On a whim we decided to build an RB30 and install it in my R32 on the weekend.. a rundown of what we used:

- a prepped block, forged pistons (wisecos I think), rings and 25DE head that had done 5000km in another car.

- standard crank and standard rods out of a quokka special RB30

- 25DE intake manifold

- standard 25DE cams

- 25DE rocker covers

- swapped the exhaust manifold/turbo, fuel rail/injectors etc off the RB20

- New OEM headgasket and a few other little new things from Nissan (oil pickup o-ring etc)

- NDC mains and bigends

- RB25 s1 turbo that I had on the RB20

Block had already gone through a twincam conversion so was drilled/tapped for tensioners etc. We used all the sensors etc off the RB20 and it is currently running on the groupbuy remap from CEF1E.

Bonnet doesn't close properly so I need to sort out the pipework (hitting on the bov and the cooler pipe over the fan) and it could really do with a tune.. got it booked in for the 30th but need to get a z32 afm and some injectors before then :(

What a big weekend that was!! (even had the manson concert thrown in on saturday night!) :P

Will update once tuned :D

Well, after a long wait, I FINALLY got my RB30DET going :P

Stock bottom end, no idea of kms... Was out of an auto VL though.

RB25DET oil pump

R32 RB25DE head with upgraded valve springs (around 70 pounds seating pressure)

GTR injectors

Z32 AFM

Bosch 040

Cheap FMIC

3" turbo back exhaust (HKS muffler)

RB25 turbo + VG30 rear housing

Remapped RB20 ECU

Makes 206rwkw at 10psi

Got my RB30DET powered Silvia on the dyno finally! Just to get it all running and so I can drive it etc before the power run.

Making 250hp, 290ft/lbs on 10psi, this is not revving it over 5k rpm also. So it's going to be making some nice numbers when I open it up, can't wait :P

(ignore the red line in the above graph, that's when we tried 14psi untuned but it started to ping up high)

RB30 w/ 25 turbo

Only difference between the two engines apart from the extra litre are the 550cc injectors and z32 afm (and a minor tune).

AH RIGHT SECTION NOW, SORRY GUYS.

well guys mine went on the dyno as promised. here,s a you tube link, takes a while to load, done by the racing line where i had it mapped..

car ran brilliantly all morning till 1pm. did 20+ dyno runs , final run was @ 2.17 bar 652bhp@the fly 660lbs torque @ 5500rpm

went for dinner and unfortunately left the ign on. when we returned for some light on road mapping car is now knacked beyond a joke,,

change the ecu,cam sensor, ign amp, splitfires, plugs no joy.. wont rev and on the fuel map it stays the same but when you rev it up, and return to same piont on the map that had an afr of 13 now it reads 21? numbers are the same but afr has changed on its own?. lambda,s are turned off so not them. we puit some 4 bar map sensors on wonder if they have burned out?. will start again monday..bernie

Wastegate is HKS 60mm with 2 1/4" screamer pipe with muffler fitted (yes with its own muffler) Detail is posted in other threads

Engine management is stock. Read my other posts for more detail on how I deal with airflow cut...

NOTE that the ignition was breaking down due to too much plug gap (gap set at 1mm)...You can see this in Dyno charts.

May as well post up here, graphs show run-in tune. Will post up again once full tune is complete, may be a few more months though.

Just posting the comparison between my previous rb25 set-up to the new rb30 set-up. First is a power comparison and second is a torque comparison. Can't wait till the full tune :whistling:

1040 strap car on dyno hands wont stop shaking need more coffee.

1050 first run, engine leaning out with new turbo injectors at full duty 18psi

11am change injectors from 740cc to 1000cc sard's

1130 2nd dyno run, alter injector pulse and check a/fr's temp oil pressure fuel pressure all ok

injectors at 54% duty

1150 3rd go, car starts breaking traction at 21 psi 3rd gear, four of us sit in the boot with one on each door sill...power 690 @ all four but nowhere near what i want.

1215 have lunch and sit down chat about the issue of traction and non eventful lower than expected run

1pm gary try's different approch tinkering with timing and loading up the fuel working his magic with the hks f con pro. manifold glows white hot engine takes on whole new angry engine note, everybody grins with expectation.

