Nice to know brad. Wasn't planning on changing the intake, don't see how they can complain about that

They wont give you one unless you lie and say you are moving house or need mechanical repairs etc.

yeah they said it was only for going to and from workshops to get the repairs done. i wouldnt want to risk driving it to glenelg on the weekend like that lol

might be needing that^

anyways..

got a couple questions for the knowledgeable

got a 180sx thats on defect and im thinking of taking it through my favourite place in adelaide

thing is , it has r33 brakes all round and no handbrake what so ever.

previous owner didn't do the conversion 100%... nor is it 5 stud.

can I get a hydraulic handbrake engineered without the need for a factory handbrake or how would I go about fitting a cable handbrake to make it legal in regency's eyes?

Hi new to the site. I'm currently in the process of fitting a 25 into my 32. To make it street legal I've been sent a list of things to make the car comply to aust rules and regs. I have a 3" hi flowed exhaust the whole way through. I'm wondering if this is going to cause my car to b too loud and also if this will effect the emissions?

Any help would b appreciated thanks

give dark.sky a PM - he did the exact same conversion and could probably tell ya everything there is to know

I also did the 25 swap, I had to put 33 brakes on, stock ecu and stock injection system. Had a FMIC and 3" exhaust that was borderline legal but they didn't test it, same with the suspension, had sagged below legal but it was stock so they didn't measure it either. The process is pretty easy to pass providing the car looks and is pretty much stock, I managed to get through with a GCG highflow as it looked stock lol.

Get the emissions test done by a workshop, most of them will just make the numbers up for you and stamp it providing the car is stock, PM me if you want to know who I got to do my idle emissions test, the laws were fairly lax back then so if you have a brand new cat you should pass the idle test pretty easily anyway, as long as you get the exhaust fairly hot first.

Bit of a cockup by rego department and boys in blue.

Bit of a long story.

Bought an r34 gtt from NSW drove it here transfered it got the S style plate (old reissue one R and S aplha numeric) drove around for 2 weeks.

Easter monday missus and I decided for a drive through Glenelg than heading north along the beaches.

near West Beach caravan park tucked behind the fence was a police car checking the speed.

I was travelling approx 40kmh cruising and checking the scenery.

Went past no issues, police officer glanced as i went passed but nothing unusual. every now and then I check in the mirror to see if the police car had moved. nope was still there.

3 round abouts later out of nowhere I have a police car up my rear end with lights flashing................ here we go .

by the way the car just went through regency inspection for ID as it is and no issues. nothing to defect, as mostly stock or nismo factory option items. only aftermarket item 19" wheels.

Wasn't speeding, wasn't doing anything wrong so my assumption was: targeted due to the car and wanting to defect it.

as I parked in the carpark the police car boxed me in (so i don't bolt  )

got out of the car and walked towards the police car to see what is the problem.

The younger police officer quite rude yells at me:

Why em i driving a defected car and demanding my drivers licence.

Quite shocked by the response I handed over the licence and replied:" sorry no its not defected" and tried explaining the story how i know the car is not defected.

It was on deaf ears and I have been ordered to get back in my car till he does some checks. 15min later he comes out asking for paperwork and still sticking to his story about my car being defected and why i'm driving it and why did I remove the sticker.

All new to me.

I found the paperwork in the car with inspection pass, rego papers and original NSW rego paper and handed over saying to him check the car is not defected and I'm not accepting his accusations.

he took the papers and again I was ordered to sit in my car for another 15min.

He approached me and started saying why did I paint my car from black to white, why I'm driving it as its still defected etc......

At this point I was very frustrated.

I replied to him car was never black always white from factory, never had flares never had any other mods that he mentioned. kept telling him this is not the car he thinks it is.

than I was told off for trying to clear up things and not to argue with him.

So i responded OK I wont interrupt till he finishes the story of what he thinks has happend to this car.

story goes.

I had the car defected, took it to NSW got it off defect there as its easier, drove it back here got it through id and got new plates. and then bought it of female owner on paperwork pointing to the paperwork i gave him.

at the same time resprayed the car in white and to him car is defected and needs to go through inspection and i should be fined for driving it.

At this point I busted laughing. saying to him that he has no clue what so ever.

The female owner that I allegedly bought the car from is my wife, sitting in the car at the time. pointed out the car rego and my drivers is under same address.

pointed out that our car again was never black and he can feel free to go over it.

told most probably the issue is are the number plates. possibly they were on a black skyline that was defected and never cleared but rego lapsed. I bought the damn plates and in police system showing defected. told him to check the Vin and engine number that they will be different against the defected car

His reponse to that the vin numbers match this paperwork therefore it is this car. I replied that i know they match cause they are for this car with these plates i was refering to other car. but again didn't listen.

he couldn't figure it out he got realy pissed off but eventualy let me go after almost 45min.

He did warn me that he will check in the office and will be knocking on my door.

no defect. no rbt nothing just 45min lost arguing and still no door knock.

