hi all

i was talking to a bit of a nissan guru the other day about what gearbox to run in my R32 when i do the conversion. he said that rb20 turbo and rb30 NA gearboxes are exactly the same apart from the ribbing on the box housings. so they are week. he then said that i should get a R33 box as they are the strongest. he said that the r33, rb30 turbo box and the navara V6 manual gear boxes are exactly the same.

has anyone ever tryed to fit a manual gearbox out of a navara? or have they ever seen one and been able to say that they are the same box?

i know this is a big ask but any help would be grately apreciated

2wd navara's run the big 5spd aka vl turbo, gtst box when behind vg30de's

I believe it's the VG30E (ie SOHC) in the Navara, and yes the 2WD version uses a gearbox which is similar in size and strength to the R33/VL turbo types BUT the bell-housing bolt pattern is very different and it won't bolt up to an RB block without an adaptor plate (or changing the bellhousing - if possible).

thanks for the HELPFULL posts.

the 2WD version behind the VG30E is the one i ment sorry i didnt expand my question.

so same box on the inside but wont bolt up to an RB without some work

would the gears drop into a VL turbo or R33 gearbox casing?

the reason i am asking is because a mate of mine needs a V6 navara engine and i need a box so we are maybe going to get the engine and box together.

thanks

The gearbox really wont be a cost viable option i dont think... if you get it for $100, then maybe. But even then...

By the time you dick around as SteveL said, with either the bellhousing... i know around the $1500 mark as a mate had a R33-t box modified to suit a 240z... or adapter plate, less $$$ but still a mission

The R33 box could be had for less of an overall cost, and also less time spent working it all out.

As for the internals interchangeable... not sure

does anyone know what ratios the navara box runs?? i figure they would be different to skyline since its an NA V6 3L work truck, not a straight6 2.5L turbo sports car.

Pretty similar probably, the diff is usually where utilities get their short gearing from.

We took the internals of a Navara box and used them in a VL Turbo gearbox once. Can't find the MX7 anywhere, ridiculously rare. For this reason, converting to a VL turbo box is a pretty silly idea.

    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
    • I'm not going to recommend an EBC pad. I don't like them. Just about anything else would suit me better. I've been using Intima pads for a while now.
    • Agreed, and in particular the earth strap that should go from the subframe to the chassis but it often broken or left off. There is a section in the R32 workshop manual you can follow for troubleshooting if you don't see anything suspicious, and depending where you are (there is no location on your user profile) you should be able to get your hands on a second hand replacement unit still if needed
    • Yeah they mention as a R34 for 2.5 Turbo...but then again thos "small" were also for R34 by that different site. But i look into it and that 310mm EBC is for R34 GTT. And by those you linked the specs are the same 🙂    EDIT: I found these on one site here: DBA 4000 series T3 DBA42304S They are 310mm...and it says are for R34GTT...are there good? EDIT2: ok they have pads too.  What "color" should i get for street use? I dont want/need some noisy ones...(and if they are not that dusty that is good too)
    • Yeah, shame. Maybe  driver's carpet is available 🙏. I am waiting for both amayama and nangun to confirm.
