If you're staying in Circular Quay the closest area with a decent night life would probably be the Rocks but that is mainly pubs and restaurants. Wandering a bit further to darling harbour will get you to cargo bar/king st wharf and a bit younger crowd. Kings Cross is a lot quieter than it used to be since the lock-out laws came in but there are still plenty of places open.
