hi how are you all.

i just wanted to know if anyone knew someone around melbourne that can remove broken manifold studs. 6 of the 12 studs have snapped and i need them out of the header as soon as possible.

i have heard of people that can remove studs, tried searching the forums but had no luck!

if you know of people either mobile, or a mechanic shop that can do it and how much they charge, id love to know!

thanks for your time

Dave

most mobile Mechs should be able to do this, depends if they want to, they are tough to get to and tougher to get out, spray CRC on them to make it easier, just a lttle squirt on each one every hour or so, the more the merrier.

i had this same problem with the first stud.. depending on how far in they have snapped, you might have to get them drilled out..

also make sure if decide to drill them out that you are REALLY careful when u get it done, i left this job to a bodgy mechanic and he drilled through the block into the head.. i realised this cause oil started leaking from there recently.. i had to get a thread proffesional to make a bigger hole to fit a bigger stud and seal the whole..

you can drill them yourself (right down the middle of the stud) and buy a device called a stud removed from a place like repco

it goes into the hole and has metal parts that open out and get stuck into the stud. you then can turn it out

if they break though your in dire strife as their metal is incredibly hard and most drills will struggle

hi, thanks for the replys.

i know its a huge job! we tried one stud with an easy out.. wasn't very easy!! didnt continue coz i didnt want to make the problem worse!

my friends dad was a mechanic for years, yet he didnt want to touch it!

I just called "the thread doctor" he will come to me and for the 6 studs removed will cost $120ish + if he needs to fix the one i've stuffed up. sounds good to me coz my cars been off the road for nearly a month now! baught a highflow turbo, manifold and dump... i'll see how it all goes!

Found that typically its always the cyl 1 and 6 studs which will break, top and bottom ones as the heat wants to flex/pull the outside more then the inside, plus from 10-15 yrs worth of hot/cold hot/cold they become brittle and break easily. If your ever taking manifold off, change all of the studs and nuts. Make sure you use proper cone nuts too, dont use nyloc, or plain with spring washers, i shouldnt have to explain why. good luck with the studs.

yea im gonna pay the 'doc' the extra few bob to replace the rest. and im replacing the bolts and gaskets of the manifold, turbo and dump. three at the front and three at the back have snapped, i could imagine how much of a bitch it would be trying to get the middle ones out with the struts in the way..

yay driving 2 cars to the country today (3 hours away) and then towing my car back with one... lucky petrol is like 50 bucks a litre these days :s

whoops i meant $160 for the 6... but im quite happy to pay LOTS more.. i want my blody car on the road

Daves towing service - reasonable rates!

estimated total towning time <4 hours

actual towing time 9 hours!!

long story short:..traffic... got to counrty to find out the trailors winch is screwed... car is very low for shit trailor... country boy(me) can't read maps and heads to geelong insted of essendon :D

omg towing couldn't be so much fun!!!

had the the thread doctor come to me.

i recomend him, he does a very good job! really happy, cheaper than what i expected, cheaper than what he quoted and fixed my mangled one for free!

now its time to put my car back together!! :domokun:

I just had 3 studs removed (cyl 1 top,cyl 5 top and cyl 6 top) tried drilling them out and using a screw extractor but had no luck (even broke the screw extractor off inside the stud) so took it to my mechanic and he tig welded a nut on each of the broken studs, they all came out easy as!!!!cant believe noone else has thought of doing that :P;):D:whistling:

i was gonna organise a friend i know from the country to tig weld mine out.

but i didnt want to wait around, plus theres no hoist at my place for when i put it all back together :(

we were also going to mig weld it, with the pool idea. lots of people have mig welders. if the engine was out, hell i could even do it! but its just too tight. plus theres the chance of warping the head, i know its little but i dont have the money if it ever did f**k up. im sure changing the head would be a cheap fun job!

All well and good if some of the stud is still poking out of the side! Mine's snapped off inside, and there's a little bit left in there. =-[

Noone like the thread doctor in Sydney??

Dont remember the guys name but i had all mine done a few weeks back (HEAPS cheaper than having to have the head pulled off, drilled and retapped like i was going to have done...

As i recall i got change from a $100 bill (incl. new studs to put in :()

The guy drove over in his van, didnt have to take the car anywhere (which was good because it was in pieces)

Action Thread Repairs is the name, PM me if you want a phone #

Goodluck!!!

I added a pic of one of the studs, you can see he didnt drill all the way through any of the studs so nothing inside was touched :D

    • When you crank your car, and hit it with a timing light, can you see a steady crank timing?
    • Oh, forgot to add, A few months ago I was getting mixture codes and the car was using crap loads of fuel. You could smell the unburned fuel in the exhaust, it was crazy strong. Economy was over 17.5 l/100 and usually around 19. I smoked the engine and found a leaky CCV hose which I replaced and then I replaced my two pre cat O2 sensors, I also replaced the MAF. This fixed my mixture codes and improved my exonomy but I'm still 14 - 15 l/100 when pottering about town so something is still amiss. Throttle response is much better and it has more pep but I'd like to know why it's still so thirsty (and I'm hoping that whatever it is gives me a bit more poke).

    • Hello all, currently finishing up a rb25 swap into my s14. Having issues with starting, car has spark (confirmed by pulling a plug and watching it spark), has fuel(confirmed by checking pulse/voltage at injectors all spark plugs are soaked in fuel). Car cranks over and pops into the exhaust with a heavy fuel smell but no attempt to start or run, I have torn the timing cover off and triple confirmed timing, turned the CAS in multiple spots both directions, attempted to start with coolant temp and maf unplugged, checked my fuel lines and made sure they weren’t backwards, checked voltage at cas/injectors/coilpacks, made sure all the grounds in the harness are connected and added a few grounding straps (1 from chassis to block, 1 from chassis to head, and 1 from chassis to igniter chip) I am getting stumped here. As a last ditch effort I made a full grounding harness tonight that’s going to run from the battery and add an extra ground from the battery onto the coil pack harness/igniter chip/ intake manifold/ Wiring specialties harness ground/ and alternator. I’m hoping maybe the grounding harness will fix it here but posting here to see if anyone has any other ideas on what else I can check. My fuel pressure is unknown right gauge will be here tomorrow.  IMG_3206.mov
