Is there anywhere i can look to find a list of what needs to be done to engineer/comply an 89 R32?

Is there any rule to say that you are not able to do much of it yourself and have to get an approved workshop to do it?

So what is the worst case scenario from a cost aspect to comply one. Is there anything that can wrong during the process?

Cheers for any help you can offer

I can do the compliance for your car in melbourne, and can also organise an engineers certificate for around 1000-1100 depending on the car.

Main thing you need to do is remove any Boost controller or BOV's from the car, as engineers and VIC roads are cracking down on them.

Bloodnut I'm assuming you mean compliance under the 15 year rule.

It has to meet VicRoads rego requirements and get an engineering cert. Main thing is the side intrusion bars need to be welded in, check with engineers because when mine was done they would not sign off a cert unless they did the installation themselves. That was in NSW however, I dunno what it's like over there.

Rest of the work you can do in your sleep. Fuel filler, drivers side mirror, etc.

Ok, say its a 16yr old import already in the country, just hasnt been complied and registered. It has a long list of mods and no way it can be taken back to std if thats what is required????

It doesn't have to be standard, but if the mods are things that would normally "attract attention" or otherwise outside Vicroads guidlines the engineer is unlikely to be happy.

Unless things have changed in the last couple of years, intrusion bars don't need to be welded in.....mine are bolted in and engineering approved (89 R32 GTR).

It has to have an import approval under the 15 year old rule, Modifications that need to be removed are the ones that can be identified easly, such as: Roll cage, BOV, Boost controller, etc. in regards to the aftermarket panels such as guards and bonnet its easier if you change it to the standard panels, even you can change them to R32 GTST panels.

i have a modified 15yo import.

cage, seam welding, engine swap, power mods blah blah

i imported it last year under the 15 yo rule and plan on getting compliance soon.

i have done everything myself except for the intrusion bars.

most compliance places want you to put the car back to stock even if it was brought in under the old rule, i have found a shop that isn't to fussed.

i have still raised the susp, and removed the cage, aswell as putting a stock cat back system on and installed a full interior as the car had nothing inside it when it arrived, i'll probably also remove the boost controllerand do a few other litlle things like remove the stickers etc just to make it look a little bit less aggressive.

they are ok with the fact i have done the work myself, and have quoted me 600 to 700 to install the side intrusion bars and sign off on the engineer's cert.

however they also said they will be inspecting all of the work i have carried out myself and if it isn't up to scratch they will have to rectify what i have done.

    • I know people cry at the price of the Getrag 12-14k for a conversion now, but it really is a nice mid point. Not going to get change from 10k on a gearset installed.  $30k++ for sequential.   I know you run the risk of a damaged used one and parts are hard to get but as a street car gearbox its really hard to beat. If you enjoy a more traditional manual, its the choice no question.
