hi guys

i have a R32 gts-t. im at the point i dont know wat to do. i have started to get all the parts together to do the rb30det with the rb25 head. but i was thinking the amount of money im goin to spend on the rb30 i could work the rb20 with all the goodies. ill be happy to get about 280rwkw's.

so which engine so i build to make 280kw?

cheers

bill

Unless you are really hands on and can get things done yourself in your backyward...and you already have FMIC, fuel pump, injectors, exhaust etc...then 5k wont get you anywhere near beign able to buy an RB30DET and turbo capable of making that power...not to mention the clutch and gearbox, what sort of life will they have with that sort of power.

Not tryign to deter you from doing it...just do your homework on how much 280rwkws costs

You wouldnt need to rev the nuts off an RB30DET though as it'll pull tree stumps out if its setup right... so there is no "need" to rev it stupid.

To get the RB20 to 280rwkw is going to cost more than 5k

JET - can you list everything that you have already, i mean from clutch to your intercooler to your BOV (even thuogh it dont matter)?

That would give a good indication of where you are now, and how best to get the most of your $5000 as i think 280rwkw is not realistic at this stage, but it depends on the parts you currently have

cheers

i already got most of the things u said i got a r33 gearbox 2. i got a compelet rb25det head & compelet rb30et bottom end. so this is my homework just want 2 find out which will be cheaper 2 set up. i can do all the my self.

how would u be able to get a rb24 from a rb20? change the crank?

Not sure if it was a mistake or not but u said you bought the rb25det head! If you did it will be a bit of a hassle putting it into an R32 as you will need the R33 wiring loom and it will also not look like an rb20 any more!

But as most have said the money you spend on an rb20, if you spend the same on the rb30 you will be laughing. I have spent close to $7000 and should be pushing somehwere between 240-280rwkw's if nothing goes wrong!

RB30 POWER!!!

if you have a rb30et bottom end the compression is going to be far too low. u will need to put NA pistons in it to make it the goods...

so far my rb30det has cost me on the engine alone (turbo, ecu, intercooler, exhaust)

$7000

yea i saw a rebuild kit fot the Rb25/30 setup on the business Section i think it was like $3999, but for sure the pistions will have to be changed to forged ACL.

the kit inc.

ACL pistons

ACL rings

crow rods

main and big end bearings

tomei head gasket 1.2mm

nissan gasket kit

this is kinda my homework so im just geting an idea if 5grand will do the job for the rb30 or the rb20

also would i be able to run a standard ecu and just get it remaped or chiped? coz once i get it tuned i would be playin around wit the settings.

let me know wat u guys think

cheers

seems you have the wrong bottom end AND head.

and hows that? ive heard that the rb25det to bolt up to a rb30 u have to block up or weld up sum of the oil holes in the head coz it will flow to much oil in the head problem solved. as for the pistons in the block they will have to be changed if i want to run high boost levels.

well it would have been easier to get a NON turbo rb30 bottom end and a NON turbo RB25 head from an R32.

then you could save money on chaning pistons, welding and disabling VVT and having the correct sensors to work with the RB20 loom.

with what you have now, you will need the NA pistons (cheap option) or forged bits (expensive option), do all that welding and blocking crap for the VVT on the DET head, and use your 20det bits like AFM and sensors etc.

and since you said you have $5K to spend, It would have saved you some dollars and time is all.

I think $5K "COULD" get you 280rwkw rb30det, but I highly doubt 280rwkw could be had from an RB20 for $5K

What mods does your RB20 currently have?

i havnt really sent any cash on the engine on my r32. ive spent cash on a bodykit and rims + respary. so the rb20det is dead stock. but if u say i could save sum cash and went to work the rb20 for 5k how much rwkw's would i be looking at? since i use it as a daily driver i want it on the raod asap with the less amount of time off road

    • I certainly fall into the annoyed camp, but glad to hear that if it's happening at low boost then I'm not likely going to blow a turbo and end up with metal shards in my oil. Just feels like it prevents me from really driving it without hesitation and "peak" performance. Wonder if it's the VCAM, it did an impressive job of shifting the torque curve and faster spool, but maybe now it's "too fast" and there's too much air for how open the throttle is.  Based on some other threads, will also do some reading on synchronizing the actuators. They are the default actuators that come on the Garrett's and I would think they would be set the same coming from the factory, but if the turbos don't actually work exactly the same way at the same time as previously mentioned, it would be worth making sure the actuators are actuating together properly
    • I went down this rabbit hole before, ended up sourcing a motor from the UK (I'm in Japan) which also didn't function correctly. With the original motor, I disassembled it and reassembled it and it works somewhat, sometimes. What I could deduce from all my screwing around is that there is calibration of the gears on the inside of the motor and two ramps on the main gear which activate switches that operate the motor and move the sunroof either to retract into the roof or tilt. Where I got stuck was that, it seemed in my case that one or both of the switches that are activated by the ramp on the gear did not always activate and thus the motor did not move, causing it to sometimes not retract or tilt (apologies, I've forgotten which way it didn't work.).  Of course this part is discontinued at Nissan now, it's the same part in the S15 but no other models. I also contacted the manufacturer of the component for schematics - forgot the name, they're based in Gifu - but they declined to share the information due to being bound by an NDA, sadly. Looking through my pictures now, it seems I last had a crack at this in 2022. See, I so kindly wrote "open" and "close" next to the switches. If you figure it out, please do tell me. Those little switches, with the red buttons may need to be replaced.
    • It says 300ZX, does that make it an Aus delivered car? Funny how back in the day I just couldn't care less about Z32's and these days I am just in love with them. Back when Nissan was into pushing the envelope. 🤣
    • Hi guys, just after some guidance with an R34 sunroof that has stopped working correctly. It still opens and closes perfectly fine, but it no longer tilts/vents up or down. As a result, the rear of the glass now sags a bit as it drops down slightly in order to retract into the roof, but now it can't pop upwards into a flush position. I’ve probed the pins on the back of the switch connector with a multimeter and it seems like both switches (for open/close and tilt/vent) still work correctly. Any ideas on what it could be, or where I should even start in terms of diagnosing? I'm sure someone's had this issue before but I haven't been able to find anything online relating to this specific issue, most of the issues are with the seals leaking or the motor failing entirely. Thanks in advance!
