Hello all,

I am trying to find a great birthday present for my boyfriend. I am currently looking for a headunit which is blue and is ipod compatible. I'm not sure what would look good on a R33 Black Skyline. I live in Melbourne, so if you recommend any places to go too, please make it girl friendly...because I don't know the first things about head units or cars lols. I'm looking for something around $500.00AU range.

Any help would be well appreciated. :D:P

how nice of you. I wish i had a gf like you :P

Basically, most headunits have blue lights. Also, most of the upper range ones also have ipod connection.

$500 is quite a lot of money and you can basically get something pretty good for that price.

Strathfield/jbhifi have the sort of okayish ones. those are the sorts of places that you can just pop up to and buy something whenever you want.

You can also pick up bargains everynow and then 2nd hand, but that wouldn't make a nice present hey!

If you want a good quality headunit, eclipse head units have great sound, but they look quite plain.

Alpine make good sounding headunits that look nice.

pioneer are also good.

Then there are the other ones like kenwood, jvc etc.

As a starting point, pop into your local jbhifi or strathfield just to get a feel. **They are usually girl friendly.

As you say you dont know much about them, jump on to the main brand websites and have a look. Most of them have RRP on the site, so that will give you a rough idea on what you will get.

Thennn, once you have picked which one you want, slip on a nice top, wander down to JB HIFI, and ask them for a deal (ie say what you want, and how much you are going to pay for it). No doubt they will be looking at your boobs not the cash your handing over, so you'll walk away with a bargin!

I would suggest that a lot of places are NOT girl friendly being inhabited by spotty fully sik adolescents who will try to bullshit you. It's happened to my girlfriend... :P

$500 will get you a good unit and the sound quality is good from all the mainstream brands these days. I'd also suggest hopping on the various websites (Sony, Pioneer, Alpine, JVC, Kenwood etc) and getting some idea of the models you're after, then go into the shop and be definite about what you're looking for and actually use the unit. It's good you want it to be compatible with an iPod, that'll narrow things down a bit.

Some look good and are easy to use with simple knobs etc, others look crap and are covered in tiny buttons, very hard to use in a bumpy Skyline.

As for the suggestion about a wearing a nice top..... that's up to you........ :D You'll probably get a better price too if you seem pretty sure about what you want.

Good luck!!

Wow what a girl.. lol lucky boy u have there..

There are heaps of brands out there that will do what you are askin in you budget and you will get different recommendations from everybody..

In Melbourne no one is going to beat Jb's prices and now that they will be carrying Alpine as well no one can beat their range either..

A few more things to look for is additional rca outputs for future system upgrades.

One with the lot that will do almost everythin would be a jvc kd-g 825, it has usb port on the front for your usb flash drives, remote control, custom display with broad range of colours, and with the optional ipod apaptor it should be close to your budget. If u need advice on other models or brands feel free to ask me. :D

if you want the best price without getting raped up the arse like you will get when you walk into jb,strathfield and so on

go to ebay.com.au!

i got my pioneer 5850mp deck with postage for $270 in jb it is selling for $450 you should go for the the pioneer 6000 series it has blue lights! and looks really good (350-400 ebay) or 600 at jb/car audio place, most decent pionners are ipod compatible but remember you will have to buy an ipod car kit thing, these sell for around $150! (rip off but then again you have an ipod so need i say more)

if i were you i would screw the whole idea of the ipod thing and just use the head deck, ALL PLAY MP3 CD's so who really cares.

if that sounds like a crap idea maybe go for a jvc single din sized dvd player get the screen/monitor later and just use the fact each dvd holds 4.7 gig or around 1000+ mp3's.

when buying off ebay make sure you are buying from someone in australia, they have a good rating and the fm frequencies will work in australia....who cares about am

the smaller headeck is the 6000 series, the second is another type they are both worth just over 400 including postage in my opinion they booth look "fully sick"

just remeber to get one that has mp3 and 3 rca outs and a good EQ. as for ipod adaptor you will have to buy it as an extra most are know ipod ready but you more then likley you will still need an adaptor. the adaptors are around the $200 mark from memory.

Maybe a gift voucher from JBHifi or something? Would make your life easier!

Not as personal though...

I have a Kenwood KDC6029, which retails for around $350 I think. Blue/purple lighting, 2 pairs of RCA outs, optional iPod cable, plays mp3's from CD... and not too difficult to operate. My gf is now "sole owner of the remote" in my car. ;o)

Pity her iPod is too old to support modern connections. (first gen)

I just posted about SONY CDX-V6800 as a good option - but I just realised that the Aussie Sony options are more restricted and this particular model isn't offered over there.... sorry - you could try this one instead....

