The monkeys who installed my Catco High Flow cat have installed it in reverse!! There is a giant arrow with "In, Out" printed across the cat as well... Morons!

Does this have a damaging effect on the cat, or is this ok? I'm obviously going to flip it around the right way now, but would the cat have been damaged from running in reverse?

I've noticed a LOT of unburnt fuel coming out my exhaust since i bought the car, but i thought this was normal with high flow cats! Admittedly im running a rich/safe tune though.. Would turning it around make a massive difference, or is it just advisory that you install it in a certain direction?

Thanks guys!

Ok... I see now why they installed it the wrong way around. Basically with the cat around the proper way, the temp sensor wont reach the opening on the cat that its supposed to go into! Dammit!

I'm kind of stuck here unless I can find a way to extend the sensor wire (steel braided line which runs into the floor)... Would it matter if I left the temp sensor disconnected? Is it just for warning purposes or does it serve another purpose?

Thanks for the reply Nismoid.

Instead of doing a dodgey job, i traced the sensor cable back into the cabin, and found where it changed from steel braided to norml electrical wire. I just extended the electrical wire, and bingo - enough room to hook it up.

The problem with leaving it out would have been the hole in the side of the cat... That could have been easily plugged with a bolt though.

Any thoughts on the direction of the cat being an issue?

Dodgey? Its only a temp sensor dash light, which you dont need :ninja:

I wouldnt call it a dodge fix, its the common one hehe.

The direction would be an issue i think, i have noticed some with directional arrows, they must be there for a reason i guess

Fair enough. I guess I'm going to have bigger problems elsewhere if the exhaust temp gets high enough to trigger the warning light anyway! hehe

Thanks for the response mate :ninja:

  • 3 weeks later...

I've been running the cat the right way around for a couple of weeks now, and I have noticed a DEFINITE improvement on the amount of black crap on my rear bar.

I am absolutely certain that it's made a difference as I havent had to polish the crap off my bar which previously I had to do on a weekly basis!

I havent noticed any increase in power, but emissions were definitely affected in my case!!

makes absolutly NO DIFERANCE.

Your a dumb sh!t

Catalytic converters are directional, they work in stages, removing different hydrocarbons progressivley.

Installing it the wrong way will lead to degradation of the material and will probably make you fail emissions.

I've emptied out a cat, and there is no evidence to suggest the material in one end is any different to the other. Unless there is a subtle chemical change which is not visible.

Maybe more modern or advanced ones are like that, but from what I've seen they are simply a honeycomb lattice structure which is consistent throughout.

Yes that is correct, they are a honeycomb lattice structure. However physically they are the same, chemically (in terms of the catalyst) they are not.

    • Yeah I understand you have to pay for an updated map or subscription service or something. But I can't even find a current map for Australia. My map is dated 2017, but didn't this car version still sell in Australia until 2021?   Also, just as an aside, the navigation system warns you of traffic incidences ahead.....why would they include that on a map they knew is not receiving live information. I am forever going to be warned of an incident that probably existed for 30 minutes 8 years ago.

    • sensible choice....and all 32s should be in yellow
    • Run it in open loop for now, and drop the frequency down. This lowers the resolution and requires more duty cycle to do anything, however good to troubleshoot.
    • According to Josh, one of our local Americans, it seems the USA still can't get turbo systems quite right at a lot of places, so possible that they're not running great at all, but they've just not complained as NFI about getting it right...
