I was originally gonna try doing exactly that with one of those nulon "lifter free" engine flushes but then I read some guy on SAU or maybe elsewhere did the same thing to try and free up the lifters and apparently it did such a terrific job of cleaning out all the crud his rattling amplified ... lawl. Imagine that shit. And there's no going back from that ..not like you can poor sludge back in to quiet it down :D So yeah I'm guessing he had to take the lifters out and clean/repair them

Birds how does rocker cover oil flow affect lifters ? Any chance you can elaborate on that ? I do have the tiniest little leak near the half moons / firewall that I've been meaning to fix for a while. Even bought the rocker cover gaskets from nissan like a year ago just never got around to it heh

sougi helped with my lifter noise - r34 spec rb25 (neo)

nulon was good at first then got noisy when cold

i still get a bit of top end noise when cold but it goes away after 20 secs max

which sougi and what viscosity? And what do you mean by top end noise when cold ?

sougi only comes in 10w40

i'll take a video sometime when i do a cold start next

its not tappet noise cos neo heads have solid lifters but its a similar noise. bit of a whirr and a soft rattle

i think i just need to re-do the tolerances (100k km service is coming up)

Just came across this interesting video comparison clip of four well know oil brands seeing which produces most performance. Test conducted a on Mitsubishi Evo 6 via dyno shoot out. Engine Oils were Royal purple, Nulon, Castrol edge & Motul 300V, mobil 1 (all 5w -30) . Link below, im not sure if anyone has posted this before, but i thought it might help those who are researching about oils for your car. =)

Those who are too lazy, Average Kws results were as below: NB (No boost increase during tests to keep fair of course)

1. Nulon: 178.00kws @All four wheels

2. Royal Purple: 173.50kws @All four wheels

3. Castrol Edge: 173.00kws @All four wheels

4. Motul 300V: 172.05kws @All four wheels

5 Mobil 1: 167.05kws @All four wheels

Dyno test should be taken with a big grain of salt...when you're talking a few kw difference that can be the difference between two runs with the same oil...but it's not like you buy an oil to increase power anyway. The thinnest oil will generally produce more power because of less inertia on engine internals.

Cause the sound resonates through the camshaft lobe followers, which also need lubrication in their bores...they're like miniature cylinders. Oil also acts as a sound blanket withn the rocker covers. Give Sougi a go, it only comes in 10w40...may not do anything for your lifters but mine are quiet enough and it is a very, very good oil.

That is very interesting! But unfortunately it can't simulate the effect of the oils on the engine over a few thousand km, such as carbon deposition/removal and other longer term effects of an oil on an engine.

Look at the dyno fan positioning between oils, Nulon is practically on the bumper, whereas the others you could park a motorcycle in there.

Yep too many variables in that for it to be considered as even slightly meaningful. They should have done 5 dynos back to back for each oil to account for any spread, they should have waited for each car to cool down AND they should have used a control car with no oil changes.

I bet there was less than 2kw difference between them all and a dyno is not accurate enough to measure a difference like that.

I've seen that YouTube video and the biggest complaint I've read is about the fan positioning. It seems they did try to do a proper comparison, but there are too many things they did wrong for it to be useful.

Add to that Nulon advertising their oil as 100% synthetic when it's only a semi. If they are not even honest with regards to this, then the performance gains to me are meaningless as I have little confidence in a company that attempts to mislead.

Bottom line is that any dyno competition, no matter how double blind / strict / fair, is useless for comparing oils...the power differences are a couple of kilowatts. Too many variables at stake to put power differences like that down to a different oil. We aren't talking 2000 watt motors here. I've done 3 consecutive runs (2 minutes apart) before, results varied between 162rwkw and 166rwkw...

The competition although fun, is just part of an oil company marketing their oil as a performance product rather than a support product, targeting the sector of auto aftermarket obsessed with extracting every single kw out of their engine.

I've put in royal purple 15W40 and have noticed no change in terms of "lifter noise" on cold startup. Still the same and still goes away after about 1 minute. I'm starting to think it's NOT lifter noise at all .. quite possibly leaky exhaust manifold gasket or snapped mainfold studs. Then as soon as some heat gets there, the small gap closes and the noise stops ...