Pretty good val at the moment is the Kenwood KDC-MP4033

It's got a blue display - MP3, CD, CDRW etc - Ipod or MP3 input via cable attached to the rear of the unit (good for hiding cables)

$239 at Autobarn

Use the rest of the $$ on yourself ! >_<

  • 2 weeks later...

I have a Pioneer head unit (can't remember exact model, DEH-P6650 or something - the one with the blue EL screen showing F1 cars and dolphins etc) which I got from JB for around $350. I have no idea about native iPod compatibility but I have been very impressed with it. You can get an RF transmitter for an iPod, no idea what they cost but I know a couple of people who have them, they have a range of about 10 metres and sound pretty damn good.

This sounds like what you're after:

CDA-9856i.jpg

CDA-9856i

Has blue lights, Plays MP3/WMA etc and is equiped with iPod full speed, so you can plug an ipod up to it.

RRP: $469

Ah you got good tastes my friend - thats what I was gonna get if my Sony headunit didnt work well with the alpine speakers/amp/Sub.....

Lovemoreful - any update on the present? which did you end up getting?

    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year.
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
    • Hi,  Just joined the forum so I could share my "fix" of this problem. Might be of use to someone. Had the same hunting at idle issue on my V36 with VQ35HR engine after swapping the engine because the original one got overheated.  While changing the engine I made the mistake of cleaning the throttle bodies and tried all the tricks i could find to do a throttle relearn with no luck. Gave in and took it to a shop and they couldn't sort it. Then took it to my local Nissan dealership and they couldn't get it to idle properly. They said I'd need to replace the throttle bodies and the ecu probably costing more than the car is worth. So I had the idea of replacing the carbon I cleaned out with a thin layer of super glue and it's back to normal idle now. Bit rough but saved the car from the wreckers 🤣
    • After my last update, I went ahead with cleaning and restoring the entire fuel system. This included removing the tank and cleaning it with the Beyond Balistics solution, power washing it multiple times, drying it thoroughly, rinsing with IPA, drying again with heat gun and compressed air. Also, cleaning out the lines, fuel rail, and replacing the fuel pump with an OEM-style one. During the cleaning process, I replaced several hoses - including the breather hose on the fuel tank, which turned out to be the cause of the earlier fuel leak. This is what the old fuel filter looked like: Fuel tank before cleaning: Dirty Fuel Tank.mp4   Fuel tank after cleaning (some staining remains): Clean Fuel Tank.mp4 Both the OEM 270cc and new DeatschWerks 550cc injectors were cleaned professionally by a shop. Before reassembling everything, I tested the fuel flow by running the pump output into a container at the fuel filter location - flow looked good. I then fitted the new fuel filter and reassembled the rest of the system. Fuel Flow Test.mp4 Test 1 - 550cc injectors Ran the new fuel pump with its supplied diagonal strainer (different from OEM’s flat strainer) and my 550cc injectors using the same resized-injector map I had successfully used before. At first, it idled roughly and stalled when I applied throttle. Checked the spark plugs and found that they were fouled with carbon (likely from the earlier overly rich running when the injectors were clogged). After cleaning the plugs, the car started fine. However, it would only idle for 30–60 seconds before stalling, and while driving it would feel like a “fuel cut” after a few seconds - though it wouldn’t fully stall. Test 2 – Strainer swap Suspecting the diagonal strainer might not be reaching the tank bottom, I swapped it for the original flat strainer and filled the tank with ~45L of fuel. The issue persisted exactly the same. Test 3 – OEM injectors To eliminate tuning variables, I reinstalled the OEM 270cc injectors and reverted to the original map. Cleaned the spark plugs again just in-case. The stalling and “fuel cut” still remained.   At this stage, I suspect an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, caused during the cleaning process. This has led me to look into getting Frenchy’s fuel hanger and replacing the unit entirely. TL;DR: Cleaned and restored the fuel system (tank, lines, rail, pump). Tested 550cc injectors with the same resized-injector map as before, but the car stalls at idle and experiences what feels like “fuel cut” after a few seconds of driving. Swapped back to OEM injectors with original map to rule out tuning, but the issue persists. Now suspecting an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, possibly cause by the cleaning process.
