Just a thought.

A sticky thread in this forum section with a high level summary on fluid info for each skyline model would be helpful. (With recommended types and capacity for each car - engine oil, gearbox oil, diff oil, fuel filter part #, oil filter part # - etc).

If there already is a compiled thread like this - please point me in the right direction.

Still a bit torn between 10w40 and 10w50?

And will a 5L bottle be enough for my requirements (have been doing some searching and seen the RB26 is approx 4.5 litres with filter).

But hard to get a straight answer through research on the internet (Some people have oil coolers or add extra for track days?).

either way will work for your car.

RB26 sump is 5.5 lt (i have one in my gtst and I use 6lt)

Stock sump GTR, just fill to the middle of the hump. From memory its about 6-6.5 litres. Have done in my GTR for the past 5 years.

Due for an oil change and was ready to buy some royal purple 10w40 for my 34 GTR (completely stock with 83k on the clock).

After reading through some of this thread, not quite sure if the viscosity i've chosen is the best choice?

Huh? Most of the thread has a consensus towards 10w40 and you're feeling unsure about your choice of 10w40 :wacko:

The problem with formalising it like that, is that no one can agree on the best brands/types/capacities.

This is where I say for the 11tyth time, you cannot kill your engine by choosing the wrong viscosity. There are no wrong viscosities, or right viscosities. Only more suitable and better feeling. Try a couple of different grades and see which you prefer the feel of (cold starts and hot running). I try a different brand and a different viscosity nearly everytime I do an oil change (5,000km) and my engine is running as strong as ever (very healthy RB25).

On another note, have been running Syn-X-6000 (Sougi 6000's replacement) in my RB25 for the last 300km. It's a synthetic 5w40 and so far I'm very happy with it. Feels just like Sougi, but a little smoother when cold, which I'll attribute to the 5w. Now for the test of time :)

I ended up trying the Castrol Edge 5w-40 and have to say im quite impressed. Motor does sound quieter than the Royal Purple 10W-40 i was using at cold start. I have a batch of Motul 5W-40 for the next change to see if the different viscosity was the contributing factor to running smoother when cold. On a side note most of our mornings here are under 10°Cn and getting colder.

I'm warming to the idea of trying some Syn X too. I don't think a 5w40 vs 10w40 is going to be that different at the end of the day.

Could someone give me an idea what to use in a RB25DE?

Going to run Redline Lightweight Shockproof in the gearbox, any idea what to put in the diff.. Standard HCR32 so i believe it has the viscous LSD? (yes rb20det was swapped for rb25de)

Preferably Motul as that is what i have the easiest availability too.

yeah i read alot about sludge but from spending all day at work reading up on it it's like one person has said it and the rest have followed ..?

who has actually used it and had any problems? what is in magnatec that isn't in other semi synth oils that can be pinpoint to creating sludge,, i just dont follow..!

in saying that after reading up im more inclined to not swap the 10w60 castrol edge sport in both my rb25 and rb26 to the magnatec i just figured visco is about right and at $25 a bottle (normally $40 i must say) it seems an option

i have been using magnatec in:

2007 corolla from 30k to 100k! changed every 10, comes out relative clean for car of its age, no sludge.

1997 prelude for 25k - the engine has chronic piston slap but hasn't got any worse since using this oil - no sludge

1992 bmw e30 - maybe done 1000kms since we bought the car but can't see any problems yet..

i'm about to put it in old mans hiace with 220kms on the clock.. he's also thinking of switching from penrite and buying a dozen bottles of magnatec!

if its truly rubbish then yeah ill give it a miss but seems its all heresay

    • Have you done the Ignition Sync Wizard in the AEM software?
    • Find out what RPM it was idling at with the IACV unplugged. It's very weird that the rpm didn't change at all, and then it stalled. When it stalls is it nearly like a switch off, like you've turned the engine off? Or is it more stutters and sputters and coughs to death over a few seconds? Or does the RPM just slowly keep going down and down? Have you done a test of trying to start it with the AFM unplugged? Does it still die?     If you Follow Josh's advice on using Nistune to check the voltages (which is a perfect method!) if you see anything out of wack voltage wise, THEN get the multimeter out and read the voltage directly at the sensor. If the two vary, then you're now looking for a wiring issue vs a sensor issue. So be aware, what the ECU sees, may not be what the sensor is actually saying too...
    • You very likely need to get it on a dyno and tune it. My assumption is, you've got an RB25DET tune in it, which has a different manifold, different injectors, and different cams as a minimum. What O2 sensor are you running?   When you say it runs extremely rich from idle all the way to redline, is this just free revving it you see that?
    • I seem to the be only person that is using a Haltech 2500 on an NA motor, I've installed a Bosch DBW throttle body to the OEM intake manifold and am having problems maintaining AFR even with the wideband o2.  It will run extremely rich at idle and up to redline, but under load it will go extremely lean in the 20s and i'm essentially having to rev it over 4k and feather the clutch to get it up to speed.  I've read a few other threads of about the butterfly, it seems removing the vacuum to it is supposed to have it remain open, i've noticed no difference under 4k with the vacuum line to it plugged.  I'm hoping someone here has had luck using the NA manifold with Haltech, and if they happen to have a tune for it.  
    • I don't know any details, but I really wouldn't be surprised if they do it as a LHD only version, at least initially.
