Aghhhhh! I can't find the Mobil 1 - 0W40 anywhere! is it the same as Mobil 1 Gold? Spare part shops are quoting me $80 - $90 for 5L... That’s bit much IMO

A few performance shops recommended to try Valvoline SynPower 5W40 and they swear by it... A motor oil test comparison showed that the Valvoline SynPower was up there with Mobil 1 and in some cases better then Castrol...

http://www.synthetic-oil-online.com/10W30API.htm

The site is bias "propaganda" for AMSOIL but shows a fair comparison beween the other oils...

Any one used Valvoline SynPower??

I think at the end of the day, as long as you use a decent grade/quality of synthetic oil.. with regular intervals (5000kms/3 month) oil & filter change, your car will run purrrfect...

Any oppinions would be greatly appreciated!

I would say choose a good synthetic and go 10k OCI, it's cheaper and protects better than the "avg synthetic". Cost per mileage will be cheaper.

Everyone know that Amsoil website is pure propaganda and can't be taken too seriously. Take it with a pinch of salt.

During my break at uni today I managed to take a quick trip down to Peps and Super Cheap... This is what I found (all are in 5L jugs):

Mobil 1 5W50 - $69

Mobil 1 GOLD 10W30 - $79

Royal Purple 10W40 (at Peps) - $75

Royal Purple 5W30 (at Peps) - $72

Castrol EDGE 0W40 - $70

Castrol EDGE 5W30 - $49

Valvoline SynPower 5W40 - $45

Wouldn't the choice go to Royal Purple for the high range? and the Valvoline Synpower for the low range?

What you think guys? or am i going around in circles chasing my tail? :O lol

I wouldn't mind spending $75 for the Royal Purple, but considering i change my Oil/Filter every 5000kms I think the Valvoline or Castrol for $45 - $50 would be a good choice...

Cheers,

Sarkis

Mobil 1 5W50 - $69 --- too thick

Mobil 1 GOLD 10W30 - $79 --- abit expensive but still ok

Royal Purple 10W40 (at Peps) - $75 --- ok

Royal Purple 5W30 (at Peps) - $72 --- ok (depends if you are running rich AFR)

Castrol EDGE 0W40 - $70 --- ok

Castrol EDGE 5W30 - $49 --- (could be group III, good enough for NA engine)

Valvoline SynPower 5W40 - $45 --- group III (avg oil)

For the above available choice, i suggest you go for RP 10w40 and run 10k. The HTHS for RP 10w40 is pretty strong at 4.02

hmm all this advice is getting me confused.....

What grade oil is best for a series 2 33 gtst running 192rwkw...

I was thinking of going Mobil 1 stuff...

Whats the best oil in ur opinion 'value' wise, if ur changing oil every 5k?

any help would be great thanks.

in my opinion motul Chrono 300V. it's a very high quality oil, full synthetic ester. run it for a while and should you ever have to have your rocker covers off you will be amazed at how clean your engine is. plus it gives great protection even at higher temp. I wont use anything else in the GTR anymore. for me i think it's worth every cent for the knowledge of having a high quality oil in your engine.

franky, are you running the 300V or the 4100? your post wasn't clear. cause they are VERY different oils.

Motul Chrono 300V how much does this set you back? are you changing your oil every 5k? and what weighting do you reccomend for my application?

Thanks for the help.

im using 4100 atm, but want a change sometime.

due to the car running rich, the oil has been changed quite often....used 300V Chrono last time, for some reason i wasnt very impressed. i was told by a mechanic that fully synthetic oil actually drains from the head, and thats why nissan recommanded blended oil factory.

i am very confused. once the tuning is done, im gonna reset the valve clearance, and then use 300V 10W40 again, and see how i go.....

thanks!!

300V Chrono is 10W40. I change around 2000kms simply because car does not do that man kms but does do around 8 days of track work a year so it gets changed every second track day. it's quite expensive but in my mind the best. i get very good stable oil pressure, even when temp is up around 110 degress. monitored using a defi gauge so no dobut as to the accuracy of the pressure reading.

fanky, RBs dont have any real problem with oil draining away from the head. and if they did oil viscosity would affect it, not oil type. so that guys info is not entirely correct. give the 300V another try.

The fact is all engine oil be it synthetic or mineral (other then ester base fluid) will drain down to the sump after a period of time.

That's why Motul 300V or Redline oil cost so much as they use ester base fluid which is polar in nature and "cling" to the wall without ever draining dry.

I would go with Redline if budget permits as they use polyol ester as it's base stock (there's alot of different ester). polyol ester is the only lubricants which can withstand the tremendous heat of modern jet engines.

Starting to sound like a salesman there lol. Pity Redline still leaves alot to be desired in terms of antiwear performance from a UOA point of view!

UOA is pretty avg for normal day to day use but it is under race and track condition that RL excelled.

Can't say I've ever seen an RL UOA when used under race conditions.

Care to post a linky?

Ok, not race but hard condition, this is 2 example where i did a quick search. There's more UOA in BITOG i'm sure though.

Then again there are plenty of other UOAs where in track conditions other oils have excelled too.. and there are always excuses for RL's poor performance. "Must be doing some cleaning" or "Interacting with the bearing overlay" or something else. Yet we don't see the same arguments for other oils, especially ester based chemistries.

Ok guys, I emailed Royal Purple, regarding the grade/quality/group of their oils and they stated that they use a group V base and the rest is their Synerlec technology which has proven itself over and over again... even my mate's auto shop oil supplier who sells Motul, Red Line and RP said that RP was the best oil he has ever sold and used on his R33 GTR ~290aw/kw! Horses for courses I guess...

Today i picked up a 5L jug of Royal Purple 10W40 from Autobarn along with a Cooper oil filter... and hopfully ill get a chance this week to change the oil and will post the results...

Cheers,

Sarkis

    • I've looked up the parts number (41011AL501). It's around $700 OEM. Usually our Infiniti G35 here in Canada have interchangeable parts with my Stagea but the parts number are not the same. I have looked around and it seems the JDM 2005 V35 Skyline (which is the same as our G35) has the same caliper but I cannot confirm. And I can't find a repair kit. The inner brake pads drags on the rotor, seems to be rusty piston. Thanks for the info by the way
    • This coupled with 6-9 speed autos with ridiculously short gearing is why these modern shitbox cars always seem so fast off the line. If it wasn't for those things, Raptors would not seem fast. The problem we have is there is a driveability gap between a more gentle take off and a wheelspinning sideways launch. The difference between ankle flex required to achieve one and ankle flex required to achieve the other is about 0.5°.
    • Yeah I think I'm also with the opposite here. It's 'hard to keep up with traffic' because in the real world I'm accelerating with 15% throttle and they are pinning it. It feels like I'm being an overt dickhead at anything above 15% throttle, so the car sounds like I'm being an overt dickhead to keep up with/get ahead of traffic when I'm really just trying to drive with traffic. There would be no issue 'keeping up with traffic' if we used the same level of throttle input/aggression to drive around. People really do just drive around with their foot nearly pinned in econoboxes.
    • To be fair it's the other way around. 300kw is boring in a modern Golf or BMW. They are so competent / well-engineered / devoid of emotion that you have to go stupid fast to feel anything. Whereas the <300kw RB still makes all the right noises and it feels good to drive. Can pull off at the lights with the turbo whooshing and the blow-off pssshing and feel like the coolest kid on the block. Just don't look to the side where you'll see the bored housewifes in their shitbox Yaris/Corolla/Camry that kept up because you didn't go fast at all
    • 300kW is so boring in a Skyline, you'll get spanked by someone's mum's Golf with Alibaba pipes, and an email tune.
