Ok guys another hard question. With say a normal garrett 2860R Compared to a highflowed turbo say for an example an N! high flowed turbos. Which of this makes more power and effecient in delivering it on all RPMs

? If a turbo is high flowed will we be able to source a rebuild kit for it if we needed it easily?

FOr a pair of Garret 2860R brand new will cost $2635+Gst from one of my suppliers. If the cost of high flowing a turbo will cost roughly 2.5k for the pair i rather get the original garret one. But thats just me.

By the way does anybody which turbos will suit a 260rs from IHI? i know the garret one is 2860R for the type of power i want. Probably IHI will be cheaper than the APEXI turbos.

with usual exhaust and induction set up will give an easy 200awkw+

I am waiting for local shop to finish installing a power fc in an auto stagea

then I will be doing the same and hope to tune another 20-30kw's :O maybe 50kw's :teehee:

Taking bets on how long the gearbox will last.

My guess is 2 weeks.

Because if it doesn’t kill the auto in 2 weeks, then it doesn’t make enough power to justify the Power FC is first place.

hehe, and to that I say "not necessarily".

having replaced my turbo with a hiflow unit only slightly larger than the GCG, with everything else stock, the result isn't all good news.

Firstly, I replaced the turbo because of a fault with my original turbo - NOT to gain more power. It was more about needing a new turbo and choosing a direct replacement that also provided more value and potential than just putting another stock 2nd hand one in - plus with a hi flow turbo the internals are brand new and covered by 12 month Garrett Warranty.

But in short the result of this operation was that the car still delivers nice smooth performance and also has more power when on boost. The downside is that there is now noticeably more turbo lag (reaches full boost about 500-1000rpm later) so that translates to a 0-100 time that is essentially the same as before.

Obviously everything about the car is designed around the stock parts so as soon as you change one thing you need to change others to accommodate.

So in summary - the car still drives nice and even gets better fuel economy with a high flowed turbo, but dont expect the extra performance until you give the turbo what it needs - air (ie. bigger exhaust to allow it to flow better and easier)

For anyone looking to go down the hi-flow turbo path - I'd recommend firstly a bigger exhaust, and then some kind of boost control since the exhaust can raise the stock boost level quite considerably, and then some kind of fuel and/or AFM management - eg. FPR / SAFC, and finally you will also benefit from a front mount intercooler to REALLY benefit from the extra boost.

I've done my setup kind of backwards because my turbo died and I needed it replaced - and this does still work, but really needs a bigger exhaust, more boost, more cooling and some tuneability to work at its best.

So just to summarize that the hiflow turbo doesn't really give "free" power on its own...but can certainly make the most of your other mods. :P

yudy id go 2860r's over highflow gtr turbos anyday mate, i had highflows on my old 26 engine setup and they are not even close to as good as the 2860r's from the reports ive seen. one particular gtr in perth makes over 500rwhp with the 2860's and lag is non existant (same as stock turbos). the cost of highflowing was about 2.5k or so which makes it not worth it.

go the 2860r turbos :P

Thank Brad. :( . Through my contacts in my business i was finally able to source a good priced turbos for the Garret 2860R. I think there was 4 specs on the 2860Rs and the rpice differences say between the N1s , 2530 and 2540s are only about ano more than a hundred bucks difference.. So.. Go Garret thats my target now.

Thanks again Brad now im focused for which ones to get noe. Although Tangles mentioned to me Apexi turbos a far better. But trouble is getting spare parts for it and repair kits mught be a problem. Till now i havent sourced any good place that will back the IHI up.

I even go to the lenght of approaching a overseas distributor and they are unable to qoute :P . Probably they didnt have the experience in dealing with this types of Garrett turbos although it might semmed common to us.. Thanks again buddy

dont go 2540s tooo big and laggy for stock capacity rb26's, 2530s only slightly less power but heaps heaps more midrange, trust me have a search of the forced induction area and 2530s are the best choice.

apexi are not that good, garret are better and far cheaper i'd imagine. use proven products and u will be rewarded with a great setup. lag sucks arse i can tell u know, i would choose 2530s over 2540s for sure.

they vary in power by like 10-20rwkw but the 40's lose bulk kw in midrange which is where its most critical. how often do u go full revs in 3rd and 4th gear racing people? the 30s would win down the 1/4 mile because they have better average power.

hope it helps mate, search for posts on the 2860r turbos by the user "pnblight' he is the one who made 530rwhp or seomthing with them and swears by them, plus the threads will give u info on what size 2860's to choose. ive spoken to him in person a few times and he reckons they are best allround turbos on the market by far.

normally during my old days i ould go till the 4th gears and i i think old habits die hard. Cos my style of driving is point and shoot :O . At least hats what my friend said when he was in the car with me when i drove a rnault scenic 1.9ltr TDI against a VOLVO Xc70. If you guys wants to hear to story i can post it in thewasteland thread and its sos funny. But you remember the a post on a clip where the M4 vs audi rs4s. Yea i drive like those guys but far more aggrasive

Man i am going to the wrong places for a dyno tune.... WHere do you get it done for $150?

YOu can get hiflows done from slide for about 700 - 800 (brush bearing) supposedly similar response/spool and similar power to the gcg ball bearing ones..... Has anyone purchased one of these from slide....?????? what are they like????? A PM would be great as i dont get much of a chance to search around these forums..... im thinking about getting one........

MMMM, while I save/buy parts for the upgrades, i think ill put the highflow back on :ermm:

mmm, stock engined stagea with stock exhaust and cooler with higflow, will let you all know how it feels compared to having an exhaust.

haha I could probably guess :(

My car is S2 but with stock exhaust,cooler and a gt30 turbo. Still reasonably responsive, great top end, and very smooth boost buildup etc.

