I've been told that QFM pads are good for normal street use, so i'm getting a set of these as they are relatively cheap.

I have a track day coming up though, and I thought of getting some RB74's for the fronts. I can't afford DS2500's at the moment so these will have to do. Will having RB74's on the front and QFM on the rears cause any problems? I've heard on the grape vine that it may cause some understeer. Is this true?

I've been told that bendix ultimate are very harsh on the rotors, and give a ridiculous amount of dust. I was recommended the QFM's instead. Supposedly they were co-designed with one of the guys from Racebrakes. Does anyone know whether they are good for spirited street driving?

Yeah a Friend of mine had the qfm pads on his modified WRX and we were at a track day they seemed to go really well. He was happy.

I think those guys can make a number of different compounds for their pads depending on the application.

My friend's were just the standard sort of pad they offer.

They are cheap too.

let us know how you go... no great loss if they are no good I guess.

Um, unless you are getting pineappled for the price of the DS2500's, they should only be $80 more than the RB74's or thereabouts. How much are you paying?

You need to make sure that the friction coefficients of the front pads matched that of the rear pads.

Understeer? No. What an imbalance can do is make either the front or rear brakes lock prematurely & degrade your overall braking performance.

Dusty, yes. Harsh, no. (Compared to what?)

If racebrakes recommend them they are probably pretty good.

Well I must be getting ripped off for the DS2500's then.. $245 for a front pair.

I can get the RB74's for $120!! Screw paying twice the price for something that's surely not going to go twice the amount of time before overheating! :P

hmmm.. ok then... i might have to get RB74's for the back as well.. I might buy some and see how I go at the beginning of the day... If it's causing problems i'll swap them over.

Well I've heard a few opinions that said that they are harsh for what they are. ie. not that good when it comes to track situations (heat wise), but still just as harsh on the rotors as a more high performace pad.

You don't need RB74's for the back. Racebrakes usually just tell you to use a Bendix Ultimate pad or similar as the back brakes don't really do much & you don't need a pad that deals with high temps. If the friction coefficients of what you have matches the RB74's I would be very tempted to leave them alone.

More important than pads is good fluid. So get some Motul RBF600 or equivalent.

Yeah I'm getting the RB74's through BDA http://www.brakedistributors.com.au/

The reason they're so cheap is I'm able to get them for trade, which is handy!

Yeah I've heard that before about the fluid - I had Motul 5.1 in there for the last track day and it was good, although I had crap pads on there so the little fade that I had may have just been because of them. Do you know if the RBF600 is much more expensive than the 5.1?

-- Edit: ignore that last question... I've just found it's just under twice the price http://www.uniqueautosports.com.au/priceli...elist_motul.htm

Fair enough.. I might give it a go this time around! :P

  • 2 months later...

Im interested in trying some DS2500s on the front of my car. I have used RB74 fronts with comp 2 rears, but more recently Comp 9 fronts with the Comp 2 rears.

Have always been happy with them, but ppl keeping touching themsleves over the DS2500s so want to give them a try. Only woudl like to hear from ppl that have used them and hear what rear pad they think works well.

I have 324mm front rotors on my car, and have found the Comp 9 - 2 mix to work really well....so want to be sure the $500 odd im about to spend will be markedly better and not cause bias issues.

What are these DS2500's (sorry moving out from underneath my rock tonight)!

I have just been pricing up EBC redstuff for my 32 GTR at around $250 per end? Are these DS2500'S any better?

The car is just a weekend car (if that) and I am after a track suitable pad.

    • This looks great! Awesome to have the 5 speed with an LSD in this. The Recaro's look like SR2's or SR3's. It's a shame they've been retrimmed as they would have looked sweet in their original colours. I think I'd want my agent to be a little more up front and informative too. I've never imported but I reckon it would make me a little nervous, so the more info the better.
    • Thanks for doing that Duncan! Makes you a good person in my books. We don't get kangaroos or wombats here. But we have bats and it's similar. AFAIK it's often the mums with a baby attached that get hit because they drop lower when starting from a tree. If you hit an animal, check on it. https://www.ifaw.org/au/resources/wildlife-rescue-app An app to get the closest wildlife rescue contact.
    • My dream is also to have a proper hoist, but I don't think it will ever happen. My quickjack is probably as close as I'll ever get, it really is very good though.
    • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
