Hi guys,

T88Turbo, did you get a Japanese DVD - did it work?

Chris, you wrote "if it says DVD video ont he face of the unit then it supports it." Where abouts on the head unit would this be written? Do you have any pics?

Thanks, Ben.

it will be written on the front on the DVD/nav unit. its locked to japan though so its useless unless you code the DVD correctly.

I'm also working on a PnP solution for those on htis side of the country.

tom,

great idea, poor execution. the later ones run CAN and pulling that board WILL SHUT THE CAR DOWN. tapping the wrong wire will kill something or a CAN module.

the TV tuner is simple cracking that module open is another matter.

Chris,

The screen board as you could see does not have a CAN connection so it will definitely not affect your car in any way.

The TV on the other hand has a CAN connection which I think is only used for diagnostics which can also be run from the Sat Nav unit. Disconnecting the TV will not shut the car down. After all you don't need a TV to run your engine. I wouldn't recommend shorting it out though.

tom,

putting this in for the ones that 'think' they can do this. the later ones are CAN. I know about the CAN lines into the TV unit. those lines also loop through the NAV and toll card.

you and I know what we are looking at - most here probably do not.

Thanks Chris - do you have a picture of what I should be looking for. I am buying a V35 sedan, and it clearly isn't a deal breaker if it doesn't have DVD, but if it did it might be fun to get some Jap DVDs to muck around with.

Do you know if it is a common inclusion on 350GT8 sedans?

I has a japn DVD rom. I put it in my GPS unit to avoid the searching noise every time start car.

Frank350GT - do you mean a DVD rom like a burnt DVD? Does it play?

Sorry for misunderstanding.

What i get is an origional DVD disk of JAPAN map, 2003 version, issued by nissan and xnavi.

If i put it in the DVD-ROM in glove box, the screen will show the jap map. very interesting.

Unsure what you mean here. usually if the pop up screen is there then all of the above is there.

as for the GT8 versions - unsure. most of mine have been coupes.

I'm 90% through a plug and play interface for nav for these so given a bit more time and it will be done. that will take car of the nav.

as for english menus - look at the G35. I'm working on this as well. though I still have a bit more to do there.

all fun and games with these things.

I do. as I said I'm 90% through it now. once I get it fully sorted and tested you will be the first to know. only hting I'm unsure on are the later V35s with CAN driven units. going to try a M35 as well.

Nooooo, please don't say that by "later V35's" you mean the 2005 models.

I think you'll find he does, the 2005 models are different in many ways even though they look the same.

Dami it,

Chris, just think of all the new models that will eventually hit our shores. wouldn't it be great to have a plug in solution ready to go for when they get here. :(

I didnt rule it out. its the CAN stuff thats screws with things. don't worry I'm working on it. I'll need a '05 for a guinea pig as well. not for a few weeks yet. 04 back I have covered. this solution is for NAV ONLY! (I'm sorting the TV another way.)

Please don't forget our M35's please please please. Although you do have plenty of time as it failed emissions testing again!!!!!!!

Cheers

hey guys,

I went over to check out the system that JapLink have got running.. the guy has managed to pass sound and video through to the main unit.. he is using an external gps unit which he claims is off the bmws but it looked like it was some cheap taiwanese rip i think it was called devtona or something.. tried googling but couldnt come up with anything.. the guy is charging $1800 for this setup! He has also managed to pass through a hdtv tuner box to the main unit which he is charging $900 for..

I'm looking at maybe putting together a carpc with a similar setup to this I've had a quick play with roadrunner and it looks pretty robust.. as for the gps im going to have a play with mapmonkey which can apparently display the AUS Destinator maps..