AFR's sit on 11 at the worst and 12 avg so fuel economy is better than stock at the moment - still running factory ecu.

Its an interesting setup, not as responsive as stock so not worth it if anyone thinks this is an 'upgrade'.

The main issues are air-related and fuel-related - as in it really needs a front mount cooler and also really needs a bigger exhaust. AFR's would probably need to be tuned after that but yeah the airflow and air temps are my guess of what you'll notice is lacking.

Let us know how yours goes Alex. :O interesting to know the dyno figure with that setup. my s2 for some reason was recently dyno'd with 100awkw (should be ~120awkw stock i thought) so i'm wondering if this is just because of the turbo or if I have other issues. running 8psi with the gt30 (stock solenoid - high boost mode).

i might need to get my turbo hi-flowed sometime soon coz right now i need to floor the pedal to get any real response from the turbo...under normal acceleration the turbo kinda feels really lagging ...but on 2nd thoughts that might have something to do with AFR's ...maybe if i lean it out just a bit on the low end then the engine should feel more responsive...any thoughts?

    • Place the new daughterboard in the case and mount it using the 3 small black rivets provided, and reconnect the 3 factory ribbon cables to the new board Then, use the 3 piggyback cables from the daughterboard into the factory board on top (there are stand offs in the case to keep them apart. and remember to reconnect the antenna and rear cover fan wires. 1 screw to hold the motherboard in place. Before closing the case, make a hole in the sticker covering a hole in the case and run the cable for the android unit into the plug there. The video forgot this step, so did I, so will you probably. Then redo the 4 screws on back, 2 each top and bottom, 3 each side and put the 2 brackets back on.....all ready to go and not that tricky really.      
    • Onto the android unit. You need to remove the top screen because there is a daughterboard to put inside the case. Each side vent pops out from clips; start at the bottom and carefully remove upwards (use a trim remover tool to avoid breaking anything). Then the lower screen and controls come out, 4 screws, a couple of clips (including 3 flimsy ones at the top) and 3 plugs on the rear. Then the upper screen, 4 screws and a bunch of plugs and she is out. From there, remove the mounting brackets (2 screws each), 4 screws on the rear, 2 screws top and bottom and 3 screws holding in the small plates on each side. When you remove the back cover (tight fit), watch out for the power cable for the fan, I removed it so I could put the back aside. The mainboard is held in by 1 screw in the middle, 1 aerial at the top and 3 ribbon cables. If you've ever done any laptop stuff the ribbon cables are OK to work with, just pop up the retainer and they slide out. If you are not familiar just grab a 12 year old from an iphone factory, they will know how it works The case should now look like this:
    • Switching the console was tricky. First there were 6 screws to remove, and also the little adapter loom and its screws had to come out. Also don't forget to remove the 2 screws holding the central locking receiver. Then there are 4 clips on either side....these were very tight in this case and needed careful persuading with a long flat screw driver....some force required but not enough to break them...this was probably the fiddliest part of the whole job. In my case I needed both the wiring loom and the central locking receiver module to swap across to the new one. That was it for the console, so "assembly is the reverse of disassembly"
    • But first....while I was there, I also swapped across the centre console box for the other style where the AV inputs don't intrude into the (very limited !) space.  Part# was 96926-4GA0A, 284H3-4GA0B, 284H3-4GA0A. (I've already swapped the top 12v socket for a USB bulkhead in this pic, it fit the hole without modification:) Comparison of the 2: Basically to do the console you need to remove the DS and PS side console trim (they slide up and back, held in by clips only) Then remove the back half of the console top trim with the cupholders, pops up, all clips again but be careful at the front as it is pretty flimsy. Then slide the shifter boot down, remove the spring clip, loose it forever somewhere in the car the pull the shift knob off. Remove the tiny plastic piece on DS near "P" and use something thin and long (most screwdrivers won't fit) to push down the interlock and put the shifter down in D for space. There is one screw at the front, then the shifter surround and ashtray lift up. There are 3 or 4 plugs underneath and it is off. Next is the rear cover of the centre console; you need to open the console lid, pop off the trim covering the lid hinge and undo the 2rd screw from the driver's side (the rest all need to come out later so you can do them all now and remove the lid) Then the rear cover unclips (6 clips), start at the top with a trim tool pulling backwards. Once it is off there are 2 screws facing rearwards to remove (need a short phillips for these) and you are done with the rear of the console. There are 4 plugs at the A/V box to unclip Then there are 2 screws at the front of the console, and 2 clips (pull up and back) and the console will come out.
    • So, a bit of a side trip, but one that might be interesting for people with JDM cars and japanese head units. I know @Pac previously posted about a carplay/android auto adapter he installed which used the AUX input, and @V35_Paul put in one of the Tesla style units that replace both screens. The option I went with was a Lsait LLT-YF-VER5.87_2 (https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Lsailt-8GB-Android-Multimedia-Interface-for_1601187633672.html). Price was $1,150 for a single unit although they are much cheaper if you are willing to buy 2....$857ea. Make you you get the version 2 not version 1, it is faster and has a better UI - this is the manufacturer listing: http://www.lsailt.com/product/348.html. BTW if you've never bought from Alibaba before, don't be concerned....these guys can't stay in business unless they are responsive, ship fast etc, they were excellent (probably faster shipping than most local places) So, this was my task for a lazy Sat afternoon....looks complex but was all done in a few hours (it probably helps that I had some of it apart before so it was a bit familiar). I also decided to add a HD USB drive recorded at the same time and the unit also supports an aftermarket reverse cam (if you don't want to retain factory) and also AV in and HDMI out It looks much worse than it is, in fact in was genuinely all plug and play (no custom wiring at all).
