically. But that isn't the point is it? I don't mind the '68 Fastback in the original "Bullitt" - I might just dig out my DVD right now T.

Viper GTS coupe - dark champion blue with two white stripes down the middle. GTS-R coupe if you wanna die young! T.

My favourite is the 1963 - 1967 split window Corvette Stingray - the Bill Mitchell creation. I think it'll be shite to drive but I'm not talking about that/ Every generation of Corvette has it's chief designer. This 4 year life cycle Corvette is my favourite. I don't like the 1968 - 1982 model. T.

But let me ask you this... For the guys who fancy themselves as 'top guns', that is the circuit guys, the drifters, drag racers, the bosozoku... are these guys any good? I get the feeling that unlike in Australia, where the ricers and bogans get together, they can't drive for shit. But for the Japanese guys who fancy themselves as quite 'a playa', they got the goods to back it up. True? T.

The ZR1 has always been one of my favourite cars of all time. This was the early 90's - only the Germans, Italians and Japanese had mastered the art of the Quad Cam 32 valve v8. These guys lost the war apparently The 'normal' Corvette at the time was the old L98 OHV V8 - the precursor to the LS1 V8 we seen in the Commodore today. The current 'normal' Corvette motor is the LT1. The ZR1 motor is the LT5. I think I'm correct there... once you've actually 'experienced' a Corvette, you realise that the C4 chassis is from 1984 and an 'old' car like the 1989 R32 Skyline makes it look antiquated. Like the Lotus Esprit it's an ancient car in design but there's something very modern, almost timeless about it. The LT5 32valve V8 motor had similar sorts of problems we see in the current LS1 but think of a motor that's twice as complex but a decade ago! In the end, the old OHV pushrod went over the 280kW the 32v valve motor could produce so there seemed no point to it. It does however still live in offshore racing boats - the LT5 was developed by Mercury Marine and Lotus so they sold them at quite high prices to rice race boat owners. I don't think there's more than 6 - 7 - 8,000 ZR-1 Corvettes? At $60,000 - $70,000 a pop when that was a lot of money, there weren't that many takers since it looked so much like a 'normal' Corvette. I'm a diehard McLaren-Honda fan for obvious reasons. I very much prefer the modern F1 era pre-Schumacher. I remember in that era the famed BMW turbo 1.5 four cylinder turbo motor did a massive 1,300hp in qualifying. This engine could trace its roots back to the BMW 318i! Back then the #1 motor was the Honda 1.5 v6 twin turbo - massive power, 'good' power curve, bulletproof reliability. Well it powered the infamous 1988 F1 season! I watch in wonder these days to see how my beloved "McLaren" and "Honda" are doing now... Ron Dennis is having his worse season in living memory... Takuma Sato is blowing up more Hondas than the combined efforts of various VTEC modders (Button seems ok though). In my little universe, McLaren Honda rule the roost while Ferrari gets DNF. I wonder how the 2.4 litre V8 rule will fly? I imagine same power, crap power curve! T.

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 10...
T0nyGTSt replied to Rezz's topic in General Automotive Discussion
I don't necessarily agree - Lancers are by and large, shitty cheaply made economy boxes for univerisity students and middle aged women... oh and ricers But Evolutions have a strong racing heritage easily comparable to GT-R's. I wouldn't be spending $75,000 on an EVO but to the people that matter, the EVO will always stand way above a 'normal' Lancer. T. -
Peter is quite a nice guy - had some work done on my car there. IMO he's not cheap but then again if you want cheap, there's always that place Eaktcy mentioned. I'd rather pay a little more and get things done right first time. T.

Tips against Cars being stolen?
T0nyGTSt replied to Viscount's topic in General Automotive Discussion
Well no one can protect against a gang who are using a flat bed. Even with a multipoint immobilizer, all they need to do is smash a window, release your handbrake and winch it in. No-one would even lift a finger if they saw it happen - why would you? I wouldn't risk my life for YOUR car. I reckon park only where you know it's gonna be safe, also in bad areas perhaps pull your ECU or some ecu tricks like that. T. -
New Lightweight Flywheel
T0nyGTSt replied to Bass Junky's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
Mine doesn't like reverse, nor does it like hillstarts. I find I need to almost hit it at 2,500rpm or so; I often sidestep it and make the car squirm sideways. People behind me must find it hilarious. Toda is what I use. 4kg or so? T. -
How come the R34 GT-R often came with just a tape deck?
T0nyGTSt replied to T0nyGTSt's topic in Car Audio & Electrical
The top of the line NSX Type-R has manual window winders, manual mirrors, no radio, no aircon. Interior is suede and vinyl finish. But with the alloy and carbon panels it weighs in at 1,270kg! WRX and EVO weighs more. T. -
It's also one of those jurisdiction things... If you have a pound of weed in your glovebox while you are driving, it's free and clear for prosecution. They can search with provocation. If the car is parked in your garage and they have no warrant, it's forfeited as inadmissable. If you have the pound of weed sitting on your dining room table as the cops come in on a non-related matter, it is admissable as a incidental seizure. I can only see the cops getting more and more cavalier in their approach towards modified cars so I think we're all eventually forced back to more stock performance cars like M3's, s2000 etc. T.

Modyourcar Kristian A few of the import places on special It's usually $150+ T.

Great price. Cheapest I've seen here is $125 new or so. T.

In NSW they can do it in private car parks (McDonalds/KFC/Jacks seems to be popular!) If I was the proprietor of the servo I would tell the cops to get farked... they are on my property, stopping me from making my living. T.

What can you tell me about this turbo?
T0nyGTSt replied to T0nyGTSt's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Could be one of those shops that can do fantastic work on a motor... for the first six months anyway. Plenty of those places in Sydney. With an aftermarket manifold + a wastegate, this turbo ***MAY*** give ok results. Big question marks though. T. -

Try Carlingford Rd. from Epping. Or the M2 exit onto Pennant Hills Rd. Or Marsden Rd. from Eastwood. Masses of parking at the Asian shopping centre; "Tai Kei" - it's ok, Asians respect Skylines and besides, there's more German metal there than Poland in 1939... OR you can try your luck at Carlingford Court (I wouldn't - Skylines go missing there). Oh and there's a whole buncha of brothels on Keeler St. if you're keen. I wouldn't know coz I wouldn't eat the filthy muthaphuqqers... T. -
stiff gearbox when cold
T0nyGTSt replied to letemlaf's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
Redline has the consistency of honey when cold but looks like washing liquid. Mine is hard to get into reverse when cold but really warms up quick as the Redline thins down as it heats. This is normal. T. -
I have a really gay question. I saw an old Monaro on the weekends (not one of the gay current Simcoe designed 2 door Commodores) and it has this really cool feature. It has no B pillars, and the passenger windows wound down. Wouldn't this be cool on a Skyline? I know it's silly but the old Monaros with the flexible chassis has a great 'open air' feel with everything wound down. So a set of electric window motors from the wreckers and an angle grinder? Would work wouldn't it? T.

Gotta love that fuel smell...
T0nyGTSt replied to Redbaboon's topic in General Automotive Discussion
I don't get that... my Mitsubishi Colt petrol cap does me proud. What I do get is a god awful smell from the car if I let it idle too long. Like un-catalysed exhaust. I pity the poor bastard behind me in traffic or when I stand on the go pedal. T. -
What can you tell me about this turbo?
T0nyGTSt replied to T0nyGTSt's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Not off Ebay but I reckon it's the same source (ie. some factory in China). That Ebay one is sold by people who may as well be used car salesmen. T.