Has anyone tried setting up tv tuners in their cars? I am looking at a few hd car tuners on ebay going for about $100.. I wonder how good the reception is especially while in motion.. any ideas?

no offence here. the VDO units are well into the $1500 mark with maps I know of another cheaper item as well that is loosely $1k. the TV boxes are anywhere from 100-$600 depending on what you want or spec. so it very quickly gets to the $2k mark BEFORE you get someone to put it in place.

to me if you are capable of doing a CAR PC in it - go for it. however if you are the slightest bit unsure - don't try.

the ones I'm doing are setup the same way. audio goes through the main unit. TV is the same. the whole lot will be a LOT easier once I get the plug and play setup done.

would be interested in looking at pics of the car you just mentioned as I have access to a LOT of nav products so I dare say I could find specs on it..

    • I got back to Japan in January and was keen to get back on track as quickly as possible. Europe is god-awful for track accessibility (by comparison), so I picked up a first-gen GT86 in December just to have something I could jump into right away. The Skyline came over in a container this time and landed in early January. It was a bit battered after Europe, though—I refused to do anything beyond essential upkeep while it was over there. The clutch master cylinder gave out, and so did the power steering. I didn’t even bother changing the oil; it was the same stuff that went in just before I left Japan the first time. Naughty. Power steering parts would’ve cost double with shipping and taxes, so knowing I’d be heading back to Japan, I just postponed it and powered through the arm workout. It took a solid three months to get the car back on the road. Registration was a nightmare this time around. There were a bunch of BS fees to navigate, and sourcing parts was a headache. I needed stock seats for shaken, mistakenly blew 34k JPY on some ENR34 seats—which, of course, didn’t fit—then ended up having the car’s technical sheet amended to register it as a two-seater with the Brides. Then there’s the GT86. Amazing car. Does everything I want it to do. Parts are cheap, easy to find, and I don’t care what anyone says—it’s super rewarding to drive. I’ve done a few basic mods: diff ratio, coilovers, discs, pads, seat, etc. It already had a new exhaust manifold and the 180kph limiter removed, so I assume it’s running some kind of map. I’ve just been thrashing it at the track non-stop—mostly Fuji Speedway now, since I need something with higher speed after all that autobahn time. The wheels on the R34 always pissed me off—too big, and it was a nightmare getting tires to fit properly under the arches. So I threw in the towel and bought something that fits better. Looks way cleaner too (at least to me)—less hotboy, less attention-seeking. Still an R34, though. Now for future plans. There are a few things still outstanding with the car. First up, the rear subframe needs an overhaul—that’s priority one. Next, I need to figure out an engine rebuild plan. No timeline yet, but I want to keep it economical—not cutting corners, just not throwing tens of thousands at a mechanic I can barely communicate with. And finally, paint. Plus a bit of tidying up here and there.
    • Nope, needed to clearance under the bar a little with a heat gun, a 1/2" extension as the "clearancer", and big hammer, I was aware of this from the onset, they fit a 2.0 with this intake no problems, but, the 2.5 is around 15mm taller than a 2.0, so "clearancing" was required  It "just" touched when test fitting, now, I have about 10mm of clearance  You cannot see where it was done, and so far, there's no contact when giving it the beans Happy days
    • It's been a while since I've updated this thread. The last year (and some) has been very hectic. In the second-half of 2024 I took the R34 on a trip through Germany, Italy, France and Switzerland - it was f*cking great. I got a little annoyed with the attention the car was getting around Europe and really didn't drive it that much. I could barely work on the car since I was living in an inner-city apartment (with underground parking). During the trip, the car lost power steering in France - split hose - and I ended up driving around 4,000kms with no power steering.  There were a few Nurburgring trips here and there, but in total the R34 amassed just shy of 7,000kms on European roads. Long story short, I broke up with the reason I was transferred to Europe for and requested to be moved back to Japan. The E90, loved it. It was a sunk cost of around EUR 10,000 and I sold it to a friend for EUR 1,500 just to get rid of it quickly. Trust me, moving countries f*cking sucks and I could not be bothered to be as methodical as I was the first time around.
    • I assume clearances were all a-okay?
    • Shock tower brace is in +5Kw....LOL