Next day rang the rego dept and story gets better.

not that my car is defected now its also stolen. :verymad:

seriously what tha F#@.

anyway the rego department had figured the issue out.

we have alpha numeric plates.

the famous defected black skyline had custom plates with same slogan as mine. :woot: how tha hell does that happen.

not only was defected but stolen. (by the way the police officer never mentioned stolen)

basically it was my fault for buying the plates online (regardless that I went to rego department to pick them up and assign them to the car) apperently if i ordered them over the counter they would have warned me about it or refused the slogan.

argued the point not my fault that they shouldnt be selling stuff thats not cleared or exactly same as their other plates.

so either I change the plates which im refusing as I want my money back and new plates reissued for free.

or I have to go to the police tell them the problem again, try to clear up the custom slogan plates so rego department can cancel them and restrict them from being used.

or put up with possible constant pulling over and explaining the issue over and over to the boys in blue.

what a freaking joke. they quick to get he money but wont fix the problems or even clear their stuff properly.

still to go to the police station to try clear it up maybe tonights job.

so yeah i wonder how many more plates are out like that. wonder how mamy WRX ### aplha numeric plates match WRX ### custom plates.

visual difference old R & S plates have either just "SA" (which is what we got) or newer style "SA the Festival state" with SA logo while custom have different colours with "South Australia" and SA logo. so not much difference.

moral of the story.

try find out history of the custom plates before purchasing. if you want them tell them to clear it all up before hand.

or

just get normal current issue $21 plates and no problems.

Ok this may have been brought up before. If so I apologise. Just wondering if anyone knows what the go is about the following. I bought a car year ago to use as a track car as it is defected. At time

Of defect it had expired Vic reg and was being driven on Sa permit. And got defected in Sa... Do defects carry over from state to state? And was the cop who defected it well within his right to seen as it was on permit? (note that the car had straight pipes, on it's ass and in general was just asking for a defect).

vic defects mean nothing here no but if youre driving it around on a permit here and you get defected then thats just like anyone else driving an sa reg'd car and getting defected. a permit doesnt make the car immune to defects

    • I came here to note that is a zener diode too base on the info there. Based on that, I'd also be suspicious that replacing it, and it's likely to do the same. A lot of use cases will see it used as either voltage protection, or to create a cheap but relatively stable fixed voltage supply. That would mean it has seen more voltage than it should, and has gone into voltage melt down. If there is something else in the circuit dumping out higher than it should voltages, that needs to be found too. It's quite likely they're trying to use the Zener to limit the voltage that is hitting through to the transistor beside it, so what ever goes to the zener is likely a signal, and they're using the transistor in that circuit to amplify it. Especially as it seems they've also got a capacitor across the zener. Looks like there is meant to be something "noisy" to that zener, and what ever it was, had a melt down. Looking at that picture, it also looks like there's some solder joints that really need redoing, and it might be worth having the whole board properly inspected.  Unfortunately, without being able to stick a multimeter on it, and start tracing it all out, I'm pretty much at a loss now to help. I don't even believe I have a climate control board from an R33 around here to pull apart and see if any of the circuit appears similar to give some ideas.
    • Nah - but you won't find anything on dismantling the seats in any such thing anyway.
    • Could be. Could also be that they sit around broken more. To be fair, you almost never see one driving around. I see more R chassis GTRs than the Renault ones.
    • Yeah. Nah. This is why I said My bold for my double emphasis. We're not talking about cars tuned to the edge of det here. We're talking about normal cars. Flame propagation speed and the amount of energy required to ignite the fuel are not significant factors when running at 1500-4000 rpm, and medium to light loads, like nearly every car on the road (except twin cab utes which are driven at 6k and 100% load all the time). There is no shortage of ignition energy available in any petrol engine. If there was, we'd all be in deep shit. The calorific value, on a volume basis, is significantly different, between 98 and 91, and that turns up immediately in consumption numbers. You can see the signal easily if you control for the other variables well enough, and/or collect enough stats. As to not seeing any benefit - we had a couple of EF and EL Falcons in the company fleet back in the late 90s and early 2000s. The EEC IV ECU in those things was particularly good at adding in timing as soon as knock headroom improved, which typically came from putting in some 95 or 98. The responsiveness and power improved noticeably, and the fuel consumption dropped considerably, just from going to 95. Less delta from there to 98 - almost not noticeable, compared to the big differences seen between 91 and 95. Way back in the day, when supermarkets first started selling fuel from their own stations, I did thousands of km in FNQ in a small Toyota. I can't remember if it was a Starlet or an early Yaris. Anyway - the supermarket servos were bringing in cheap fuel from Indonesia, and the other servos were still using locally refined gear. The fuel consumption was typically at least 5%, often as much as 8% worse on the Indo shit, presumably because they had a lot more oxygenated component in the brew, and were probably barely meeting the octane spec. Around the same time or maybe a bit later (like 25 years ago), I could tell the difference between Shell 98 and BP 98, and typically preferred to only use Shell then because the Skyline ran so much better on it. Years later I found the realtionship between them had swapped, as a consequence of yet more refinery closures. So I've only used BP 98 since. Although, I must say that I could not fault the odd tank of United 98 that I've run. It's probably the same stuff. It is also very important to remember that these findings are often dependent on region. With most of the refineries in Oz now dead, there's less variability in local stuff, and he majority of our fuels are not even refined here any more anyway. It probably depends more on which SE Asian refinery is currently cheapest to operate.
    • You don't have an R34 service manual for the body do you? Have found plenty for the engine and drivetrain but nothing else