1440 5th dyno run engine pulls hard the shrill whine of the t51 filling the workshop @ 27psi, smoke starts pouring of the back tyres, everyone piles onto the car, the revs drop and then start to climb again 650,680, 710, 750, 780, 800, 815, 840, tyres start spinning again, gary drops his tools and jumps on the back while craig looks accross at me hanging out the passengers door ,860 870 881 poof! gasket blows, craig

    • I know why it happened and I’m embarrassed to say but I was testing the polarity of one of the led bulb to see which side was positive with a 12v battery and that’s when it decided to fry hoping I didn’t damage anything else
    • I came here to note that is a zener diode too base on the info there. Based on that, I'd also be suspicious that replacing it, and it's likely to do the same. A lot of use cases will see it used as either voltage protection, or to create a cheap but relatively stable fixed voltage supply. That would mean it has seen more voltage than it should, and has gone into voltage melt down. If there is something else in the circuit dumping out higher than it should voltages, that needs to be found too. It's quite likely they're trying to use the Zener to limit the voltage that is hitting through to the transistor beside it, so what ever goes to the zener is likely a signal, and they're using the transistor in that circuit to amplify it. Especially as it seems they've also got a capacitor across the zener. Looks like there is meant to be something "noisy" to that zener, and what ever it was, had a melt down. Looking at that picture, it also looks like there's some solder joints that really need redoing, and it might be worth having the whole board properly inspected.  Unfortunately, without being able to stick a multimeter on it, and start tracing it all out, I'm pretty much at a loss now to help. I don't even believe I have a climate control board from an R33 around here to pull apart and see if any of the circuit appears similar to give some ideas.
    • Nah - but you won't find anything on dismantling the seats in any such thing anyway.
    • Could be. Could also be that they sit around broken more. To be fair, you almost never see one driving around. I see more R chassis GTRs than the Renault ones.
    • Yeah. Nah. This is why I said My bold for my double emphasis. We're not talking about cars tuned to the edge of det here. We're talking about normal cars. Flame propagation speed and the amount of energy required to ignite the fuel are not significant factors when running at 1500-4000 rpm, and medium to light loads, like nearly every car on the road (except twin cab utes which are driven at 6k and 100% load all the time). There is no shortage of ignition energy available in any petrol engine. If there was, we'd all be in deep shit. The calorific value, on a volume basis, is significantly different, between 98 and 91, and that turns up immediately in consumption numbers. You can see the signal easily if you control for the other variables well enough, and/or collect enough stats. As to not seeing any benefit - we had a couple of EF and EL Falcons in the company fleet back in the late 90s and early 2000s. The EEC IV ECU in those things was particularly good at adding in timing as soon as knock headroom improved, which typically came from putting in some 95 or 98. The responsiveness and power improved noticeably, and the fuel consumption dropped considerably, just from going to 95. Less delta from there to 98 - almost not noticeable, compared to the big differences seen between 91 and 95. Way back in the day, when supermarkets first started selling fuel from their own stations, I did thousands of km in FNQ in a small Toyota. I can't remember if it was a Starlet or an early Yaris. Anyway - the supermarket servos were bringing in cheap fuel from Indonesia, and the other servos were still using locally refined gear. The fuel consumption was typically at least 5%, often as much as 8% worse on the Indo shit, presumably because they had a lot more oxygenated component in the brew, and were probably barely meeting the octane spec. Around the same time or maybe a bit later (like 25 years ago), I could tell the difference between Shell 98 and BP 98, and typically preferred to only use Shell then because the Skyline ran so much better on it. Years later I found the realtionship between them had swapped, as a consequence of yet more refinery closures. So I've only used BP 98 since. Although, I must say that I could not fault the odd tank of United 98 that I've run. It's probably the same stuff. It is also very important to remember that these findings are often dependent on region. With most of the refineries in Oz now dead, there's less variability in local stuff, and he majority of our fuels are not even refined here any more anyway. It probably depends more on which SE Asian refinery is currently cheapest to operate.
