Need some advice

my mate bought a R32 GTR about 3 months ago. got it serviced, some minor things fixed. timing belt was enspected, no need to replace

its got a big exhaust, running about 13psi with stock engine as far as he knows.

few weeks ago he was driving home sedately and the engine just died.

turns out timing belt tensioner failed. no compression. Needs rebuild. but has not been opened up yet.

He's been told by a big name auto place that it will be between 5k and 12k to fix depending on the damage.

what would you people suggest...

considering the bad stories you sometimes hear about crap rebuilders do you's think its the right option? GTRgeoff says he doesnt trust any place and only rebuilds himself.. hehe

instead should he buy a new engine? 12k is remarkably close to a new crate engine.. ??? (15k for N1 right)

or is it just overkill? what about an engine already rebuilt by a reputable workship?

what sort of guarantee would you expect from a shop after having an engine rebuilt or a replacement rebuilt motor bought?

and what do they generally go for?

also, it still has the standard turbos.. should they be replaced incase they fail soon and destroy the engine?

I have read the "report that engine failure" thread and its scary expensive stuff.. i dont want him to spend thousands and have it fail again in 6 months time..

What state are you in?

How long do you intend on keeping the car?

If its a short peroid of time, get a second hand RB26 in and sell the car.

If not, no doubt could recommend some good places to get a reliable rebuild done at a reasonable price.

My engine didnt die but im currently rebuiding it. It is also an RB26. If your in Brisbane i have full faith in JHH Engineering. They doing the machine work for me and i will be building it. I also was faced with the question of re-using the standard ceramic turbos or replacing with steel wheeled items. i chose the safer option of replacing. However i am going to rebuild the ones i have to higher spec thru sliding performance. For $1200 its a pretty good deal. By the way a rebore is $220 forged pistons are about $1000-1400 depending on what you choose. However i am doing all the R&R labour myself so it would be much more expensive to do if your not a mechanic. You'll also want to check the crank as it has possibly spun a bearing or done some sort of damage in that department. A new set of bearings isnt too expensive. Anyway as long as his engine isnt totally destroyed i think he should just rebuild what he has would always work out cheaper...

we are in Adelaide

Dont know.. he's still deciding whether to keep it or sell it when its back on the road..

it would be sensible imo to get it done properly and then keep it long term.. that way your not wasting money on repairing a car for someone else..

but not sure my mate can really afford to do what needs to be done.. or if he's just too pissed off with it to keep it.

If you plan to simply fix and sell, then get a replacement from the wreckers and install it. Otherwise, rebuild the dead one - and ask to talk to previous customers of the engine builder if you have any concerns.

Open it up first and see whats broken/failed

I know of one up here that failed, but if it needed to, COULD be back together with a light hone and new bearings etc which would end up being a lot cheaper than 12k

Same thing happened to my first GTR, engine blew badly, wasnt driving sedately!! I replaced with a R33 engine and sold my blown one, whole thing ended up costing me about $3k all up, pretty good for a nice newer engine and it drove soooo much better after that.

$3,000 for a R33 RB26 dropped in? Thats a steal.

no, he means he sold his own broken engine (let's say for $2K) had new R33 GTR engine bought and installed (let's say cost $5K) the total 'cost' to him was $3K ($5K-$2K=$3K).

What are the kms now? At import you have it at 76,000kms. Was it a rough drive from fresh import?

If thats your car in the link in your sig I'd say you will not find another RB26 in the same condition on the outside. Its not a VSpec is it? I say rebuild yours as you could probably get away with using a lot of the parts on your current engine as well.

    • Bit of an update to this one. Having some issues on the dyno that held us back (boost spiking) and I want to pass some info over you guys and see what you think is wrong with my setup. The current readout on this dyno is 462rwkw on a low reading dyno so keep in mind it is a real world 500rwkw setup on a hub dyno. Don't read into the power figure too much as a sign of the issue. The short and curly of it is: 2.8 Litre Racepace build RB25 NEO N/A Head with VCT (internally standard however ) Borgwarner EFR 8474  Turbosmart 50mm Straight Gate + Mac valve 6Boost Manifold 4" dump to full 4" exhaust (nil restrictions) Wastegate plumbed back in and all angles in the exhaust system are acceptable and not too sharp. GFB SV52 BOV in cooler piping  Turbosmart BOV in EFR Housing   The issue we are having is it comes onto full boost for example at 4000rpm and spikes to 24/25psi, before dropping down to 17psi before slowly rising back up to the target boost of 23psi. It was extremely uncontrollable and the tuner actually had to ramp in boost progrssively with each 1000rpm on each boost setting we selected to try and reduce the amount of spiking. Sometimes we would see a drop of 10psi from the peak at the beginning of the run, to the low, until it took the next 500-1000rpm to stabilise back up to the target boost. The tuner is pretty confident that the straight gate is just a poorly designed product and leaks too much boost upon cracking the gate open and theres no way to fix it other than going to a poppet valve. He's also confient theres no ignition breakdown or floating valves. The fueling is extremely stable as well. Turbo speed is somewhere around the 109,000rpm area. The spanner in the works for me is that prior to this Borgwarner and StraightGate, the car was tuned on -5 twins at a diferent tuner, and he also had issues controlling the boost with it spiking around the same rpm range, so to me this sounds like the same issue and it can't be anything on the turbo side as this was all changed and I think the behaviour is extremely similar, if not the same. We also removed the mac valve and did a run on wastegate pressure and it still spiked and had the same behaviour. My thoughts on possibilities are: Boost Leak VCT Cam Gear isn't reliably activating consistently - (On this however, we did a run with the VCT disabled and the boost still spiked) Turbosmart BOV is not handling the boost? However this seems unlikely to not be able to handle 20psi. I have a couple of logs that I can't make sense of if anybody knows how to read them and can obtain further logs of other parameters if they are not enough, happy to pay for anyones time. The dyno readout with the power figure is the most recent last week. The other picture is from two weeks prior to that where we couldn't break 400kw (we removed the cat), however the issue of the boost control persisted. @Lithium @Piggaz @burn4005 @GTSBoy @discopotato03 I've tagged those that were quite active in recent pages here, no disrespect to those that know turbos well but I missed tagging. • I recently purchased a 2018 Infiniti Q60, which has an SD card navigation map. I can see my system has options for real time traffic updates etc, and am wondering if there is something I can purchase to get this working? I can see there are at least updated maps for USA and Canada, but nothing for Australia. Surely Infiniti took changing road systems and city expansions into account when they decided to use an inbuilt navigation over Android Auto/Apple Car Play, or are we doomed to drive on streets that don't exist in the navigation system if you drive to a new area?
    • Luckily I didn't put in etch primer as I just found out it's not compatible with my body filler lol. Also just need to sand the panel anywhere between 150-400 grit so I'm in the clear there. It does say to not apply to soft old paint, I assume that means paint that is flaking, peeling, etc
    • @dbm7 and @GTSBoy thank you both very much! will give that a shot!