For the life of me I can't see the exhaust mainfol at all looking through the engine bay .. do I have to remove the undertray and look from below to check the manifold gasket/studs??

Ps. www.performanceclub.com for all your top of the line oils - best prices anywhere and you can get viscosities that normal OZ distributor doesn't even carry (like the RP 15W40)

If its really 15 seconds im sure it would be lifter noise and not leaky gasket noise. I have heard that same lifter noise on a plenty of cars over time.

now I'm 99.99999% sure it's neither lifters NOR exhaust manifold/gasket/bolts .... but rather the timing belt idler bearing.

I got one of those things you stick in your ears connected to a long metal rod (like doctors use when listening to you breathe) and the noise is most loud at the top right of the engine just behind the timing belt cover.

Then i found a couple of vids on youtube from other SAU members who had that exact same noise in the exact same area and when they replaced the idler/tensioner bearings it went away!

Can't frigging wait to get this done now... parts alone cost $600 (nissan timing belt/water pump, idler and tensioner and bearings and studs ... rocker cover gaskets.) How much do you reckon I should pay for labour for all of the above?

    • Also, I logged some data from the ECU for each session (mostly oil pressures and various temps, but also speed, revs etc, can't believe I forgot accelerator position). As the test sessions are mostly about the car, not me, I basically start by checking the oil pressure (good, or at least consistent all day). These have an electrically controlled oil pump which targets 25psi(!) at low load and 50 at high. I'm running a much thicker oil than recommended by nissan (they said 0w20, I'm running 10w40) so its a little higher. The main thing is that it doesn't drop too far, eg in the long left hand fish hook, or under brakes so I know I'm not getting oil surge. Good start. Then Oil and Coolant temp, plus intercooler and intake temps, like this: Keeping in mind ambient was about 5o at session 2, I'd say the oil temp is good. The coolant temp as OK but a big worry for hot days (it was getting to 110 back in Feb when it was 35o) so I need to keep addressing that. The water to air intercooler is working totally backwards where we get 5o air in the intake, squish/warm it in the turbos (unknown temp) then run it through the intercoolers which are say 65o max in this case, then the result is 20o air into the engine......the day was too atypical to draw a conclusion on that I think, in the united states of freedom they do a lot of upsizing the intercooler and heat exchanger cores to get those temps down but they were OK this time. The other interesting (but not concerning) part for me was the turbo speed vs boost graph: I circled an example from the main straight. With the tune boost peaks at around 18psi but it deliberately drops to about 14psi at redline because the turbos are tiny - they choke at high revs and just create more heat than power if you run them hard all the way. But you can also see the turbo speed at the same time; it raises from about 180,000rpm to 210,000rpm which the boost falls....imagine the turbine speed if they held 18psi to redline. The wastegates are electrically controlled so there is a heap of logic about boost target, actual boost, delta etc etc but it all seems to work well

Yes some vid from the day is up, here:  Note that as with all track day videos it is boring watching after the bloopers at the start.  The off was a genuine surprise to me, I've literally done a thousand laps around the place and I've never had instability there; basically it rolled into oversteer, slipped, gripped and spat me out. On the way off I mowed down one of the instructor's cones and it sat there all day looking at me with accusing cone eyes as I drove past. 1:13:20 was my fastest lap, and it was in the second session, 3rd lap.  It (or me!) got slower throughout the day as it got hotter.

    • Discovered today that if I select reverse first and take my foot off the brake, then select drive, the drive indicator light works and so does the tiptronic gear indicator. 
    • Ok so after much research and talking with knowledgeable people I've got my turbo conversion done and it's all running great other than 1 small issue.  Car has remained auto with the na auto and tcm, I've used a stagea ecu with. NIstune board and everything is great other than my gear selection on the dash. It illuminates park, reverse, neutral, 3rd and 2nd. But nothing drive or what gear your in when you pop it into tiptronic.  I'm sure there is maybe 1 wire in the ecu plug I need to move to rectify this. Does anyone here have any ideas?   Cheers guys
